Scorecard
Josh Hazlewood rewrote the record books with a remarkable seven-wicket haul that set up victory for New South Wales in their opening match of the one-day season against South Australia. Hazlewood collected 7 for 36, the best figures ever by a New South Wales bowler in a domestic one-dayer and third behind Shaun Tait and Carl Rackemann on the all-time list.
Hazlewood picked up the final two wickets of the South Australia innings in successive balls in the 50th over as the Redbacks were dismissed for 244. Things had started in shaky fashion for South Australia as they stumbled to 3 for 23 before Callum Ferguson (82) and Alex Ross (54) rebuilt the innings with a 136-run partnership.
Both men fell to Hazlewood but South Australia's captain Johan Botha was able to steer the Redbacks with an unbeaten 41. The New South Wales chase could hardly have had a worse start when Peter Nevill was lbw to Gary Putland second ball of the innings but Nic Maddinson and Scott Henry steadied wonderfully with a 103-run stand.
Maddinson finished with 84 and Kurtis Patterson made 43 as New South Wales reached their target with four wickets in hand in the 49th over. Shaun Tait's one-day comeback after an absence of nearly four years was disappointing, as he finished with 0 for 68 from his 9.1 overs.
