The South Africans put up an emphatic performance with both bat and ball, crushing Lions by a massive 223 runs in a warm-up one-day match at Johannesburg. Jacques Kallis, the South Africans' captain, led the way with the bat, scoring 82 off just 95 balls as the South Africans mustered 289. Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall then took over with the ball, taking seven wickets between them as the Lions were bundled out for an embarrassing 66.

Choosing to bat after winning the toss, the South Africans started badly, losing Boeta Dippenaar for 5 and AB de Villiers for 1. However, Loots Bosman joined Kallis and steadied the innings, adding 100 for the third wicket. Both batsmen matched each other before Bosman chased a wide one to be caught behind for 48.

Mark Boucher could not reproduce his form from two nights back, and was caught playing too early at a slower ball. Kallis and Justin Kemp then put on 80 before Kallis held out to the offspin of Werner Coetsee for a typical innings of 82 which included some sparkling cover-drives - in all he hit eight fours and three sixes. Kemp showed early season form as he hit two big sixes in his 49 while Pollock timed the ball superbly in his 16-ball 20.

Hall and Andre Nel saw South Africa through to 289 for 8 on a pitch which was good for batting, though at times the ball kept low and lacked pace.

The task of scoring 290 against a full-strength South African bowling attack was always going to be difficult for the Lions, and with Pollock hitting the right lengths and taking the ball away from the right-handers the task became even more difficult. Pollock ripped through the top order taking the first four wickets to leave the Lions floundering at 21 for 4 after nine overs. Hall then struck twice as the Lions collapsed to 60 for 6 after only 16 overs.

Andre Nel, after an indifferent start, then joined the party with two wickets and a run out leaving it for Hall to take the final wicket, with Matthew Harris the only Lions batsman to get into double-figures.

The match was part of a two-game warm-up series for the South African national team before they travel to India for the Champions Trophy. Their second match is against the Titans on Sunday at Centurion.
