Nottinghamshire were once again reliant on club stalwarts Paul Franks and Chris Read to dig them out of a hole on the first day of the Division One meeting with Lancashire. Despite 50s from Alex Hales and Samit Patel, the hosts collapsed to 138 for 6 after winning the toss, only for Franks and Read to put on 135 in 46 overs.

Both were dismissed in the same over by Sajid Mahmood, who finished with 5 for 112, while Kyle Hogg claimed 4 for 75. Read (58) hit five fours and a six in his 134-ball innings, while Franks made 69 from 156 balls with nine fours.

In an enthralling day's cricket, Andre Adams then blasted five sixes in a cameo of 43 from just 27 balls to swing the momentum back towards Notts who finished on 326, with Lancashire reaching seven without loss at the close.

Notts had lost their previous three Championship matches with poor first innings batting at fault, and it appeared that little had changed in the first six overs as both Neil Edwards and Riki Wessels departed for single figures. But Hales and Patel, who have both shone in the past two weeks of Friends Life t20 action, continued their good form to push the score to 100 before Hales miscued a back foot drive and was caught by Mark Chilton at short extra cover.

The flurry of wickets continued after lunch with David Hussey caught behind off a vicious rising delivery from Mahmood, Steven Mullaney edging defensively and Patel playing away from his body for another slip catch, the ball after reaching his 50.

Although Gary Keedy kept things tight with his left-arm spin, the Lancashire attack looked far less threatening when Mahmood was not bowling and Franks and Read set about recovering the situation with watchful defense and positive running. The 100 partnership came in 36 overs and it took Mahmood's return with the new ball to remove the two batsmen, Read gloving a nasty bouncer behind and Franks trapped in his crease lbw.

With Hogg claiming a return catch off Luke Fletcher, three wickets had fallen in seven balls and Notts were still 21 short of a third batting point. Adams set about reaching that target in his usual fashion, smashing Mahmood over cover for six and following up with a pull over square leg and a straight six off Hogg.

He was eventually caught at deep point leaving Lancashire to face one over each from Charlie Shreck and Fletcher, with openers Paul Horton and Stephen Moore surviving to resume on day two, 319 behind.
