Australia win by 17 runs on the opening day of the international summer in the country. After all that's gone on, that feels the most important part. As so often, Australia's depth and confidence shone through. New Zealand didn't pace their chase very well but may consider they didn't have the rub of the green with the umpires. Ash Gardner produced the standout batting of the match, while all Australia's bowlers played a part. Australia will know there's room for improvement as well, but after a six-month break that's hardly surprising.

Player of the Match is Ash Gardner "Pretty good pitch, it held a bit. Our aim was to go left and right handers. Nice to spend some time in the middle."

Sophie Devine "They probably got 10-20 runs too many. With the bat we just let it slip away. We'll get back into it tomorrow."

Meg Lanning "I thought we fought really nicely, Ash's innings was excellent. We had the luxury of knowing what would work bowling on that wicket. We were under the pump a little."

I'll wrap up the coverage for today. We'll be back tomorrow afternoon for the second match and hope you can join us. Until then, from Andrew McGlashan, it's goodbye.

Schutt to Down, 1 run
swings to the on side against a length ball, trickles off the bottom edge to short fine leg

Andrew C: "NZ have been Schutt Down."

Schutt to Down, FOUR runs
strong shot, up and over the off side

Schutt has two balls to claim her maiden T20I five-wicket haul

Schutt to Jensen, OUT
taken at deep midwicket, that's four for Schutt...Jensen came down the pitch but just ended up offering catching practice
HNK Jensen c Gardner b Schutt 4 (4b 1x4 0x6) SR: 100.00
Schutt to Down, 1 run
that's a strong clip which almost carries to deep midwicket

Schutt to AC Kerr, OUT

AC Kerr c Molineux b Schutt 5 (5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 100.00

Australia have this wrapped up

Arunabh: "I am surprised no one in critisizing Devine's approach. If we removed her boundaries from her scores then she made only 7 off 30. Can't bat like that and expect to win against Australia."

You feel this has gone for New Zealand now

Schutt to Bates, OUT
and that's that! Such a good over from Schutt. This is a length ball, it's another toe end and lands in the hands of mid-off
SW Bates c Mooney b Schutt 33 (38b 2x4 0x6) SR: 86.84
Schutt to Bates, no run
nearly bowled! Stayed in her crease this time, swinging across the line, just clears the stumps
Schutt to Bates, no run
terrific bowling again, another superb change of pace, completely defeats as she charges down the pitch
Schutt to Martin, OUT
down the pitch, finds cover! This came off the toe end and didn't carry further than the edge of the circle. Pace off from Schutt, well bowled
KJ Martin c Lanning b Schutt 21 (16b 3x4 0x6) SR: 131.25
Schutt to Bates, 1 run
full outside off, heaved out to deep midwicket. Australia will be fine with singles

moving right across outside off and drags a very full delivery to deep midwicket
Jonassen to Martin, 1 run
full outside off, jabbed to backward point
Jonassen to Martin, FOUR runs
opts for the sweep again, and connects! Moving across the stumps, a more conventional sweep this time, beats deep square leg
Jonassen to Martin, no run
goes for the reverse sweep, the ball is wide outside off, can't make contact
Jonassen to Martin, FOUR runs
that's clever batting! Excellent use of the crease, walked across the stumps then plays a standing sweep backward of square
Jonassen to Bates, 1 run
clubbed down the ground to long-on

It needs to start going for New Zealand. Schutt is back. Not she isn't, it's Jonassen
