Scorecard
Nathan Lyon and Steve O'Keefe took six wickets between them and restricted Tasmania to 237 on the first day at Bankston Oval in Sydney.
Having opted to bat, Tasmania opener Dom Michael was run-out by Sean Abbott for just 1 in the second over. Jordan Silk and Ed Cowan then put on a 84-run stand for the second wicket as a remedy but neither could move on and make a big score. O'Keefe was especially difficult to score off with figures of 18.5-6-37-3.
Lyon had Silk caught behind for 54 and O'Keefe removed Cowan for 31. Abbott returned to pick up Alex Doolan, the Tasmania captain, for 20 and the score had slipped to 122 for 5. Ben Dunk was left to handle a rearguard but his 136-ball 39 did not receive much support. Tasmania's second-best partnership of the innings of 42 runs came for the final wicket between Andrew Fekete and Jackson Bird.
New South Wales' Ryan Carters and Scott Henry faced one over each to put on 4 runs before stumps.
