played the number of matches during 1998. Umpire Jasbir Singh was officiating in his fourth match, while
umpire SK Tarapore was making his debut as international
umpire. He became the 77th Indian umpire to stand in a ODI. Sachin Tendulkar was playing his 226th match. He thus surpassed
Kapil Dev's tally of 225 matches. Now among Indians only Md Azharuddin
has appeared in more mat ches - 323. Sachin Tendulkar, while reaching his 24th ODI hundred,

and Mark Waugh (1301 runs in 27 matches @ 54.20) have scored more
runs than Tendulkar against New Zealand. This was Tendulkar's 68th fifty plus score (24 hundreds and 44
fifties) in ODIs which puts him ahead of Sri Lanka's Aravinda
De Silva who has 67 fifty plus scores on his name. Now only
West Indian Desmond Haynes with 74 such scores (17 hundreds
and 57 fifties) is ahead of Tendulkar. Tendulkar became the fifth Indian to carry his bat through a
complete innings after Sunil Gavaskar (thrice), Ravi Shastri, Manoj
Prabhakar and Saurav Ganguly. India's total (376-2) is the second highest team total in ODIs.
Only Sri Lanka's 398-5 against Kenya at Kandy on 06-03-1996
exceeds India's effort. India's previous highest was 373-6
against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999. The total also exceeds the highest made against New Zealand which
was 328-2 by Pakistan at Sharjah on 20-04-1994. It is also the highest total ever achieved in a ODI on Indian
soil. The previous record was 349-9 by New Zealand at Rajkot
on 05-11-99. The 331 run partnership between Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid also for second wicket against Sri Lanka at Taunton on
26-05-1999. Rahul Dravid scored his seventh hundred in his 105th match. Now only
Sachin Tendulkar (24) and Saurav Ganguly (8) have scored more ODI hundreds
than Dravid for India, while Azharuddin also has a tally of 7 hundreds. This was Dravid's highest score in ODIs. His previous highest was
145 against Sri Lanka at Taunton on 26-05-1999. Dravid has now scored 1713 runs in 40 matches (ave.47.58) in the
calendar year 1999. Only fellow team-mate Sachin Tendulkar has
aggregated more runs in a calendar year than Dravid - 1894
runs in 34 matches in 1998 (ave.65.31) Chris Drum by conceding the 85 runs off his bowling achieved the
dubious distinction of conceding most runs in a nine-over
spell in ODIs. Kenya's Martin Suji had also conceded 85 runs
in his 9 overs against Sri Lanka at Kandy on 06-03-1996. Drum's figures are the most expensive by a bowler against
India. Pakistan's Ata-ur-Rahman (at Sharjah on 15-04-1996) had
also conceded 85 runs but that performance had come in a 10-
over spell. Drum's figures are second most expensive by a New Zealander in a
ODI. The record, however is held by Martin Snedden, who
conceded 105 runs in his 12 overs against England at The Oval
on 09-06-1983.Tendulkar, when he caught Spearman, completed 75 catches in his
226th match. He became only the second Indian after Md
Azharuddin (153 catches in 323 matches) to do so. The 46 run-partnership between Scott Styris and Chris Drum is New
Zealand's highest for the tenth wicket against India. The
previous highest was of 28 runs between Richard Hadlee and
Ewan Chatfield at Adelaide on 25-01-1986. It is also the
second highest for New Zealand for the tenth wicket against
all countries after the 65 run-partnership between Martin
Snedden and Ewan Chatfield against Sri Lanka at Derby on
18-06-1983. This is the second highest partnership for the tenth wicket
against India after the 71 run-partnership between Andy
Roberts and Joel Garner for West Indies at Manchester on
09-06-1983. The victory margin of 174 runs is the highest for India in terms
of runs. India has previously beaten Sri Lanka by 157 runs at
Taunton on 26-05-1999. It is also the worst defeat inflicted over New Zealand in ODIs in
terms of runs. Australia had beaten New Zealand by 150 runs at
Christchurch on 04-03-1990.Tendulkar won the MoM award for the 35th time in his career.
