Essex have made their first signing after the appointment of Chris Silverwood as coach, bringing in former New Zealand U-19 bowler Matthew Quinn on a three-year contract. Quinn has a British passport so will not be registered as an overseas player.
A tall right-arm seamer, Quinn currently plays for Auckland in New Zealand domestic cricket. He was his country's leading wicket-taker at the 2012 U-19 World Cup and was involved with New Zealand A as recently as October.
Quinn, 22, has taken 62 wickets at 28.29 in 16 first-class matches, as well as making a solid start to his limited-overs career. He is expected to play all three formats for Essex next summer.
"I'm delighted to be joining Essex for the upcoming season and contributing to a successful changing room," Quinn said. "I look forward to arriving in the UK, and meeting all my team-mates, club staff and members for what will be an exciting season ahead."
Essex had been seeking fast-bowling cover after the departure of Reece Topley to Hampshire. David Masters, the long-time leader of Essex's attack, will be 38 next year and has recently undergone groin surgery, while 35-year-old Graham Napier has also been prone to injury.
Silverwood, who was confirmed as the successor to Paul Grayson on Thursday, said. "Matt is a tall fast bowler who can swing the ball. We've made no secret of the fact we want to bolster the bowling attack. Having looked at Matt play, alongside his record in New Zealand, he's got a good pedigree. He has played for New Zealand A in the past.
"He's got all the attributes to be successful here at Chelmsford. We're delighted to have him joining the club, subject to all the paperwork being completed."
