At Birmingham, June 9. West Indies won by nine wickets. This was an easy victory for the Prudential World Cup holders. Everything went right for them from the moment Clive Lloyd won an important toss which gave his battery of fast bowlers the benefit of any early morning moisture in the perfect Edgbaston pitch. A cluster of close-to-the-bat fielders helped capture the first five Indian wickets for 77 and only Viswanath dealt effectively with the hostile bowling, much of which was short-pitched.

The Indian tail fought bravely, notably the last pair, Venkataraghavan and Bedi, but the task of making 191 to win was obviously within West Indies' compass. Greenidge took command from the start, despite the steady attack of Kapil Dev and Ghavri, and Haynes, his young partner, soon grew in confidence. The opening stand yielded 138 before the talented Viv Richards arrived to finish the onslaught with Greenidge, who fully deserved the Man of the Match award.
