India v West Indies

At Bombay, November 28, 29, 30, December 2, 3

15-Apr-1960
At Bombay, November 28, 29, 30, December 2, 3. Drawn. After struggling for most of the time, India comfortably saved the game. West Indies batted disappointingly on an easy pitch after winning the toss, only sound displays by Kanhai and Smith bringing the total to respectability. Gupte with well-flighted leg-breaks caused considerable trouble.
Gilchrist and Hall proved even more troublesome to India and they would have collapsed completely but for a fifth-wicket stand of 80 between Umrigar and Ramchand.
West Indies batted much more confidently when consolidating their lead of 75, and although Gupte took his hundredth wicket in Test cricket he bothered the batsmen much less. Sobers and Butcher, who each needed a runner because of leg injuries, made 134 in an unfinished stand before Alexander declared.
India needed 399 to win with nine and a half hours at their disposal, but they played defensively, finishing 109 behind with five wickets in hand. Roy acted as the mainstay of this negative policy and spent seven hours twenty-four minutes for 90. Ramchand and Hardikar, still together at the end, added 85.
