Mitchell Marsh sidelined after minor groin surgery

Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the resumption of the Sheffield Shield after requiring minor surgery to a groin injury sustained from a nasty knock taken while batting.

Marsh will miss the match against New South Wales in Bankstown before being reassessed.

"Mitch was hit in the groin region while batting and was not able to complete training yesterday," WA sports science sports medicine manager Nick Jones said. "As a result of the impact, Mitch has undergone a minor surgical procedure and he won't be available for this upcoming Shield fixture.

"Mitch's recovery will be monitored closely over the coming week, before a decision can be made around his availability for the Round 8 Shield match."

The final stage of the Shield season is shaping as critical for Marsh if he is to have any chance of featuring for Australia in the medium term after a season where he has lost his place in both the Test and ODI teams.

He was dropped from the Test side after facing India in Melbourne and was then omitted for the one-day tour of India leaving him a tough road to play in either the World Cup to the Ashes.

When Australia bolstered their Test squad with an allrounder for the final match against Sri Lanka it was Marcus Stoinis who earned a call up.
