Scorecard
Rob Quiney's 92, and a debut four-wicket haul by Jason Behrendorff took centrestage on the opening day at the MCG. Victoria were helped by the lower order to lift the score to 301, and they strengthened their advantage by taking two late wickets to leave Western Australia in a spot of bother at 6 for 2.
Behrendorff, the left-arm seamer originally from New South Wales, got the first couple of breakthroughs for Western Australia, dismissing Aaron Finch and Chris Rogers. David Hussey, captaining in place of the injured Cameron White, was out nicking Nathan Rimmington after lunch. Hussey stood his ground for a while, expressing disappointment at the umpire's decision. Quiney hit 13 fours in his knock before he was dismissed dragging Behrendorff onto his stumps.
At 5 for 153, Victoria needed a revival. Glenn Maxwell led a lower-order fightback with a brisk 61 off 80 balls. Jayde Herrick made 39 to lift the score from 8 for 245 to 301.
Western Australia were set back by James Pattinson, who claimed the wickets of Liam Davis and Rimmington.
