This match followed a similar course to the previous one: South Africa struggled at the start, losing Smith (to Zaheer Khan for the third match running, for the grand total of one run) and Bosman for ducks, then recovered to a reasonable total, thanks mainly this time to a long vigil by Gibbs. Out of sorts, but grimly determined, he entered in the fourth over and batted through the innings. Pollock added some late thrust, and 243 proved well beyond India as they again struggled against the moving ball. With Dravid absent (damaged finger) and Sehwag woefully out of form, India were looking for a big innings from Tendulkar - but he fell to Pollock for a single, and India's hopes went with him. The usual crop of edges were safely gathered in the slip cordon, but Dhoni and Karthik were both caught at third man, suggesting it was bounce as much as seam movement that the Indians could not handle. Only a defiant innings from Pathan kept the margin down.
