Extra game scheduled after washout

There was frustration for all involved as Ireland's second Twenty20 international against Scotland was washed out without a ball being bowled on Friday. The abandonment led to a fourth game being added to the series, with the consent of the ICC, to be played at 3.30pm on Saturday.

The Bready groundstaff were steadfast in their efforts to try and have the square and outfield fit for play once the rain relented; this series is the first international cricket to be played in the region for over a decade. But once the rain clouds arrived from over the hills, there was inevitability about the outcome. The teams eventually shook hands shortly before 7.30pm local time with the light fading and the prospects of play all but gone.

Ireland had made three changes to their side from the one that was comprehensively beaten on Thursday. George Dockrell and Andrew Balbirnie were drafted in alongside Alex Cusack after Scotland captain Preston Mommsen had won the toss and asked the hosts, unsurprisingly, to bat under leaden skies but just as the locals were settling in for a delayed start, the rain returned and put paid to any hopes of action.

The lack of match practice in the shortest format will be a concern for John Bracewell, Ireland's new coach. Thursday's game was Ireland's first Twenty20 international since their defeat to Netherlands in the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh more than 12 months ago.

Two of Ireland's three games this summer have now been abandoned - hence the hasty decision to arrange an extra fixture. Saturday is at least forecast to be dry, unlike Sunday for the final instalment of the series.
