Watson hospitalised as Australia suffer

Australia suffered a major scare when Shane Watson was rushed to hospital in Chandigarh with chest and stomach pains early on Tuesday morning.

"The initial test and ultrasounds are fine," a team spokesman said. "We are just waiting on the blood test and other results."

John Buchanan, Australia's coach, said that after the initial alarm he was optimistic that Watson would be better in time for Sunday's final Group-A match against India in nearby Mohali. "As far as I know at the moment, he is in hospital and they are just doing all the tests," Buchanan told AAP. "They have diagnosed gastritis so that should pass within 24 or 48 hours."

Alex Kountouris, the team physiotherapist, said later in the day Watson had a range of tests at the hospital. "The results indicate that he has gastritis, which commonly causes heart-burn and chest pain," he said. "Shane will be re-assessed later this evening with a view to bringing him back to the team hotel."

Several of the Australian squad, including Glenn McGrath and Michael Clarke, missed training after coming down with stomach complaints. "We've had a couple of bouts of sickness already," Buchanan said. "We're taking every possible precaution but nonetheless sometimes those things happen."
