Gus Mackay has quit as Sussex's chief executive to take up a new post as Surrey's managing director of cricket.
MacKay, 41, who played three ODIs for Zimbabwe, had been at Hove since April 2006. Before that he was chief of operations at Leicestershire.
"Gus's appointment is an exciting step forward for the whole of Surrey cricket," Paul Sheldon, Surrey's chief executive, said. "He has a rich blend of experience, both as a successful cricketer and as an administrator which will add great value to our whole organisation".
"This is a fantastic opportunity for me to work at Surrey in this new and exciting role," Mackay said. "Hopefully the experiences that I have gained over the years both on and off the field will stand me in good stead to meet the demands of the job. It's a great time to be involved in the game and this role clearly demonstrates Surrey's intentions. It is important that all aspects of Surrey cricket, which include the professional and recreational game, work towards achieving successful sides at all levels."
It is unclear where this appointment leaves Alan Butcher, Surrey's coach, whose role has been the subject of increasing speculation as the county's form has slipped.
Mackay's departure could open the door for Chris Adams to take over at Hove. Adams has made no secret of his wish to move into an administrative role when his playing career ends. He has recently been linked with a non-playing role at Hampshire.
