Trinidad and Tobago clinched their second major title this year when they defeated Barbados comfortably by seven wickets in a low-scorer to lift the WICB Cup. Spin, Barbados' eternal bugbear, returned to haunt them as the Man of the Match Samuel Badree and Sherwin Ganga shared five wickets to send Barbados' crashing to 142. It was then the turn of the captain, Daren Ganga, to steer the side home with an unbeaten 48 in the day-night fixture at Providence.

Badree picked up 3 for 14 runs in ten miserly overs while Sherwin supported him well with 2 for 18 from 7.5 overs. But it was Rayad Emrit who put the shakes on the opposition after they chose to bat on another hard, docile Guyana National Stadium pitch, as he ended with 3 for 36.

Emrit had the opener Dale Richards caught behind for 8 in the second over and struck a telling blow when Ryan Hinds was caught at square leg for a duck in the fourth to leave Barbados at 10 for 2.

Kevin Stoute joined his captain Jason Haynes and they got the innings moving with a stand of 31 for the third wicket. Stoute got into stride with a couple of sweetly timed off-side strokes for boundaries off Ravi Rampaul, but he was fortunate that the stand-in wicketkeeper William Perkins dropped him on 13 off the same bowler in the tenth over.

Badree ended the stand, when he had Stoute lbw for 14 in the 14th over, bringing Dwayne Smith to the crease. A metamorphosis has come over Smith's batting throughout the competition. He has not lost any of his power, but he has become more selective with the balls that he chooses to hit.

But he lost his wicket after making 29 and Barbados went on to lose their last four wickets for as many runs. Jonathan Carter top scored with 36 before they were dismissed in the 46th over.

A clinical performance by Daren and company was in contrast to their opponents' inadequate batting and bowling efforts. Daren was steady and purposeful as he and Lendl Simmons put on an unbeaten partnership of 60 to guide T&T to their ninth regional one-day crown.

For Daren, it was expectedly a satisfying result. "I think the guys have grown accustomed to winning," Daren was quoted as saying in Caribbean Media Corporation. "We came up with a plan of what we wanted to do in the game and executed it. So I am really pleased with the guys and hopefully we can take the momentum into the four-day game this coming season."

He declared that his team's intensity in training was the key to their results this season, which includes the Stanford 20/20 title.

"The guys have trained hard and prepared very well, this is just reward for all the hard work. The guys are understanding how important it is to perform at this level. You know we have concentrated on trying to close the gap between first-class and international cricket, so we prepared and trained with intensity and the guys on our team used our experience at the international level to help the others."
