Australia v England, 2013-14

Wisden's review of the second Twenty20 International, Australia v England, 2013-14

15-Apr-2014
At Melbourne, January 31, 2014 (floodlit). Australia won by eight wickets. Toss: England.
Australia sealed their third series win in three formats over a demoralised England, this time thanks to an emphatic victory with more than five overs to spare. The tourists' mood did not improve when reports filtered through from the UK that Andy Flower had resigned as team director. With the cricket itself following a predictable path, almost as much interest focused on the selection of the 39-year-old local favourite Brad Hodge, whose last taste of international cricket had come in a Test at Kingston in May 2008. Hodge was not required to bat, but did open the bowling with his occasional off-breaks, took a stunning catch at cover to remove Wright, then ran out Morgan with a direct hit as England fumbled to 55 for four. Morgan's entire bat was over the line - but it was in the air, having bounced up as he dived for the crease. Australia's ability to build pressure proved the difference, with Hazlewood reaping four wickets. England failed to hit a six in an innings which finished comfortably below par, on 130 for nine. White cracked another half-century - and became involved in a slanging match with Dernbach, whose three overs cost 42 - and Bailey made light work of the target.
Man of the Match: J. R. Hazlewood. Attendance: 64,385.
