The game was overshadowed by the suspension of David Warner, who had assaulted Joe Root in a Birmingham bar in the early hours of June 9, following Australia's opening-game defeat by England. Warner took his place in the line-up for the national anthems, carried the drinks, and helped with slip-catching practice during the break between innings, but his misdemeanour cast a pall over a day that was every bit as grey as the local weather. Australia slipped to ten for two, including the senseless run-out of Hughes for a duck, but recovered through Bailey and Voges. McClenaghan again grabbed four wickets, but the pick of New Zealand's attack was Vettori, who got through his most economical ten-over analysis for more than four years. McKay then found extra bounce to remove both openers in quick succession, and Australia were in control when heavy rain arrived from the south-west around 3.30pm. Three hours later, the game was called off, five overs short of the 20 needed to constitute a match. The abandonment left Australia reliant on other results to have any chance of making the last four - and awaiting the outcome of Warner's disciplinary hearing the following day in Melbourne.
