With a match haul of 8 for 76 and a crucial half-century in England's first innings, Stuart Broad played a key role in his team's victory over India in the second Test in Nottingham.

After England were reduced to 124 for 8 at tea on the first day, Broad and Graeme Swann added 73 runs for the ninth wicket at 6.25 per over, which propped England up to 221. Broad led the stirring counterattack after tea; he swung hard and connected cleanly, and confronted by his aggression, India went to pieces. He reached his fifty off 56 balls and was finally dismissed for 64 off 66 balls with nine fours - caught on the deep midwicket boundary.

Having bowled a menacing spell of 7-3-5-0 before stumps on day one, Broad brought England back sensationally on the second day with a hat-trick and a spell that read 5.1-2-5-5 to keep India's lead to just 67. With Rahul Dravid, who had made a century, and Yuvraj Singh having taken India to 267 for 4 and looking to extend the lead, England needed some magic and Broad - who had earlier taken the wicket of Sachin Tendulkar - provided that. He began with Yuvraj's wicket in the sixth over with the new ball. The delivery both seamed away and kicked at him. In his next over, he drew a loose shot from MS Dhoni. Harbhajan Singh hit the leather off the next ball, but was given lbw and on the hat-trick, Broad bowled the perfect delivery to bowl Praveen Kumar. He then accounted for Dravid and Ishant Sharma to end India's innings on 288.

In India's second innings, Broad provided England with the first breakthrough by getting Dravid early and then fittingly took the final wicket of Sreesanth to seal a commanding 319-run win.
