George Balderson captained England U19 to the Rising Stars Tri-Series final in Antigua in December 2019, leading the team with 15 wickets. A top-order batter for Lancashire's Second XI, Balderson was mainly employed as a bowler for the Young Lions and was made captain by coach Jon Lewis in the summer of 2019.

Balderson was one of a number of young players to benefit from the opportunities presented by the Covid pandemic's disruption on the 2020 domestic season. Lancashire were without several first-team regulars due to call-ups to enlarged England squads, creating a chance for him to play all five games in the Bob Willis Trophy. They struggled as a team but Balderson made a maiden first-class fifty against Derbyshire at Liverpool and even opened the bowling late in the season, winning further opportunities the following summer.
