NEW ZEALAND v SRI LANKA

At Nottingham, June 9

15-Apr-1980
At Nottingham, June 9. New Zealand won by nine wickets with twelve overs to spare. Though they lost heavily, Sri Lanka put up a brave exhibition with the bat after Burgess, winning the toss, sent them in. The captain, Tennekoon, played well for his fifty, whereas most of his colleagues, particularly adept with the drive, believed the bowling was there to be punished. Half of them wore protective headgear and were difficult to identify, even to the scorers. It was their bowling that really let down Sri Lanka. Mainly medium-paced, and with no one apparently having ability to spin, they offered no problems to the talented New Zealand batsmen. Wright saw the opening stand to 64 before he mistimed and was caught by mid-on. Thereafter Turner and Howarth drove and pulled freely. Howarth, the Man of the Match, struck D. S. de Silva for 6, and even a pulled hamstring, which forced him to bat with a runner, did not hamper him.
