Scorecard
Western Australia gained a useful first-innings lead before South Australia struck late on day two of the Sheffield Shield match at the WACA.
On a day that was notable for Joel Paris taking three wickets in as many balls - though not within the same match - Sam Raphael, Jake Lehmann and Alex Ross made handy contributions without going on to the sort of score that Hilton Cartwright had managed for WA.
His century lifted WA to 311 from the depths of 6 for 109, and left SA with a sizeable chase. They were immediately on the back foot when Jake Weatherald was squared up by Paris' first ball and pouched by Shaun Marsh in the slips, a third wicket to follow the yorkers with which he had taken WA to victory over Queensland in Perth last week.
After Mark Cosgrove squandered another start when he fell to Michael Hogan, the captain Travis Head was also out first ball, and from there SA never looked likely to push ahead.
Raphael, Lehmann and Ross played handily, before WA secured an 81-run first innings advantage. Hogan finished with figures of 4 for 49 in 14 overs. SA were additionally handicapped by the absence of the seamer Nick Benton, who suffered a shoulder injury in the field on the first day.
Left with a handful of overs before stumps, Cameron Bancroft felt the strain of keeping wicket for 56.5 overs as he fell quickly to Chadd Sayers, before Joe Mennie found a way past Marcus Harris. Shaun Marsh and Adam Voges, however, hung on till stumps.
