India v Australia

At Calcutta, January 23, 24, 25, 27, 28

15-Apr-1961
At Calcutta, January 23, 24, 25, 27, 28. Drawn. India needed to win to share the rubber and their hopes shattered on the first day when they lost half their side for 112. Careful batting by Gopinath and Jaisimha improved the situation, but early on the second morning Davidson virtually finished the innings by removing Ramchand and Desai.
Australia, in little difficulty against the Indian bowlers, gained a first-innings lead just after tea for the loss of three wickets. The highest of the day was an unfinished fourth-wicket partnership of 113 between O'Neill and Burge.
O'Neill took his score to 113, which included fifteen 4's, before Desai had him caught at the wicket, but the later batsmen put up little resistance and the last four wickets fell for 18 runs.
India needing 137 to avoid an innings defeat, began their second innings badly, losing Kunderam for a duck. The position deteriorated to 123 for five before a stand of 83 between Jaisimha and Borde effected a partial recovery. Both scored well, Borde being especially severe on Benaud with powerful cuts and drives.
Kenny, who also hit well, continued the fight to save the game on the final day and in the end Australia, left to score 203 to win, were content to make 121 for the loss of Harvey and McDonald.
