At Scarborough, July 15. England won by 19 runs. England looked to be running up a massive total after being put in to bat on a very reasonable pitch, but at 178 for one Cairns tore the middle out of the innings by taking four wickets for 5 runs in nine deliveries. While Howarth and Congdon were together an upset seemed possible, but with their concentration broken by a break for bad light, they were soon parted after an hour's delay. Though Congdon found another good ally in Cairns for the best stand of the innings, the turning point had been reached when Taylor caught Howarth.

Cairns began his early destruction by dismissing Gooch as the Essex man was looking for his century. A catch by Parker cut him down 6 runs short after batting for two and a half hours, his innings including two 6s off Boock and nine 4s. Cairns and Parker combined again to account for Radley, the partner of Gooch in a stand of 111, and then Gower and Botham both went at 185, the former to a brilliant catch by Burgess at point.

These two made up for their lack of success with the bat by good work in the field. Botham ran out Wright with a superb stop at extra-cover and Gower held a fine catch at short mid-wicket to dismiss the hard-hitting Edwards. Gooch took the Man of the Match award for his 94 runs and a good spell at medium pace which brought two for 29 in ten overs.
