The opening stand between David Warner and Phil Hughes set the tone for the NSW innings, as they put on 62 in under seven overs to lay the platform for a sizable score. Warner was ruthless in his 48, and his onslaught helped his team reach an imposing 169 on a difficult pitch.

Simon Katich pulled off a masterstroke, bringing on Nathan Hauritz as early as the second over. Hauritz answered his captain's call, bowling Rob Quiney with one that didn't spin and trapping Brad Hodge in front to one that turned prodigiously. The damage had been done, with both openers back in the hut with just on the board.

Moises Henriques received the hammering of a lifetime at the hands of Kieron Pollard, but he made amends for his lapse with a three-for, stifling the middle order and shutting out the opposition. Two of his victims were big hitters - David Hussey and Cameron White - and once they were sent back, Victoria had no hope.
