Live Report: Chennai Super Kings vs Mumbai Indians, Chennai

By Hemant Brar

CSK win by six wickets

Goyal had conceded only 19 from his three overs but Dube ruined his figures by smashing two sixes in his last. After a couple of quiet overs, Madhwal gets Conway lbw for 44 off 42.
Dhoni walks in with the crowd cheering him all the way. In the 18th over, Dube levels the score with a six and single off Arshad, and brings Dhoni on strike. The crowd cheers again. Dhoni hits the winning run, nonchalantly helping a short-of-good-length ball towards deep square leg for one.
The six-wicket win has lifted CSK to No. 2. Mumbai are still in the ten-point traffic jam in the middle.
That's all from my side for this game. Thanks for joining us. See you soon.

Stubbs gets Rayudu

Chawla and Goyal slowed down CSK a bit after the Rahane wicket; there was no boundary for 24 balls. Rayudu broke the shackles with a six off Stubbs but fell on the very next ball.
Dube walks in with Super Kings needing 35 runs in 43 balls.

Chawla strikes again

Rahane hit him for a six earlier in the over but Chawla bounced back to trap him lbw with a googly. Rahane was about to walk when Conway convinced him to review the decision. Three reds on the DRS and CSK lose the review as well.
Chawla now has 17 wickets this season, the joint-most for him in an IPL. In the inaugural season, he had finished with 17.

First sighting of Raghav Goyal

Rohit had mentioned at the toss that Raghav Goyal would be replacing Kumar Kartikeya. Goyal, the Impact Player, got his cap during the innings break, and has been introduced into the attack in the eighth over.
A left-arm wristspinner, Goyal's most balls in that over were in the high 80kps. Only one was under 80kph: a 78.3kph floater to Rahane. He conceded eight, and a leg-bye, in his first over in T20 cricket.

Chawla strikes with his first ball

Devon Conway hit two fours off Jofra Archer in the fourth over to already bring the asking rate under six. But Piyush Chawla, arguably Mumbai's best bowler this season, removes Gaikwad with his very first ball. It was a length ball that Gaikwad looked to pull but ended up skying it on the off side, of the toe end of the bat. Kishan settled under it.
Rahane walks in at No. 3.

Gaikwad tees off

Two fours off Green in the first over. Two sixes and two fours off Arshad Khan in the third. Gaikwad 29* off 14, 28 off those runs have come in boundaries. Devon Conway on 5 off five.
CSK 36 for no loss after three.

An excellent last over from Pathirana: five runs and two wickets. He finishes his spell with figures of 4-0-15-3. Sampath Bandarupalli tells me that 15 are the fewest runs conceded among the 35 instances of a bowler bowling his four overs during the last eight overs (13-20) of an IPL innings.
Mumbai have been restricted to 139. Should be an easy chase, right?

Pathirana yorks Wadhera; Deshpande sends back David

Wadhera shuffles outside off in an attempt to hit one towards the leg side. But Pathirana nails his yorker and pings the middle stump.
Tim David walks in with 15 balls left in the innings, and he departs with nine still left. Deshpande adds one more to his wicket tally as David mistimes one to long-off. Deshpande gets the purple cap with that, and he could have had Arshad Khan to on the next ball but Shivam Dube dropped a straightforward chance at long-on.

First six of the innings; first fifty for Wadhera

Nehal Wadhera, batting on 41 off 42, hits the first six of the day in the 16th over of the innings. He comes down the ground to Maheesh Theekshana and launches him over long-on. In the next over, Wadhera brings up his maiden T20 fifty. He picks up three more fours in that Jadeja over.
CSK, meanwhile, have replaced Theekshana with Ambati Rayudu, their Impact Player.

Malinga vs Pathirana

On the eve of this game, Ishan Kishan said having faced Lasith Malinga in MI nets would help the team play Matheesha Pathirana. "We've played [Lasith] Malinga in the nets when I came here in Mumbai Indians and that gives us a lot of confidence," he said. "He was a legend and we did practise well when he was bowling, so we will just look to watch the ball and play our own game."
As he had done this IPL so far, Dhoni brings him for the first time in the 13th over. He goes for just five in his first.

Jadeja gets Surya

Suryakumar Yadav and Nehal Wadhera had stabilised the innings after three early wickets, taking the side to 64 for 3 after ten overs. But Jadeja has dealt them a big, big blow. Suryakumar Yadav tried to cut him from in front of the stumps. But it was a quicker one, bowled at around 102kph. Suryakumar missed and Jadeja hit.

Have your say

Rohit Sharma in his last four innings: 0, 0, 3, 2. Recently, Sunil Gavaskar said Rohit "needs a little bit of a break" from the IPL. MI head coach Mark Boucher was asked what he made of Gavaskar's suggestion. Boucher said if Rohit himself came to him and said he needed a break, he would think about it.

MI 34 for 3 after powerplay

Suryakumar Yadav has quickly moved to 13, off just nine balls. Mumbai need a big knock from him today. He has three T20I hundreds but not even one in the IPL. #JustSaying

MI in tatters; another duck for Rohit

There are two ways of looking at Tushar Deshpande's record in IPL 2023. He is among the leading wicket-takers in the tournament but also has one of the worst economy rates. Here, he has removed Cameron Green in the second over the game. If you want to know more about Deshpande, S Sudarshanan traced his journey.
In the next over, Deepak Chahar dealt MI a double blow. Ishan Kishan gets a top edge as he looks to hit a length ball towards the shorter, leg-side boundary. Maheesh Theekshana settles under it.
Rohit Sharma had walked in at No. 3 but fell for a three-ball duck. MS Dhoni's captaincy might have had a hand in his dismissal. Just before the wicket ball, Dhoni had come up to the stumps. Rohit went for a scoop but the ball hit the outer part of the bat, the glove, and perhaps even the helmet, and ballooned towards backward point where Ravindra Jadeja made no mistake.
Nehal Wadhera, by the way, had come in at No. 4. It seems MI want to maintain the left-right combination in the middle to take advantage of the shorter square boundary. Suryakumar Yadav has just joined him in the middle.

Green opens with Kishan

Instead of Rohit Sharma, it's Cameron Green who has walked out with Ishan Kishan. Rohit hasn't had a great time with the bat this season, with Sunil Gavaskar even suggesting that the batter should take a break.
Well, Rohit has taken a break from opening the innings. He has padded up in the dugout and could come in at No. 3. Matt Roller tells me that it's the first time since 2018 that Rohit is not opening the innings for MI. This was that last time he didn't open:

CSK opt to bowl

MS Dhoni wins the toss and says with the rain around, he wants to bowl first. CSK have gone with an unchanged side.
Mumbai have made two changes. They have left out left-arm spinner Kumar Kartikeya as CSK have many left-handers in their batting unit. Raghav Goyal replaces him. Tilak Varma is "slightly injured", according to Rohit Sharma. Tristan Stubbs comes in for him.
Chennai Super Kings: 1 Devon Conway, 2 Ruturaj Gaikwad, 3 Ajinkya Rahane, 4 Shivam Dube, 5 Moeen Ali, 6 Ravindra Jadeja, 7 MS Dhoni (capt, wk), 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Maheesh Theekshana, 10 Matheesha Pathirana, 11 Tushar Deshpande
Substitutes: Ambati Rayudu, Mitchell Santner, Subhranshu Senapati, Shaik Rasheed, Akash Singh

Ground dimensions

This match is being played on one of the side pitches. One square boundary is 70 metres, the other just 61 metres. Down the ground, it's 73 metres. It's a bit overcast out there, but we have our fingers crossed.

The closest IPL ever

Around the halfway mark this season, Shiva Jayaraman did some calculations and found out this year has been the closest when it comes to the points table. AB de Villiers and Tom Moody share the same view.

MI have the wood on CSK at Chepauk

Not many teams can say that MI do have the wood on CSK at Chepauk. They have 6-2 win-loss record against CSK at Chepauk, and are on a six-match winning streak against CSK at the venue.
MI's recent form in IPL 2023 is also encouraging: they've won five of their last seven games. If they win here, they will be second on the points table.
Despite two losses and a no-result in their last three games, CSK are the joint-second on the points table. Playing at home, they will be eyeing a return to winning ways.
