The joker in the pack (8:32)

Unassuming, undemonstrative Jimmy turned the 1983 semi-final and final India's way (8:32)

Facing the two-time world champions and setting them a target of 183 in the World Cup final? What were India thinking? The score could have been worse if Mohinder Amarnath hadn't chipped in with a composed 26 (off 80 balls). But even then, the only question on everyone's minds would have been: how soon can West Indies wrap up the chase? India got two cruical breaks: Balwinder Sandhu's early dismissal of Gordon Greenidge and Kapil Dev's incredible catch to dismiss Viv Richards. But West Indies had a strong lower order, Nos. 7 and 8, Jeff Dujon and Malcolm Marshall, who put on 43 together. Enter Amarnath, whose pace, on the best of days, could be described as innocuous. He dismissed both Dujon and Marshall, and for good measure, picked up the final wicket as well. India won the World Cup and the game was never the same again. Roger Binny, Kris Srikkanth, Sandeep Patil, Sharda Ugra, Ayaz Memon and Mark Nicholas look back on that historic day.
