SNGPL move to top with win

A round-up of the Quaid-e-Azam Gold League matches that ended on November 15, 2014

Medium-pacer Sohail Khan and fast-bowler Abdur Rauf played critical roles to help Port Qasim Authority beat Islamabad Leopards by 45 runs. Port Qasim had been shot out for 170 in their first innings but Sohail's 8 for 91 skittled Leopards for 158, giving the side a crucial lead. The Port Qasim batsmen put up a better performance in their second innings and fifties from Daniyal Ahsan (88) and Khalid Latif (92) helped the side extend their meagre 12-run lead to 324. Leopards were 72 for 4 at one stage in their chase but rallied through half-centuries from Mohammad Irfan and Sarmad Bhatti. However, Rauf struck key blows in his 5 for 71 as Leopards were dismissed for 279.
Karachi Dolphins dominated with the bat in their drawn game against United Bank Limited in Karachi. Dolphins were struggling at 8 for 3 in the first innings after being put in to bat but fought back through fifties from Mohammad Waqas (87), Babar Hussain (75) and Faraz Ahmed (71). They were further boosted to 411 by an unbeaten 56 from No. 9 Babar Rehman, who then went on to take 5 for 52 during United Bank's innings. Babar's strikes and Mir Hamza's 4 for 74, helped Dolphins restrict United Bank to 291. Yasir Mushtaq and Saad Ali then struck unbeaten hundreds to underline Dolphins' dominance in the game as they finished with a formidable 376 for 3.
Fifties from openers Ammar Ali and Usman Liaqat helped Multan Tigers negotiate their survival during a 278-run chase in a drawn match against Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited. Liaqat's unbeaten 78 anchored the side after the fall of quick wickets, helping them reach 175 for 6. Both sides had periods of play when they struggled with the bat. ZTBL hauled themselves from 99 for 5 to 244 with fifties from Shahid Yousuf (75) and Rameez Alam (70). For Tigers, Ahmed Rasheed's 120 led the way but the side lost their last six wickets for 58 runs to fold for 282, ZTBL's left-arm medium-pacer Mohammad Khalil doing most of the damage with 6 for 85. ZTBL were more confident in their second innings, putting up 315 for 9. Yousuf scored 71, while Sharjeel Khan and Kashif Daud contributed fifties in the innings too.
A nine-wicket haul from medium-pacer Samiullah Khan and opener Naeemuddin's unbeaten 113 were the cornerstones of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited's four-wicket win over Peshawar Panthers, that helped them take a slender lead at the top of the points table. Samiullah's 6 for 31 in the first innings bowled Panthers out for a paltry 120, although SNGPL fared only marginally better, folding for 135 in the face of Taj Wali's 6 for 42 and Azizullah's 4 for 40. Samiullah inflicted damage on the Panthers' top order once again in the second innings and, with the help of Asad Ali (4-41) limited them to 237. SNGPL were in trouble at 92 for 6 in their 223-run chase but Naeemuddin and Imran Khalid (63) shepherded them to the win.
A knock of 86 from Zahid Mansoor and an unbeaten 63 from Usman Saeed steered Rawalpindi Rams to a three-wicket win over Water and Power Development Authority after they had stumbled to 85 for 6 in 209-run chase. WAPDA had made a good start to the match, putting up 316 runs in their first innings with nineties from Iftikhar Ahmed (96) and Ayaz Tasawwar (95). Rams in response, managed 270 runs but WAPDA lost their advantage in the second innings when the Rams bowlers bundled them out for 162. Rizwan Akbar (4-49) and Rashid Latif (3-38) were the main wicket-takers for Rams and their performances left the batsmen 209 to get for a win.
