After containing England to 211 for five from 46 overs, New Zealand had high hopes of a clean sweep. But 76 were clobbered from the last four to change the picture. Buttler obliterated the death bowling with some brutal straight hits and subtle scoops; his 16-ball innings, which included six fours and three sixes, was enough to earn the match award, and his stand with Morgan raised 62 from just 22 deliveries. Had Buttler hit Southee's final ball for six, he would have broken Sanath Jayasuriya's record for the fastest one-day international fifty - 17 balls, for Sri Lanka against Pakistan at Singapore in 1995-96. But he could manage only two. Amid the destruction, Bell's steady 82 seemed long forgotten. Tredwell led the bowling, offering limited width, but England did not feel safe until he disposed of Taylor, slog-sweeping to deep midwicket, where Finn held on, then lobbed the ball back to Bresnan as he toppled over the boundary. England did at last manage to get rid of Guptill, but not before he had scored 330 runs, breaking Brendan Taylor's record of 310 in a three match bilateral one-day series (for Zimbabwe at home to New Zealand in 2011-12). During the break between innings, spectator Chris Newell won £50,000 after completing the challenge of hitting three stumps, then two, then one, with successive balls.
