Robert Key sent a reminder to the England selectors with 112 on the opening day at Tunbridge Wells. However, in an unusual Kent innings only two other batsmen - David Fulton and Andrew Hall - reached double figures. Fulton and Key added 112 for the first-wicket before Martin Bicknell claimed four quick wickets as Kent slumped to 129 for 5. Key and Hall then added 100 before the second collapse set-in, Kent losing their last five wickets for 33 runs. Nayan Doshi and James Benning claimed three wickets apiece, while Martin van Jaarsveld picked up his third Championship duck in three innings - dismissed first-ball by Bicknell - and has now faced 14 balls in his last three knocks. Bicknell was a model of economy, only conceding 31 runs from his 24 overs. Hall struck nine boundaries in his 61 before he was last man out and the Surrey openers safety negotiated five overs to complete a satisfying day for the visitors.

Nottinghamshire's batsmen plundered the Gloucestershire attack at Bristol as all the top-order contributed. While they will be disappointed that no one managed to convert into three figures a total over 400, on the opening day, is a solid base to work from. Stephen Fleming came closest to a hundred, his 92 from 98 balls was studded with 16 fours and a six. He added 137 with Anurag Singh, who was the most circumspect batsmen of the day, taking 153 balls over his 57. The innings was given a positive start, through a boundary-filled 48 by Darren Bicknell, and David Hussey's unbeaten 65 ensured Notts can aim to build towards 450 on the second day. Gloucestershire missed the services of Jon Lewis, and without his steady influence the attack struggled for any consistency. However, Mark Hardinges plugged away through 22 overs and was rewarded with 4 for 95, including Fleming's wicket.

He broke a threatening stand of 84 between Ed Joyce and Scott Styris, having Styris caught by Murray Goodwin, and then trapped Jamie Dalrymple lbw first-ball. Two more wickets followed, including Paul Weekes for a valuable 55. Joyce's innings maintained his run-scoring spree and he has now amassed 687 runs in eight innings. He qualifies for England on July 1 and is certainly making himself known to the selectors. Owais Shah chipped in with 58, but Sussex's fightback left proceedings finely balanced.

When Warwickshire played Lancashire at this ground last season the first innings totals were 499 and and 508 - Hampshire did not make it halfway to either of those. After an opening stand of 48 Warwickshire's collection of medium-pacers ran through the batting, led by Dougie Brown who took 4 for 59. Kevin Pietersen offered some resistance with 42 but became Brown's fourth wicket. Shane Warne fell for a duck and could not conjure up any magic with the ball, as Nick Knight and Ian Westwood put on 135 for the first wicket. Shaun Udal broke the stand as Knight was caught by Chris Benham but Westwood, in just his fourth first-class match, ended the day unbeaten on 67.
