Smith leads Middlesex charge

Ed Smith put in another impressive performance as Middlesex beat Kent by 20 runs. Smith and Owais Shah put on 62 for the first wicket to set a solid platform for Middlesex. Although Martin van Jaarsveld and James Tredwell took two wickets each Smith's 85 from 59 balls held the innings together. Kent struggled to 75 for 4 and no one could replicate Smith's innings so Michael Carberry's 48 was only a face-saver for Kent.

Hampshire won a low scoring match by three wickets against Surrey through an eighth wicket stand of 53 between James Adams and Shaun Udal. Hampshire slumped to 66 for 7, chasing 119, as Nayan Doshi and Harbhajan Singh took two wickets each. But Udal took advantage of the return of the Surrey seamers to steer his side home. Surrey's batting had also failed to impress, apart from Rikki Clarke who made 52 from 44 balls. Richard Logan took 4 for 37 and James Bruce 3 for 20.

Alex Loudon spun Warwickshire to a convincing 54-run win against Glamorgan. He took 5 for 33 with his offspin, and began by breaking a threatening stand of 78 between Matthew Elliott and Sourav Ganguly. Loudon ran through Glamorgan's middle-order as they tried to maintain a required run rate that started at more than 10 an over. Warwickshire's impressive 205 for 7 was based on a series of useful contributions down the batting order. James Troughton top-scored with 42 and Neil Carter pitched in with 38 from 23 balls.
