all over, and what a shot to finish it! Jayawardene backs away and drives the ball superbly over extra cover, all inside-out, to clinch a seven-wicket win
Kings XI won by 7 wickets (with 7 balls remaining)
So in the end a rather comfortable win for Kings XI Punjab. Huge smiles between Jayawardene and Marsh as they hug and walk off. Really, a top-class effort from young Marsh on IPL debut, asked to open the innings and producing a nerveless unbeaten 84 off 62 balls. The visitors won the toss and opted to field, and had Hyderabad in some bother with a brace of wickets around a good 48 from VVS Laxman, before Rohit Sharma played a blinder to get his side to 164 for 8. But in the end Hyderabad had no answer to Marsh, who batted throughout the innings and forged a special partnership of 81 in eight overs with Jayawardene, unbeaten on a 23-ball 45. Punjab are fourth on the points table with three wins from five games. Hyderabad are two places below with one positive outcome from five attempts.
Lets move to the post-match shindig: First we have Laxman: "We were 20 runs short, and had no momentum. Rohit played well to get us that far. He has extreme potential and uses his brain. Everyone is trying hard but sometimes it doesn't click. We should have gone on. I was in good nick but should have continued. We lost wickets at the wrong time."
Now over to Yuvraj: "The team effort was great. Now we know who Shaun Marsh is. We had to assess conditions over here. The bowlers did a good job and Shaun and Mahela played excellent knocks. You don't want to leave the runs to the lower-order batters. We're gelling together nicely, everyone knows how to back each other."
No surprises, its Marsh who's Man of the Match: "Look, it was just great to get a game and to be out here and get involved with some great players is special. Twenty20 cricket is a bit of a hit-and-miss game. Mahela came out and did so well to set us up for the rest of the series."
So that, friends, is all we have for you tonight. Come back and see us tomorrow, for game between the Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils at 20:00 local, 14:30 GMT. Until next time, on behalf of scorer Raju and the rest of the gang at Cricinfo, this is Jamie Alter saying goodnight.
Two runs to win ...
well its flicked off the pads to Ojha at deep square leg, so thats one
Just three to win ...can he do it with a boundary, and raise a career best?
full toss, he doesn't time it well but swings a single to extra cover
that one swings well wide of the stumps to lower the equation
pitches just outside leg, swings in, and Marsh is beaten on the attempted flick but scampers a quick single to gully at Jayawardene's insistence, off the inside-edge
Just six more to win ...
yorker-length delivery outside off stump, steered to short third man
Marsh has now top-scored tonight. Five runs away from going past his career-best. RP is back.
and he's spanked the pants off that one! Marsh clears the front leg and goes downtown in style, clubbing Zoysa for a straight six to end the over
now its a pick-up shot over mid-on's head, dropping in no-man's-land
slants down the pads, the inside-edgenarrowly misses hitting leg stump
tries to pull a short one but takes it on the arm and it goes nowhere
exposes all three stumps, then drops the ball safely along the ground towards short third man for yet another easy single, so coolly
full down leg stump and he clips it to short fine leg for a single
Three overs to go. Punjab have this in the bag, you feel. But this is a strange game. Zoysa comes back. Interestingly, not one bowler has bowled two overs on the trot.
A well-paced, sensible innings from the young Australian
steps out to leg and tucks the last ball to midwicket to keep strike
well bowled, tight on the stumps but Jayawardene just pushes it to deep mid-on for an easy single as runs keep ticking over
low full toss, he reaches out and slaps it past backward point
good length on the stumps and he plays it back towards Bangar
This is the third-highest score for a batsman on IPL debut. Marsh's domestic Twenty20 best is 86.
another streaky shot, Marsh swiping across the line and inside-edging past leg stump for the ball to dribble down to the fine-leg boundary
Now he moves around the stumps to the left-hander
too short and Jayawardene cuts past point out to the sweeper
25 runs with seven wickets and 24 balls remaining? You have to say Punjab are in control. Laxman calls back Bangar for his last over. He's been tidy so far. Over the stumps.
full again, Jayawardene dabs to extra cover, there's some hesitation but he harries down to the other end and evades the throw from the fielder
now he gets a low full toss and clips it past mid-on for a single
That le francais shot raises the 50-run partnership
