Bangladesh v New Zealand, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the first ODI, Bangladesh v New Zealand, 2013-14

15-Apr-2014
At Mirpur, October 29, 2013 (day/night). First one-day international: Bangladesh won by 43 runs
Rubel Hossain, whose four wickets here had sealed Bangladesh's clean sweep three years earlier, again delivered the telling blows. When rain halted New Zealand at 82-3 after 20 overs, they were set a revised 206 off 33. That seemed possible while Grant Elliott was thriving in an enforced promotion to No. 3 - Kane Williamson had broken a finger in the field - and especially when Corey Anderson whacked three quick sixes. But Rubel foxed Anderson with a slower ball, Brendon McCullum sliced the next delivery to backward point, and Mushfiqur Rahim clung on when James Neesham gloved a half-tracker - completing the third one-day hat-trick for Bangladesh. Rubel finished with 5.5-0-26-6 - the joint-best figures for Bangladesh, with Mashrafe bin Mortaza. Bangladesh lost three wickets in the first seven overs, and five in the last six, but were boosted by a fourth-wicket stand of 154 between the free-flowing Mushfiqur and - after spending 16 balls on nought - Naeem Islam, a late replacement when Shakib Al Hasan went down with dengue fever.
MoM: Rubel Hossain. One-day international debut: A. P. Devcich (New Zealand).
