Australia secured the trophy with their tenth straight limited-overs win. Mark Waugh's 173, his 17th hundred and the ninth-highest innings in one-day internationals, was a record for Australia, beating Gilchrist's 154 against Sri Lanka in 1998-99; he also became the first Australian to reach 8,000 runs at this level. Waugh shared century partnerships with Ponting and Bevan, and struck 16 fours and three sixes in 148 balls before he was eventually caught off Samuels in the 49th over. Australia's 338 for six was their second-highest total and the highest in any one-day international on Australian soil, beating their 337 for seven in the previous year's final against Pakistan. For once, the West Indians were not overwhelmed and responded with 299, easily their best of the series. Though Lara made a duck in Warne's opening over, there were fifties for Hinds, Samuels and Jacobs. To no one's surprise, Waugh won the match award, but there were boos from the crowd when the series award went to Lara. He shared their astonishment: "I agree," he said, "one of the Australians should have got this." It was just about all they failed to get throughout the summer.
