Adams stars as Patel makes a point

Hampshire 287 for 9 (Adams 112, Patel 5-77) trail Nottinghamshire 326 (Fletcher 92) by 39 runs
Scorecard
Jimmy Adams, likely to be the next captain of Hampshire but modestly proclaiming that he is not a natural leader of men, achieved his highest score at the Rose Bowl on a day when Samit Patel, unloved by the England selectors, took five wickets for the first time in his career. Adams' innings of 112, scored off 197 balls with 20 fours, was notable for the excellence of his driving and the manner in which he held the upper order together on a pitch starting to take spin.
Nottinghamshire's last two wickets had taken their first innings total to 326, David Griffiths picking up his third and fourth wickets - not quite the best figures of his career - when he had Darren Pattinson held at second slip before bowling Charlie Shreck. Reward, indeed, for steady, persistent and quickish bowling on a largely unresponsive pitch. Yet whereas the bulk of the runs in this innings had come from batsmen down the order, Hampshire began solidly and methodically. Little altered later in the day, even after Adams was out.
The left-handed combination of Adams and Michael Carberry put on 57 before the latter was caught at second slip, prodding at Luke Fletcher's medium pace. Another triumph, then, for the 20 year-old Nottingham allrounder who had made 92 in such an enterprising manner on the first day. He looked to be bowling within himself here, or perhaps more to the point feels the need to work up some pace as he is a man of some size. Later, he was to have Chris Benham held at second slip.
Michael Lumb contributed 43 with six fours and a six, giving the impression that he is at his happiest opening the batting in the one-day game, before he was stumped yards down the pitch by Chris Read when facing Patel's left-arm spin (and spin is what it was). This brought to the wicket James Vince, an 18 year-old from Wiltshire who has come through the Hampshire academy, and who, according to Duncan Fletcher, the former England coach now undertaking some consultancy work with the county, reminds him of Michael Vaughan.
High praise for one so young. Vince commenced his innings in thrilling style on his debut, striking three fours in four balls off Shreck. Alas for him, he then had to restart his innings after the tea interval and promptly edged a good-length ball from Mark Ealham to second slip. Adams, however, square cut Patel for four to reach his century, before he was caught at short leg off the same bowler, the excessive bounce surprising him.
Patel bowled 27 overs in succession from the Media Centre End, removing Imran Tahir and Griffiths shortly before the close, appealing for everything, and doubtless looking to prove a point or two to anyone who considers himself to be out of condition. Even if he is, he can still bowl - and, for that matter, bat. Hampshire finished the day 39 runs in arrears, one wicket in hand. The concern they will have is that they will be batting last. And Patel will be looking for plenty more wickets.
