England's batsmen failed to cope with the strategy that Bob Woolmer, South Africa's former coach, used to call "aggressive containment". After choosing to bat, they found runs elusive, collecting just five from their first eight overs. Telemachus, Pollock's new-ball partner, registered 92.2mph on the speed-gun. Starved of scoring opportunities, five of England's top six perished to catches around the on-side boundary, and the only noteworthy stand, 65 between Hick and Flintoff, was achieved while the four main seamers were resting. South Africa's pursuit of 183, the lowest target of the tournament, was hardly ruffled by Gough's early dismissal of Hall. Kallis (two sixes, nine fours) and Dippenaar put on an unbroken 132 to carry them through.
