full on fifth stump, driven along the turf to long-on for one. UAE have clinched their first ever win in an ICC World Cup tournament! Namibia fall short of the Super 12s. Netherlands are joining Sri Lanka in the Super 12s!
U.A.E. vs Namibia, 10th Match, First Round Group A at Geelong, T20 WC, Oct 20 2022 - Match Result
David Wiese and Trumpelmann's 70-run partnership is NAM's highest for the 8th wicket in T20Is, breaking the record of 23 between David Wiese and Jan Frylinck
This is the lowest match aggregate (289) involving U.A.E. & Namibia in T20Is
10.31 pm David Wiese is beyond devastated in the Namibia dugout. The last two overs by Basil Hameed and CP Rizwan in the first innings - three sixes were hit in the last eight balls - got UAE up to a total that was just enough. Namibia meanwhile could only manage 12 runs off their last 12 balls in the chase having got the equation down to 20 off 12 balls, and that too with UAE forced to bring an extra fielder into the ring for the final over after taking too long to bowl their overs. UAE used a player to bowl the final over who had bowled a total of 3.4 overs in T20Is coming into his 20th T20I today. But Waseem somehow conceded just six runs with his medium pace in the final over to get UAE across the line. At the same time, Namibia are KO'd and Netherlands' tournament continues.
Muhammad Waseem is named Player of the Match not only for his half-century in the first innings but for his unlikely death bowling.
Ajay Dhanak: "Don't forget the excellent penultimate over from Zahoor. He came in after the expensive over and against momentum, gave just 5 of his 6 legal deliveries. The 14 run cushion is a lot, ask Arshdeep."
Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus: "I thought we did well in patches with the ball to keep them to under 150, but I think it was much higher than par. All in all, quite disappointing to let them get away with a few cheap soft balls in between but I thought the fielding and bowling stuck together quite nicely. [Asked how it feels to beat Sri Lanka on day one but not qualify for the Super 12s] That's the art of tournament cricket, the momentum swings that happen. Often the momentum swings aren't in your control and you need to as a professional, react well. After the high of the first game, the momentum swung against us and we couldn't quite get over the line and play well enough cricket for the next two games to get through. [On Wiese] He's one of those experienced guys that is a matchwinner. He plays all around the world and lots of the guys in the team have learned a lot from him. He showed once again today that he's world-class, taking it close out of nowhere. That was sort of the trend of the last two games, really being out of it and showing what we are about, which is a well-coached unit and a bunch of guys that stick together quite nicely. But as I said, I don't think we played enough to get through."
UAE captain CP Rizwan: "First of all, I would like to thank almighty Allah. It is a great moment for UAE Cricket, first ever victory in a World Cup. So I'm really grateful. I would first of all like to thank our coach, Robin [Singh] sir, and our management who kept belief in us. We were doing it in patches but it was just a matter of time. Today all departments clicked so I'm really happy for the win. [On bowling Waseem at the end] It was instinctive decision because he used to bowl a lot of death bowling in our domestic cricket. I thought since there was a little dew, fast bowler or medium pacer can do the job. So I backed my instinct and he did the job. [On the impact of this win in the UAE] It will build momentum going forward for UAE Cricket. We want to grow on this and show world cricket that we are here not just to compete but to make an impact."
Well what a final day of Group A. Sri Lanka storm to the top of the group while Netherlands slip into the Super 12s through the back door after UAE does them a huge favor by knocking off Namibia. It means that Sri Lanka go into Super 12s Group 1 with Afghanistan, Australia, England, New Zealand and a team TBD from Group B. Meanwhile Netherlands will be paired in Group 2 with Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, South Africa and a team TBD from Group B.
What could be in store for the final day of Group B at Hobart? Come back and join us tomorrow to find out as Scotland plays Zimbabwe and Ireland takes on West Indies with all four teams still in with a shot to advance to the Super 12s. That's it for today's live coverage. On behalf of my commentary partner Srinidhi Ramanujam, I'm Peter Della Penna. Take care!
Netherlands players and families are celebrating in the stands. The match is mathematically UAE's and with it a spot in the Super 12s for the Dutch.
low full toss on off, driven along the ground to long-on for one.
Wiese is distraught in the dugout.
match-winning catch on the boundary! Full on fifth stump, Wiese winds up and tries to clear long-on. Sharafu was well in off the rope but recovers magnificently to backpedal and leap high in the air to reach above his head and intercept this with a brilliant catch while sticking the landing two yards inside the rope. It would've been six if he didn't cling on.
Odean: "Have to say this year has had the best qualifying rounds. Every match has gone down the wire and for a neutral fan nothing better. Go associate nations they can be really proud and hopefully they get more opportunities"
full on middle, flicked to long-on for a very long single. Quick relay by Sharafu to deny the second.
ShahSafeer: "A first super over this tournament, anyone? "
yorker on leg stump, jammed out behind square for one.
Four boundary riders are at deep square leg, deep midwicket, long on and point sweeper.
full on off, flicked through midwicket along the ground for two.
Waseem to bowl the last over. UAE has to bring in an extra fielder into the ring having gone over their allotted time.
Azweer : "Waseem will be cursing himself for dropping that catch.."
That catch was a very difficult swirling skier. The bigger issue was the missed runout that followed in the same sequence moments after the drop when nobody covered the stumps with Wiese six yards short as Waseem flicked a relay to the striker's end. Everyone stopped playing on UAE. Nobody was prepared for an alternate scenario if the catch went down. Terrible match awareness. Reminded me of a similar missed runout bungle committed by UAE involving Chirag Suri, Aravind and Waseem during an ODI in Texas in June where nobody covered the stumps.
Trumpelmann swings over a low full toss on seventh stump.
Duncan Ward: "This World Cup has been fantastic so far, hasn't it? A real advert for always including the associate teams."
yorker on off stump, jammed out into the pads and comes back to Zahoor.
yorker on fifth stump jammed out to long-off for one.
slower wide yorker is scuffed out into midwicket for one.
goes for yorker, winds up as a shin high full toss on fourth stump punched to long-off for two.
full on fifth stump, driven straight to extra cover.
wide yorker, too wide to play at. Wide called.
Zahoor back. To make matters worse for UAE. They have one minute to complete their overs. Once they go over the allotted time, they will have to bring an extra fielder into the 30-yard ring.
A match-winning half-century? Well that's a Crictos NFT moment in my book.

full on off, flicked through midwicket for one. Half-century up for Wiese in 31 balls, second in T20Is, both of them in the T20 World Cup with the previous one happening last year vs the Netherlands.
short and wide, slices a cut flat over backward point for six! Wiese muscled this and it barely clears the rope.
full toss on fifth stump, flicked into vacant midwicket for two.
low full toss wide outside off, one-handed tennis backhand swat over extra cover for two. It brings up a half-century stand.
back of a length on fourth stump, Wiese slices this very fine past the keeper through short third man to the rope.
full on seventh stump, driven to mid-on for one.
dropped! And a missed runout too! Full on fifth stump, Wiese skies a slog straight up into vacant midwicket. Waseem is the closest fielder and goes after it trying to take this over the shoulder. It went a mile high and he can't claim this as it bursts through his hands on a difficult swirling skier. To make matters worse, nobody is covering the stumps at the striker's end! Where the hell is Aravind the keeper?! Waseem picked up the drop immediately and zinged a throw to the keeper's end and would've had Wiese out by six yards but there was nobody covering the stumps! Incredible mental lapse! Aravind was standing in no man's land 10 yards to the left of the stumps at square leg doing absolutely nothing. Nobody else covered the stumps either. Lots of UAE fielders with hands on hips standing around doing nothing.
