8.15pm: Thanks for sticking around, we got a decent crack in the end. Gnasher's report is bubbling up, we'll be back for more fun and games at The Oval tomorrow. From Alex, Devashish and myself, g'night and good luck.

8.10pm: Time for the speeches. New Zealand captain, Brendon McCullum: "Kane and Corey gave us a chance but it wasn't until they got going and in the end we were short. It's one of those things [dropping catches], Nathan is normally very good. The run rate has kept us going, it'll be hard to cheer for Australia but if it keeps us in the tournament, then good."

England captain and Man of the Match, Alastair Cook: "It was quite a stressful day, especially with those last few overs. We thought we were above the rate but Anderson and Williamson took it on, luckily we got over the line. We were very good in the field today and I thought we were good with the bat, maybe 10 runs short. We're happy to be in the semi-final, that was a good performance. We're two games away now. Graeme's got a calf injury but we're very lucky to have James Tredwell to step in."

8pm: At one stage this game looked like one for Davey Jones' locker but England managed to dredge it up from the depths and secure a win that takes them through, regardless of what else happens in Group A. The three other teams are still alive - though New Zealand have made it very difficult for Australia, by keeping their net run rate in decent shape. England are likely to win the group, and therefore play Group B runners-up South Africa, unless Sri Lanka win by a big margin.

W
Anderson to McCullum, OUT

line and length, swings and nicks off, Anderson finishes with a wicket! Too good for McCullum and just too much to do for New Zealand - a 10-run win means England are through to the semi-finals

Nathan McCullum c †Buttler b Anderson 13 (11b 1x4 1x6 19m) SR: 118.18

N-Mac's interested in a no-ball, too, but he'll not get one

23.5
6
Anderson to McCullum, SIX runs

full toss from Anderson, dipping just under waist height as McCullum crunches it way back straight back down the ground for six!

23.5
1w
Anderson to McCullum, 1 wide

bouncer, over the batsman - called on height

23.4
Anderson to McCullum, no run

length ball, spots him moving outside off again and gets this right over the tramline as McCullum swings and misses

New Zealand need three sixes or snookers from here...

23.3
Anderson to McCullum, no run

get this one right up to the stumps again, outside off and McCullum again misses the yorker

These are useful runs, given NRR could still decide qualification from Group A

23.2
4
Anderson to McCullum, FOUR runs

full toss on leg stump, doesn't get the yorker right this time and McCullum bunts it for four to deep square leg

23.1
Anderson to McCullum, no run

again McCullum shifts outside off, perfect wide yorker from Anderson and the batsman fails to get anything on it

23.1
1w
Anderson to McCullum, 1 wide

slung down on a length, McCullum had moved across in advance and Anderson went wider

Final over, New Zealand need something special. Though don't forget what Ravi Bopara did the other day... Here's Mahendra: "@sahil, I am frustrated too. Had Kane stayed it would have been a different equation... Steve Davis has forgotten that its some part of the foot and not the show that should be behind the line."

pitched up outside off, squeezes the ball out to backward point, they run anyway

22.5
1
Bresnan to Mills, 1 run

full and straight, in the blockhole, Mills keeps his eye on it and digs it out into the covers

22.4
4
Bresnan to Mills, FOUR runs

short and sliding down the leg side, Mills helps the ball through backward square and it beats Bopara's despairing dive

"Third umpire Steve Davis was born in...... [drumroll].... London." Good spot, James

1lb
Bresnan to McCullum, 1 leg bye

bouncer, quick and straight and that's sconed him, deflects off the helmet as McCullum misses with his pull shot, leg bye to third man

22.2
W
Bresnan to Anderson, OUT

full and straight, slogged down the ground and taken at long-on! Anderson catches his namesake and Bresnan claims the wicket, decent hit but straight at one of England's best fielders. The fat lady is taking a sip of water

"Everyone else in the world including Broad thought it was a front foot no-ball except for Steve Davis, which really mattered!!!" It was generous, Manic, though I think third umpires are loath to give those. In other news, England are well behind the over rate

21.6
2
Broad to Anderson, 2 runs

touch short and short-arm jabbed forcefully over midwicket, Bopara does well on the boundary to stop it bouncing over the rope

Here's Sahil: "Could not believe it was not given a no-ball...absolutely ridiculous. There was not even a nano meter behind that line"

21.5
1
Broad to McCullum, 1 run

hosp across and nudges one to leg

21.4
Broad to McCullum, no run

length and in the channel, McCullum doesn't move his feet, drives and is beaten

21.3
1
Broad to Anderson, 1 run

length ball, Anderson backs away and carts flat down the ground to long-on

That was a helluva call for the third umpire, though they often seem to err in the bowler's favour. Anderson on strike, Nathan McCullum's out to the middle

21.2
W
Broad to Williamson, OUT

full and fast, tries to go big but it spoons into the air and Anderson takes it at cover - but they check for the no-ball. It's so close, just a few atoms of rubber in it but Steve Davis in the third umpire's chair decides it's okay and Williamson trudges off to muted applause!

Kane Williamson c Anderson b Broad 67 (54b 8x4 1x6 92m) SR: 124.07
21.1
1
Broad to Anderson, 1 run

length ball on the stumps, steps away and jams the ball into the covers

Cook turns back to Broad, saving Anderson for the death
