Canterbury 291 for 7 (Stead 112*, Bond 52* Yovich 4-70) v Northern Districts
Scorecard
An unbeaten 112 by Gary Stead helped Canterbury overcome early wobbles and finish the opening day of their match against Northern Districts on a respectable 291 for 7. Canterbury started poorly, losing Michael Papps, their opener, for a duck. Wickets continued to fall regularly, and a shaky 109 for 4 soon changed to 192 for 7, before Shane Bond showed his prowess with the bat, making an unbeaten 52 and adding 91 in an undefeated eighth-wicket stand. Stead, though, was the star, batting patiently for 291 balls and hitting 15 fours in his knock. For Northern Districts, Joseph Yovich was the most successful bowler, taking 4 for 70.
Auckland 12 for 0 trail Central Districts 214 (Ingram 45, Mills 4-54) by 202 runs
Scorecard
A fine effort in the field by Auckland restricted Central Districts to just 214 on the opening day of the State Championship match at Napier. Central Districts won the toss and chose to bat, but were pegged back by some fine bowling by Andre Adams and Kyle Mills. Adams took care of the top order, nailing three of the first four batsmen, while Mills then took over, dismissing four middle and lower-order batsmen. Peter Ingram (45), Bevan Griggs (36) and Ross Taylor (33) all got starts, but none of them carried to make a substantial score.
