AB de Villiers v Kevin Pietersen

AB de Villiers
Runs 8657 Ave 37.15 SR 149.77
AB de Villiers' brilliance lies not just in the runs he's scored but the manner of their accumulation; this format has never seen a player as stupendously talented as the South African. If T20 cricket is the format where batsmen are free to show the extent of their capabilities, de Villiers took what that really meant to a different level. No one with over 3000 runs has a better career strike rate at the IPL than his 151.23, and he has enjoyed personal success in T20 franchises around the world. His international career has been slightly more mixed, even if he's the second highest run-scorer for South Africa. A 28-ball 69 against England at the 2014 T20 World Cup set up a classic win; he led that side to the semi-finals. However, he hasn't quite won the T20 trophies you'd expect for a player of his calibre, having played for sides that have historically struggled in that department. South Africa aside, he has turned out for the Delhi Daredevils and the Royal Challengers Bangalore, two famously unsuccessful teams in the IPL, and for the ill-fated Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League.
Kevin Pietersen
Runs 5695 Ave 33.89 SR 136.89
Kevin Pietersen was the player of the tournament and leading run-scorer in England's 2010 T20 World Cup triumph, and that barely scratches the surface of his glittering career. He became a favourite at the Pakistan Super League thanks to his exploits with the Quetta Gladiators, who he helped reach the final in the first two seasons. A game where he smashed 39 off the last nine balls to complete the then-highest PSL run chase exemplified the abilities of his merciless hitting, which he would showcase around the world. He averaged 59 and 61 in the 2009 and 2012 IPL seasons, two of only a handful he played in their entirety. The Big Bash League saw him accumulate a further 1144 runs at a strike rate a shade under 140 with Melbourne Stars. He saved his career best for his country of birth, smashing 115 for the Dolphins in 2015, his second half-century coming off just 13 balls.

Glenn Maxwell v Suresh Raina

Glenn Maxwell
Runs 5983 Ave 27.57 SR 154.40
Wickets 95 Ave 31.14 ER 7.69
Explosive with the bat, handy with the ball and agile on the field, Maxwell is a compelling package in T20 cricket. His strike rate over 150 makes him an ever-present threat to the opposition whether batting in the top or middle order. Maxwell made a stunning start in the 2014 IPL, and was named the MVP as Kings XI Punjab made the final. All his three T20 hundreds have been for Australia - only Rohit Sharma has more in T20Is - and he's been prolific in internationals: an average of 35.02 paired with a strike rate of 160. He was handed Kings XI Punjab captaincy for the 2017 IPL - albeit without much success - before also leading the Melbourne Stars to successive BBL finals.
Suresh Raina
Runs 8392 Ave 32.65 SR 138.02
Wickets 53 Ave 34.60 ER 7.23
Suresh Raina built his T20 reputation as a mainstay at No. 3 for the Chennai Super Kings, with his run-scoring consistency making him a sure-shot in the team XI - he played a record 158 consecutive matches for the franchise. Three-time IPL and two-time Champions League T20 winner. When CSK was banned for two years, he took over the captaincy mantle at the Gujarat Lions. Raina played in India's first ever T20I, in 2006, but didn't make the 2007 T20 World Cup squad. He featured in the next five editions, scoring India's first T20I hundred in 2010. Usually a steady accumulator, there were moments when Raina could blitz opposition attacks, like against Kings XI Punjab in in 2013. And on turning tracks, he was a back-up bowling option relied upon by MS Dhoni.
