India won thanks to Sidhu, whose six off Cummins lifted their run-rate above the West Indians' just before the gathering clouds burst; their requirement at 33 overs was calculated as 127. Had the match been played out, India would have been penalised two overs for failing to complete their 50 on time.

They had put West Indies in and had them tottering at 51 for five, Srinath and Prasad exploiting a seamer's pitch. Hooper came to the rescue with a classy 70 off 86 balls, despite a controversial end to a fine stand of 60 in 12 overs with Chanderpaul, who was given run out by the third umpire, although everyone else interpreted the TV replay differently. Later, India lost both openers for two runs - Tendulkar made his second successive duck. But Sidhu, supported by Azharuddin, kept them in the chase; he hit two sixes and four fours in his unbeaten 65.
