New Zealand v England 2007-08

Wisden's review of New Zealand v England, 4th ODI, 2007-08

Dean Wilson
15-Apr-2009
At Napier, February 20, 2008. Tied. Toss: New Zealand. One-day international debut: I. E. O'Brien.
A featherbed of a pitch gave spectators the thrilling game they had been waiting for. Just how close it would be came as a real surprise: England's total of 340 would normally have guaranteed victory. In these days of Twenty20 and improved bat technology - and especially on a rugby ground - nothing is guaranteed. England wicketkeeper and would-be Gilchrist imitator Mustard finally showed what he could do with the bat, scoring 83 from 74 balls. Then Collingwood, specialising in pick-ups over the short square-leg boundary, raced to 50 in 24 balls, the fastest one-day half-century for England, with six sixes. New Zealand timed their run-chase almost to perfection: after another fifty stand from Ryder and McCullum, How scored 139 from 116 balls. But they stumbled and fell at the finish. With seven needed from the last over, Collingwood turned to Wright, whose cool head and yorkers secured a tie - and England would have won if Collingwood, coming in from point, had run out Mills with the last throw of the game, instead of missing by an inch. The match aggregate of 680 was the fifth-highest in one-day internationals.
Man of the Match: J. M. How. Attendance: 9,621.
