Full commentary

8.35pm: The game has been called off; South Africa win by 11 runs. So, a damp ending to a contest that threatened to spark into a classic. India's long spell on the road ends with another defeat ... but hey, at least everyone can look forward to the IPL now, eh?

Thanks for all your comments. You'll be able to read up on how Messrs Duckworth and Lewis denied India and gave South Africa B a notable win in Abhishek Purohit's report shortly. I've been Alan Gardner, you've been wonderful. Cheerio!

8.30pm: Sky have just suggested that there may be an decision on whether to call the game off in the next five minutes or so. With the rain still falling, that's not good news for India.

8.25pm: Still raining, though it appears to be slowing down a touch ...

"I support Jim," says Avinash Reddy. "Why consider this a pointless match. Apart from charity its also to celebrate the settlement of Indians in South Africa. There is lot of cause in this match and never to be considered pointless" Even if it gets washed out, Avinash?

8.10pm: The cut off time is in 50 minutes, at 9pm, with the rain still coming down. Just to be clear, the par score at this stage is 82 ... but India might not get another chance to level it in these conditions.

8pm: The super soppers are out but I suspect they might just be bobbing in the briny outfield at the moment. Firdose reckons the rain might be slowing up just a tad. If you can't wait for another ocular hit of ball-by-ball action, then I suggest you join Kanishkaa for West Indies v Australia in the second T20I from Barbados ...

And, in his best Helen Lovejoy voice, here's Jim: "Pointless match? Why is everyone lamenting so... It's the players who travel and toil and play, we and media need to watch and enjoy, from when has it become such a hard job to do and a lot to complain about?? After all, this match is for a good cause, shall we please watch it happily as a cricket fan. Please." That good cause is the Jacques Kallis Foundation, if you needed to ask.

7.55pm: The rain is still sheeting down at The Wanderers. If they do get on, though, it'll probably help India, with the diminished total usually favouring the chasing side in T20s. Anyway, here's some local knowledge from Steven: "I live a few km's from the Wanderers. Usually the stubborn rain comes from my side hitting the ground 10min later, the opposite of tonight. Let's hope it's just a flash of rain and that we will get the remaining overs in. Excellent drainage at the ground. Otherwise dare I say ... It will be a pointless ending to a pointless match!"

And Kishor is thinking along the same lines: "After coming so far for just one T20, a washed away game would be a shame!"

They're going to stay on for now, I think. Nope, I'm 100% wrong - they're scampering off and the covers are coming in the other direction. India are currently behind on D/L by 11 runs, though hopefully this Jo'burg squall will blow over soon enough

1
Parnell to Uthappa, 1 run

length ball, punched down the ground to long-off

And the rain cometh ...

1
Parnell to Gambhir, 1 run

dribbled out towards point for one

7.3
4
Parnell to Gambhir, FOUR runs

width for Gambhir, who slashes a length ball to the square boundary on the off side for a more authentic four

7.2
4
Parnell to Gambhir, FOUR runs

back of a length but it doesn't get up that much, Gambhir plays across the line and his top edge loops high, fine and down to long leg

7.1
Parnell to Gambhir, no run

pitched up, just outside off, driven hard, the arms swinging through the stroke ... but straight to cover

India are just four behind South Africa at the same stage. More from Parnell ...

Wayne Parnell 1-0-4-0

Here's Anant: "Too many dot balls when India's batting, not enough when bowling. That's the difference between the two sides so far. Saffers rotated strike extremely well and I just can't see India doing that."

There really is a racket in the stadium - and there's lightning in the skies, too. India need a bit of sturm and drang if they're going to win this chase ...

5.6
1
Parnell to Uthappa, 1 run

check drive down the ground, well stopped at mid-off

5.5
1
Parnell to Gambhir, 1 run

full toss, outside off stump, walks across and chops to deep backward square - maybe missed out on cashing in there?

Tsotsobe to Uthappa, no run

fiery bouncer, beats Uthappa's lusty swing outside off

1
Tsotsobe to Gambhir, 1 run

short ball, directed at the batsman's ribs, deflected to short fine leg and Theron misses with a dash at the stumps that would probably have left Uthappa short
