Uganda Men's Cricket Team History

Cricket arrived in Uganda through the British and thrived with Asian migration into the country. Indigenous Ugandans were exposed to the game in the country's elite schools and by the 1950s, a five-team tournament began to be played, between teams from different racial and religious groups.

In the space of ten years, between 1962 and 1972, Uganda gained independence and Asians began to be expelled under the dictatorship of Idi Amin, but the game was kept alive by locals, often in large, extended families. Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania formed an East Africa team in the late 1950s, became an ICC Associate in 1966, and played in the 1975 ODI World Cup. Two Ugandans were part of that outfit.

Uganda became an Associate Member of the ICC in 1998, played in the Intercontinental Cup in 2004 and 2005, and have moved mostly between Division Two and Three of the World Cricket League. In 2023, they beat Zimbabwe at the Africa Regional Qualifier in Windhoek to become the third national team in their country in any sport - after netball and rugby sevens - to qualify for a World Cup, the 2024 T20 tournament.
