Noted Indian sports journalist Pradeep Vijayakar died on Saturday night at the age of 59 following a struggle against cancer. Several members of the cricketing fraternity, including players, coaches and administrators from Mumbai, joined other Indian sportspersons in paying him his last respects at the Shivaji Park crematorium. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

An assistant editor at the Times of India, Vijayakar wrote on cricket, cue sports, shooting, squash, rugby, table tennis, hockey, kabaddi and horse racing. He also worked for the Free Press Journal newspaper and Sportsweek magazine, in addition to doing radio and television commentary.

Before his writing days, Vijayakar played cricket alongside Sunil Gavaskar for his alma mater, the St. Xavier's College, and also represented Shivaji Park Youngsters and Khar Gymkhana.
