Queensland collapsed in spectacular fashion as Tasmania swept to victory by an innings and 40 runs in their last preliminary match of the season. The Bulls, who lost their first eight wickets for 14, still finished on top of the table and will host the final from March 24, but the win was a huge boost for Tasmania and lifted them to second place. They must now rely on the two remaining matches going their way to make the decider.
Resuming at 0 for 50 in their second innings, Jimmy Maher and Brendan Nash took the score to 72 before Maher was nailed by Ben Hilfenhaus. That triggered a sensational collapse as Queensland lost three more wickets at the same score in the space of eight balls.
Queensland moved along to 5 for 86 before they lost another bunch of wickets - Andy Bichel, Ashley Noffke and Lachlan Stevens all fell without a run being added. Chris Hartley and Nathan Hauritz then put together 53 to ensure the total went into three figures, but by then the match result had been sealed. Brendan Drew finished as the most successful bowler with 4 for 28, while Hilfenhaus took three, giving him match figures of 6 for 85.
The result left Maher, the Bulls captain, shellshocked. "I didn't have time to think," he told AAP. "[It was just] a scurry of pads and gloves and everything in the dressing-room." However, Maher denied the defeat would impact their preparations for next week's final. "I think it will have the opposite effect," he said. "I think we've always been poor in dead rubbers for some reason ... I'm still going into the finals very, very confident. We've learnt from a few things and we know we've always got next week. Come tomorrow they'll be four teams that haven't got next week so that's a plus."
Tasmania's hopes of making it to the final now depend on the results of the two other ongoing matches, between New South Wales and South Australia, and Victoria and Western Australia. If neither of those matches end in a decisive result, Tasmania will be through to the final.
"Apparently the forecast [for matches] in Melbourne and Adelaide tomorrow is for rain so you never know," Dan Marsh, the Tasmania captain, said. "We've done all we can in this game. We came here to get six points and we've done it so we're extremely happy with that."
