Misbah, Akmal complete clinical win

287

Pakistan 189 for 3 (Misbah 72*, Akmal 77) beat Sri Lanka 188 (Sangakkara 71, Tharanga 57, Cheema 4-43) by six wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

Pakistan put one foot in the final of the Asia Cup with a six-wicket win over a tired Sri Lankan outfit, which did not have enough steam to defend a modest 188. Pakistan's bowlers set up the win with a disciplined effort, and Misbah-ul-Haq and Umar Akmal compiled positive half-centuries to arrest a top-order wobble. Their eagerly anticipated clash with India on Sunday may not carry much context for them if India beat Bangladesh tomorrow, but Sri Lanka's second consecutive defeat makes an India-Pakistan final likely.

The defeat left a few important questions for Sri Lanka to answer after a long, strenuous season away from home, where they have had mixed results. Their shot-selection for one, starting from the seniors at the top, has been exposed, leaving plenty for the lower middle-order to do. With Upul Tharanga scoring another half-century at No.6, it strengthens his case for being reinstated as an opener, meaning that Mahela Jayawardene would have to move back down the order.

The presence of Dilshan and Jayawardene at the top was aimed at giving Sri Lanka a strong start in a must-win game. They started aggressively today, but in their quest lost quick wickets. It was an underwhelming performance from a team that bats deep but did not have the application to match their talent.

Jayawardene fell trying to drive past extra cover. Dilshan, after some crunching drives through the off side, fell off a miscued pull. The wicket was nicely set up by Aizaz Cheema, who peppered him with short deliveries and challenged him to target the on side, with a fielder in the deep. Two more soft dismissals, those of the young Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne, put a lot of pressure on Kumar Sangakkara and Tharanga.

They suffered in the bowling Powerplay, scoring only 11 runs. Their stand of 96 featured several singles, 61 of them, and five boundaries. Tharanga was comfortable against the spinners, picking up boundaries through the off side via deft cuts. Sangakkara, who began with a clipped boundary past midwicket, pounced on a short delivery from Mohammad Hafeez to bring up the fifty stand.

Sri Lanka once again succumbed to a familiar weakness - the batting Powerplay. As it happened against India, they lost their foothold in the first over of the field restrictions. Saeed Ajmal was taken off after the bowling Powerplay but Misbah brought him back at the start of the 36th over. He struck by bowling Tharanga with the doosra, before inducing a poor shot from Farveez Maharoof. Sangakkara tried to force the pace by charging Cheema but ended up dragging the ball onto the stumps. His reaction after being dismissed, swishing the air with his bat, summed up Sri Lanka's problems.

Pakistan picked up the last six wickets for just 27 runs and it was largely due to Sri Lanka's inability to read Ajmal's doosra. Cheema went on to take four wickets while Ajmal took three. It was an especially satisfying display by Cheema, who got a pasting early on but backed himself to bowl fast and attack the batsmen.

A timid start by Pakistan, which included the loss of three wickets, gave Sri Lanka hope of defending a modest 188. Jayawardene, maintaining a stony expression, had plenty to expect from his beefed-up bowling attack, and they responded by trying to make life tough for the top order by bowling tight lines. Some committed ground fielding, especially by Dilshan, and catching lifted the spirits of the bowlers.

Jayawardene stuck to his tactic of constantly shuffling fielders in various close catching positions to create chances. The openers, Nasir Jamshed and Mohammad Hafeez, started watchfully but succumbed to tame dismissals, not very different in character to their counterparts. Jamshed holed out to mid-on before Hafeez scooped the legspinner Seekkuge Prasanna to point.

Younis Khan gifted Suranga Lakmal his second wicket with an exaggerated whip to Farveez Maharoof at mid-on, who timed his dive and caught the ball inches off the ground. At 33 for 3, Sri Lanka were in the game but three boundaries by Akmal off a Lasith Malinga over in the bowling Powerplay - all risk-free - calmed the nerves for Pakistan. Misbah was prepared to wait for the bad deliveries, driving Prasanna past the covers before launching him for a six over long-on.

The calmness of Misbah and exuberance of Akmal combined well to ensure that Pakistan crossed the finish line before the 40th over, which gained them a bonus point. Akmal was strong behind square on the on side, sweeping the spinners and paddling them away with the fine leg up. As the target shrunk, Sri Lanka appeared to throw in the towel. The fast bowlers failed to control the scoring, as Pakistan found the gaps with ease during the batting Powerplay.

Sri Lanka have a very slim chance of making the final, provided they beat Bangladesh convincingly, and India lose both their remaining games. A back-door entry, however, would not leave them satisfied.

Tendulkar's this 100 is sort of selfish game. As he played 99 hundreds for nation let this 100 be for him.Even upcoming young star kohli's strike rate in this game 80.48 where as sachi's 77.55 not much different.Batsman did it well. The problem is from bowling side. They don't know how to bowl in pressure situations.

@ Harmony 111: I can answer your question as to why SL haven't won their 2 games in this tournament. Quite simply they lost it themselves due to poor shot selection. The fact of the matter is India are FTB at the moment...when your so-called talented stars like Raina, Rohit Sharma, and 2 million dollar Jadeja score well away from India, then get back to me. Playing well in your home conditions doesn't justify a world beaters tag, just because you won the WC. I'll admit, India played well despite being at home, and fair play to you guys for winning. Anyone can play on a flat track because the ball doesn't do anything nasty and it's a batsman's paradise...hence the term 'flat'. To say that SL can't play on these pitches is absurd, when they have won plenty of games in the subcontinent. Likewise previous Indian teams have done quite well abroad, and I respect that. In the current situation, the Indian side doesn't look like doing well overseas, and I'm not saying Sri Lanka are masters OS.

Well played Pakistan. You guys outplayed us really well. Congrats. My compatriots, please let's accept that Pakistan was the better team on that day and India had nothing to do with that. For all the thrashing comments we receive from Indians/Aussies, they'll have their time. Yesterday Sachin's much expected ton went in vain. Aussies are in WI and who knows what might happen there. Yes we lost and let's hope a better come back next time. Can I please ask all the Sri Lankans who love thrashing the other teams to stop it and admire the beauty of the game? It doesn't matter what others say. We love our team as much as they love theirs.

@ Pavankumar Reddy: FYI, in the 20 matches Ajmal has played outside subcontinent, he has taken 33 wickets at an average of 21.66, economy rate of 4.31 and a strike rate of 30.1 wich is better than his subcontinent record.

  • Ammy_rd on March 16, 2012, 12:02 GMT

In domestic cricket, Asad Ali playing for SNGPL has got amazing figures as a bowler. Also, Yasir arafat needs to be given a longer run in the team as an all rounder. he has hardly bowled 30 overs in his 11 matches and has the domestic figures with both bat and bowl to deserve better! Fawad Alam and Afaq Raheem also deserve to get a chance! Selection should be done on merit. Nasir Jamshed's inclusion on merit is a good sign. Imran Ali from PIA and Tahir Mughal have also got outstanding bowling figures. Khalid Latif is also a contender to be considered for batting! Domestic records should be considered for selection.

@ProdigyB: Our bowlers don't need anyone to "sing" their praises. Secondly, they might be medium pacers by our standards, but Aizaz was still the fastest bowler of both sides during the England tour and Aizaz, Umar and Junaid were all faster than Anderson, Broad and company. I thought most Indians are sensible enough to NEVER even mention their bowlers and ours in the same sentence, and this has nothing to do with how our batsmen will make your bowlers look like the McGraths they are not. And sunday is not the real deal because we have made the final already. The final will be the real deal.

@onlyIndiathebest:its pathetic to see you comparing SL and bangladesh.Sl have proved over the years they are among the top sides in ODIs.Initially they were also poor and got to play against India and Pakistan only i believe. But how they have improved since 1996.and they got to play frequently against Aus,Eng etc only after improving......Bangladesh have also got numerous opportunities to improve themselves.but havent really done that.No doubt they have got some good individual talents but when it comes to collective effort they fail big time.......BTW i am an Indian n not a Lankan

  • csowmi7 on March 16, 2012, 9:01 GMT

@kevinsl I never said India are the best. In fact at the moment we are miles behind our best. The 8-0 drubbing was terrible. All I am saying is that Sri Lanka are living in a dream world thinking that they are masters of all conditions and gloating when they have not done anything substantial. Clearly at the moment South Africa with their pace attack and batting are the best.

I hate this league cricket saga......... International cricket is definitely suffering at the hands of this fancy dress cricket......... It has already been deprived of players like Gilchrist, Hayden etc. Recently Malinga has left test crick..... All because of IPL.... And now there is BPL... I think the day will come when all the big stars will only play in IPL, BPL, ???PL, ???PL, ??????PL etc........ and only the new comers will play test cricket and probably the whole international cricket only for the sake of being selected for any of these jokers leagues.... Oh... poor cricket.....

Misbaah has also been guilty of not allowing the 2nd seamer to settle down in the playing XI. continues chopping between Cheema-Junaid-Riaz does not help the younsters to settle down. Gul is given all the matches, even when they are playing minnows. Misbah should look at giving more opportunities to Cheema. Now that Junaid is injured, cheema is being played more consistently. But most importantly players like SADAF HUSSAIN & RAHAT ALI should be drafted into the team urgently, maybe rest Gul for a while.

@ Morfi: Great comment........... And guys please stop fighting....... Let`s stop considering thigs like FTB`s etc. I mean every team plays better cricket when playing in home conditions..... Moreover currently I dont find any team clearly dominating world cricket........ Its been that kind of competition among the the teams, so we must expect any team among the top 7 to beat each other on a given day . What I can best hope is the top level cricket in the 2 games between Pakistan and India........... Best of luck to both teams (But more to Pakistan) being a Pakistani.........

  • on March 16, 2012, 8:06 GMT

Misbah's captain's inning saved Pakistan from collapse. Finally the tide has turned in favor and bright future is certain to some degree. Cheema's initial two overs was a set back for Pakistan but he overcame to become the most succesful bowler in this ODI . Umar Akmal proved his worth , all he has to do is hit along the ground ,no lofty shots. WELL DONE, see you all in the finals.

It was a superb allround performance by Pakistan.Having bowled out Sri Lanka for paltry 188 runs, they reached the target with ease for the loss of 4 wickets.Umar Akmal played a pivotal role in Pakistan's victory. His fluent and masterly knock of 78 under pressure was crucial in Pakistan winning the match.Misbah also need to be praised for his patient and gallant knock which kept one end ensured and made sure nothing untoward would happen.

Pakistan's middle order batsman has shown some good batting last night but I don't think this is not enough to win against India in Final. No doubt, Pakistan has a good bowling attack.. If they have to win against India, top 3-4 batsman have to do good scores. Afridi needs to fire up too. he is a big match player.. Solid team effort is necessary..At this moment, India is hot favorite and going to win the title..

  • farooq61 on March 16, 2012, 6:33 GMT

First of all I would congratulate Pakistan for playing and winning the game against Sri Lanka without much contest. Hats off to our bowlers!

But I feel our batting department lacks tenacity, resolve and determination and in last couple of months has shown signs of brittleness and being shatterable lot.

Yesterday it was no different, our three top order batsmen were sent back to the dressing room for a meagre score of 33 runs.

Had Sri Lankans scored 50 additional runs, the turtle like (slow paced) scoring of Misbah and partners, Pakistan would the have been in thick soup and with a different result.

We have to focus much on our batting, so, BUCKUP Pakistan!!

  • onlyIndiathebest on March 16, 2012, 6:31 GMT

It is pathetic how two sides with basically the same talent SL and BAN play different number of games. BAN never get to play games with best oppositions where as SL always get to make up numbers for big sides in tournements. AUS IND and even PAK should be fair to BAN when considering a weak team for a tournament,

Nothings ok about misbah's issues. If younis and misbah play in the same team then the team cannot chase down 250+. Also undue pressure is put on younsters like haammad azam and asad shafiq because the team has to accomodate non-performing seniors like younis and misbah. today i thought it was unfair that azam had to come inplace of shafiq. actually azam should have come in plaace of younis.

  • Mfalme on March 16, 2012, 5:48 GMT

@endianuwagona- I don't know who you are. But read each of your comments and totally agree with you. Malinga I feel is not giving his 100%. His fielding is not up to international level. He should play only T20. With the introduction of 2 new balls he has become ineffective in one-day cric. Chandimal might fail to score a hundred in a match but will NOT fail to drop few sitters even a new born can take. If Seekuge Prasanna can I am sure any of the 20 m Lankan can play for SL. I am an admirer of SL team particularly their fielding. But after 1996 WC I have a feeling cricket in SL had been infiltrated with politics, partiality, favoritism etc. Pathetic.

I think people who criticise Umer Akmal onlybecause he is not from Karachi or he is brother of Kamran Akmal should be ashamed of themselves after his great inning which enabled Paksitan to win against Sri Lanka. The class of his batting shows he should be groomed to play shots agins selected balls only and not against every ball should be taught to him by some senior players like Misbah or younis.

every team has its ups and downs while touring. We saw Pakistan get whitewashed 3-0 the last 4 times they played against Australia and we know how Sri Lanka have not even won in WI and NZ and have not even won a single test in Aus in almost 10 test matches. India have won the most series and test matches touring out of the sub continent teams and are going through a bad patch. Sri Lanka talks as if it has mastered all conditions and have nothing more to prove. First concentrate on winning in West Indies and then we'll see.

  • csowmi7 on March 16, 2012, 3:32 GMT

@mahaanama. First of all its called touring not "home teams". And it seems stupid combining t20, ODI and tests. Going by your logic Australia won the Ashes 7-4 and Eng beat Pakistan 6-4. Sri Lanka have only won that ODI series in Aus. They have done nothing more outside the subcontinent. You have not won anything even touring NZ and WI. India have won tests in every country and have won series everywhere except SA and Aus where we have drawn something SL never did. Even Pakistan have won in Eng and the 1992 WC in Aus. Out of the three subcontinental teams SL have done the least in Test cricket. If you are going to take pride from a few rain affected draws in test cricket and a couple of dead rubbers then go ahead by all means. Take pride.

Each and every one of the comments by Pakistani fans is about dropping one or the other player.... before this match, it was Drop Misbah, then Drop Akmal, then Drop Asad, now we should drop Younis, and some even want to drop Hafeez orAfridi - guys, why dont you just DROP IT??? - Let the guys play. This very team, this very Younis and Misbah and Afridi have done wonders for Pakistan over the last year or 2 and brought stability to the side. Let them play for a while and back them for some time, please! Asad and everyone else have careers lined up in front of them... their time is there for the taking. But back your best players. They will come good. When Tendulkar or Ponting or Lara didnt perform, their people backed them to come good... Younis will too... So just drop the drop talk for a few months, please!!!

  • maddy20 on March 16, 2012, 1:23 GMT

@Mahaanama Flattrack bullies are those who have not yet won a single test match in Australia, India. They won their first ever test against SA recently where as India comfortably drew the series in SA. You know India is in what is known as a transition phase, something you are probably not aware of coz you have lost every series you have played since worldcup at both home and away. Deadrubbers may look good in terms of stats but they are nothing if you cannot back them up with trophies AKA the cupboard is empty. India on the other hand have won every series they have played in home conditions and have not conceded a test series to a visiting team since the past 9 years.

  • DilshanDeSilva on March 16, 2012, 1:15 GMT

As a Sri Lankan fan I didn't think I would ever say this, but I'm actually glad that we are going home early. I'd rather have the team fully fit for the test matches against England. BUT (before anyone jumps the gun) I'm not trying to cover up the loss. we really have to address our powerplay issues. We played very poor cricket in the tournament and don't deserve to be in the finals. And hey, now we get two India vs Pakistan games, which is great for world cricket.

  • praveen4honestremark on March 16, 2012, 1:14 GMT

In this Asia cup only team which is looking best is Pakistan Team but may loose Cup also but why? here is the reason :World class bowling . Batting is good too, i say it because when you see the talent the team is having it's hard to be beaten unless they give away their wicket by a rash shot, like how Afridi most often awards his wicket.Problem with Pakistan team is it lacks real fight when it comes to winning matches and gets down easily and are not gelled together as a team. And in Pakistan team is lacking counter attacking strategy and having no Partnerships. Bowling they can manage with world class bowlers, but what about batting? If they don't counter attack opposition bowlers will pounce on you and in that way you loose wickets and confidence. England won over Pakistan in UAE only because they counter attacked on Pakistan and for that Pakistan had no Answer. But there is sense of improvement yesterday when i saw Pakistan winning over Srilanka , but a very long way to ...

  • Mahaanama on March 16, 2012, 0:40 GMT

Congrats Pakistan! Again some talks about flat track bullies. Flat track bullies means teams who can't beat home teams at their home outside subcontinents.

Since WC final Sri Lanka have played 24 matches (in all formats) with home teams outside subcontinents . Out of those 24 matches home team beat SL in 12 matches(3 tests & 9 ODIs) and SL beat home team in 10 matches(1 test, 8 ODIs, 1 T20). 2 test matches were drawn.

Since WC final India have played 20 matches (in all formats) with home teams outside subcontinents. Out of those 20 matches home team beat India in 17 matches(8 tests,6 ODIs, 3 T20s) and India beat home team in only 2 matches(1 ODI, 1 T20). 1 ODI was tied.

Again would you believe this? "home teams have beat India in 17 MATCHES OUT OF LAST 20 MATCHES India played outside subcontinents"

So dear fans, on this earth do you still need any more evidence to prove who are real flat track bullies out of two world cup finalists ?

After losing 3 wickets at 33 ...stage was set for ideal innings from Misbah's TUK TUK and Umar Akmal's natural dashing innings. It was treat to watch Umar's innings with with more than 100 striking rate especially when he despatched 3 fours in one over off Malinga .. 152 runs partnership ensured Pakistan's berth in Final of Asia Cup after 12 years. I agree with Waqar Younas that Umar Akmal should bat at #3. Even today he played classic innings (under pressure) and at the best striking rate of the match 107. Those who used to condemn Umar Akmal....I will will suggest then to calm down and let this young man play his natural game...hardly any doubt that he is a great talent......Mueen ud din Hameed...TORONTO

  • on March 15, 2012, 22:24 GMT

@ AbAdvani Man, in 2005 we drew series against Eng by 1-1(in Eng). In 1996, we defeated them by 2-0 in England. Just that after Inzi and M Yosuf, Pak is lacking the share class but it wont be long that we will have some, unlike India whose graph is falling apart especially when their old horses are too old to carry any load.

  • Des_65 on March 15, 2012, 22:02 GMT

I think there should be more Asia Cup matches. Two against each team. 4C2 * 2 = 6*2 = 12. In CB Series, there were 12 matches before the final (4 against each team). Having 2 games against each team (instead of only one) will be fair enough to place the worthy teams (based on current form, of course) in the finals and will not increase the number of matches by too much.

  • on March 15, 2012, 21:51 GMT

How did a contest between Sri Lanka and Pakistan turn into a war of words between Indians and Lankans? What does it take to convince these rabid fans that there is no country in the world today that can be considered a truly dominant force in cricket although there are a couple of them in contention? By dominant I mean a country that has consistently been able to win on fast and flat tracks as well as in all formats of the game. So to all you partisan fans why don't you save your bragging rights for that day? Until then why not just enjoy the matches and take the good days with the bad?

Except for Ajmal none has been consistent. Gul shines once in a blue moon and the rest are medium pacers much like India's. Congrats on the win, but the real deal on Sunday. Bring it on. Go Blues.

  • cool2cool on March 15, 2012, 20:45 GMT

I'm certain that every Pakistani fan knows that we have a very thin batting order, the question is that does every fan recognize this fact. The answer is no. We Pakistani (like any other followers) will just not accept this fact. Having said that I still wish and hope that my team performers well against India. India without any doubt has a heavy batting line up, their weaker link is their bowling. I've always believed that India Pakistan game is always a 50/50. No skills, luck or any other factor decides the game BUT the NERVES. It's ALWAYS a pressure game, whichever team holds their nerves, will win. Best of luck to both the teams. PS: My fellow Pakistanis, no matter what let us be humble. That's what our religion teaches us. Peace out.

An as per your logic, India is much much better than SL as the have beaten them 3-1 (twice in Aus n once in Asia cup)... Looking at the strokes played by SL batsmen, they are preparing for IPL and not for tests...

  • cool2cool on March 15, 2012, 20:27 GMT

@nilankaraja: You are correct mate, SL play far better outside than India, hence SL have so far won 9 tests outside of SL(including BD and ZIM), not won a single test match in India and Australia. And was it India's mistake that SL is without their top players? And does it mean SL's bench strength is poor???

  • on March 15, 2012, 20:25 GMT

@Sarvesh.Pushpraj has a point, if india looses to both pak and bangladesh, and sri lanka wins against bangla or vice versa with bonus points, then india is out. But i just hope not! want to see India Pak Finals! Wished if tht was the world cup finals too, no matter what would have been the result, would have been more fun than india sri WC finals.. I got more respect for Pak Team as they defeated the no1 test team who were on cloud9 at that moment. I wish luck to them for the finals and as a indian fan, hoping to reach finals at the moment lol..

TEAM PAKISTAN played well today against SRI LANKA in the ASIA CUP but still batting is a concern. Perhaps it is time to drop Yunus Khan from ODI team. If Australia can drop Ricky Ponting from their ODI team I see no reason why same should not happen to Yunus Khan. Hafeez may also have to be dropped eventually if his batting continues to disappoint and remains inconsistent particularly against quality bowlers. Whilst he is a handy all rounder but he is in the team primarily as an opening batsman. As India's batting is the BEST of all Asian teams I would want TEAM PAKISTAN to include Wahab Riaz in the XI at the expense Of Hammad Azam as it is unlikely Cheema will be dropped. My XI for ODI match against India would be: 1. Hafeez, 2. Jamshed, 3. Azhar, 4. Misbah, 5. Umar, 6. Afridi, 7. Sarfraz, 8. Wahab, 9. Gul, 10. Ajmal, 11. Cheema.

Its been always a pleasure to watch Ind vs Pak matches unlike the SL matches....I have a dream, what if Indian batting and Pak bowling combined would look like.....it would be the #1 team in the world..(Not meant to hurt anybody)

All you managed was a tie and one loss and one downright embarrassing thrashing. I suggest you take a hard look at yourselves before you comment on an Indian side that's not even as good as it used to be.

Here's the problem of SL Batting. they want to score 100 in the first fifteen over. then they want to score more then 50 in the power play (in Both session, they fail bad and then they get all-out before 50 over.) Here's they should do: Have 100 in first 20 over, with kumar and Mahela, They can get alteast 80 runs in the next 15 over with wide field. Batting power-play, don't mind it and score just between 30-40. that leave them a score of at least 220 at the end of 40 over. and with last 10 over (70 runs in 60 bowls). score of 290 is very much possible with this team easily.

However, I admit pakistan as a talented team and a good blood of youth in it. India has some problems but still they remain to be one of the most promising team which has the ability. Wd love to watch the match on sunday and the finals.

Younis must be dropped for the rest of the tournament & bring back Asad or Azhar. Now watch Hafeez & UAkmal aren't gonna do anything with the bat for next few innings, since they've scored 50s in the past two games..... That's one of the main issue causing Pakistani batting to fail in most of the games....

Well as a Sri Lankan I seriously don't understand why my fellow countrymen have to criticize the Indian players. To be fair, they have played excellent and much better cricket than SL. Pakistan really played well today too to beat us and they deserve the victory and all I hope is that the two best teams go through to the final and that is India and Pakistan. SL certainly have many problems to solve. For one thing, they make it to the final and lose it every time and are very inconsistent. Its really nice to see SL win but when we lose accept it guys without bashing other teams, please. Accept the fact that the opposition was much better. Now, all I want is a really close Ind V Pak final and hopefully we don't lose to B'desh.

After all, what does it matter if under this man's leadership Pakistan did not lose a series (Test or ODI) for a whole year, and whitewashed world's no. 1 test side! All that matters is that Pakistan lost the ODI and T20 series against England - right? For you, my dear Chethan Puttaiah: I would not like to bring Economics and Politics into a forum devoted to cricket, otherwise I could speak volumes on the rampant and abject poverty in "world's 3rd largest economy". And for the record, I also disagree with the idea of equating population with success in a PARTICULAR sport. But please, do not draw comparisons with China. How many medals did China win in the last Olympics as compared to India? Having said that, as a Pakistani I also do not feel any pride when I look at my own country's performance in sports in an OVERALL CONTEXT. But at least I do not live in a world or fantasy!

  • IshaqMalik on March 15, 2012, 17:38 GMT

Congrats Pakistan. Bettler luck next time SL. lets hope to see a hard fought game between Pakistan/India. both pakistani/indian fans, please let it stay a sport and don't make it a war, both teams have their strengths and weaknesses, lets show some sportsman spirit.

  • cool2cool on March 15, 2012, 17:37 GMT

@ Farooq Usman: India leads 7-0 against PAK in WCs (5-0 in 50-50, 2-0 in T20), so india has 100 % record...

  • on March 15, 2012, 17:35 GMT

finally Umer Akmal does what he is in the team for. He must perform consistently if he wants to stay longer. Best of luck Pakistan for the showdown on sunday!

  • AbAdvani on March 15, 2012, 17:35 GMT

Farooq Dude -when has Pakistan won in England ? Stop living in the past -Beating England in dusty bowls of Sharjah is one thing and beating them in their own backyard is another thing -there is not one batsman in the Pakistan team who has the technique to combat swing in England, so get real and stop living in the past.

  • csowmi7 on March 15, 2012, 17:32 GMT

I think it be unwise for the Pakistan cricket fans to underestimate the Indian bowling attack just like it would be unwise to underestimate the Pakistan batting. Pakistan are the only major country to not face Ashwin as they have not played in the IPL. He can be a good bowler in Indian conditions but he has a lot to prove against the world class Ajmal. Irfan is also bowling well.

  • Vilander on March 15, 2012, 17:30 GMT

@ SAM Unagola , read my response. Having 1.12 billion people is not an advantage its a disadvantage. Because any international team can only have 14 international cricketers at one time, because of this if the country is very big then the penetration of international cricketers is much lesser and so is the effectiveness of domestic leagues. The only benefit that India achieve out of being big is the ability to have multiple good teams at the same time. India can create some 10 teams that play at 80-90 % of their international teams ability, the same wont be possible for Aus or SL probably only ENG can do the same to a lesser extent because of their 60 million pop. Besides why do you hate india , without india you wont have a cricket team to boast of.

  • KingOwl on March 15, 2012, 17:24 GMT

As a SL fan, I must say that I am rather relieved that SL will end up going back early. And I know that many SL fans share this. I would be surprised if the team didn't think the same way too! This is a useless tournament. The real test is in a couple of weeks - the test series against England. SL have nothing to prove in one day cricket - they just beat the #1 side Australia in Aus 4-3. They should focus on the up coming test series, rather than playing in a tournament which nobody cares about right now.

  • muski on March 15, 2012, 17:21 GMT

Oh Sanga Sanga- You said India were poor travellers and you get whipped by the big boysl in your own backyard. Oh I pity you Lankan Lions. You only flatter to deceive.I think Mahela and Dilshan are warming up for T20 IPL rather than playing 50 over cricket. They go hammer and tongs and then go off in a jiffy. The rest follow them in a hurry. You have got an early ticket back to Colombo. Relax well before the Aussie boys arrive and give them a sound thrashing. Keep the Sub Continental flags flying though.

  • samincolumbia on March 15, 2012, 17:21 GMT

Yet another 'narrow' loss for SL - 6 wickets and 10 overs to spare!! 188 runs on a flat pitch...all's well!!

  • on March 15, 2012, 17:20 GMT

Srilanka are a minnow team . They have lost 11 consecutive series(test and odi). SL can't beat India anywhere. There fans are like Bangladesh fans.

SL = new Bangladesh. They have lost 11 consecutive series(test and odi)

  • Harmony111 on March 15, 2012, 17:18 GMT

    @supadupamonk:-

Exactly. Anyone can go back and see my own comments praising SL for their performance in the first final and the chase in the 2nd final. Fact is, most Indian fans are true sport lovers and will appreciate anything good, whether from India or SL or Pak. I had admired Bell's batting in the Eng tour too. But smost of these other nation fans are complete zealots and will keep shouting in very negative tones about India's performances. I did not hear anyone saying that Dilshand and Sanga are selfish players after SL had lost even though they scored 100s yet this is said for SRT. There was just one positive comment about India's record chase in Hobart from the SL fans, all others were like oh yeah it came on a flat wicket and small ground. Their own Jaya, Sanga and Sanath have been pure FTBs but they wont see that, for them Indian players are FTBs. Neither are Clarke or Watto or Warner FTBs for them. Is this not double standard?

  • cool2cool on March 15, 2012, 17:14 GMT

@lionspaw: and therefore always come second, does't win in Sl and out of SL...

  • criclover112 on March 15, 2012, 17:14 GMT

This tournament is meaningless. Only reason it is being held is so that tendulkar could get his 100 hundred on a flat wicket against bangladesh. Anyway, good victory by Pakistan.

  • on March 15, 2012, 17:14 GMT

i think pak played far better than the sri lankans but u you cant say that they r not a good side nd pak will INSHALLAH win against india on sunday nd in the final is well if they reached the final

  • chilled_avenger on March 15, 2012, 17:14 GMT

Its amazing how SL fans keep calling Indian batsman like Sachin or Dravid(who both average 50+ in Overseas tests) Flat-track bullies when their own batsmen like Mahela,Dilshan and to a lesser extent,Sangakkara have poor Batting averages outside the Subcontinent in the range of 30 to 40! Just last year Mahela averaged 17.16 in England Series and 22.00 in South Africa Series while Sangakkara averaged 30.66 in England Series and 30.00 in South Africa Series! And why are SL fans overrating their dead-rubber victories against South Africa(who were missing 3 first choice players) and celebrating for making it to the CB series Final while they conveniently avoid mentioning losing to Australia by 2-3 in Home Series last year! Even in Asia Cup & CB Series SL fans are complaining that they were missing key players but when they defeated SA in two ODIs,SA also were missing three first choice players! So,please refrain from making such claims...............

  • ExplicitPlatinum on March 15, 2012, 17:05 GMT

Well done Pak! Misbah is in the form that we all want him to be, the spine of Pak's batting line-up but hitting boundaries and the occasional six. Since Whatmore is the coach, we don't have to worry about Afridi being captain by telling Misbah to play like this in this match. Umar Akmal played really well along with Cheema but I'm not sure if our pace attack will tear up India. Gul bowled really tight but Hafeez is still a problem. I'm not sure if Misbah would send Wahab to bowl or Cheema to bowl but I think that Misbah should do what he feels like doing.

few things should be cleared here...tiredness should not be an excuse to any match ( india n sl continuously playing after wc-while pak getting 2 months rest in jun-july ' 11 )....afterall all these teams are professional...secondly if someone is taking asia cup not seriously, how come hes wasting his time to comment here !! ( i still think there should be more league matches for each team-atleast 2 against every opponent ) ... i think its not healthy to criticize the opponents just for the sake of criticism..we should try to find the problems of our own teams..being a pakistani, i was sure that pak will loose today ( keeping in mind their recent form ) but sl gifted this match to pak...being a pakistani i also know that india is a better team than us but its not the quality of a bowler/batsman that stands out between india-pak match, its the adrenaline that makes these matches interesting...n m hoping to see 2 crunch matches between them-may the best team wins !!

  • lakshitha.jayakody on March 15, 2012, 16:58 GMT

Sri Lanka has to really improve on consistency, especially in batting department. By the way this is unbelievable. Their outstanding performance in CB series has completely whitewashed here in sub continent [Sri Lanka would have won the CB cup easily, if their batting was consistent in the 3rd final]. Lack of anchoring innings, lack of strong partnerships, unnecessarily hasty batting style & the absence of proper match winners are some of the key areas Sri Lanka has to focus & develop. And also Sri Lanka has attend in to proper gaming plans & cunning strategies which exist during Ranatunga era. Perfect example is, after more than 03 years; Sri Lanka still struggle against Dhoni, Kholi, Gambhir thrice attack. In fact which cost us a World cup!!!

  • on March 15, 2012, 16:47 GMT

Being A Pakistani, I am very Proud of the way PAKISTAN PERFORMED TODAY, but i am not sure whether they can win against India or not, i am really surprised with the way Sri Lanka performed today, like everyone, i also predicted SL & IND as one of the team to win A.CUP, nevertheless Pakistani team didn't failed to surprised me today with there All Round performance, but i can say in clear words, that atleast Pakistan aren't looking too strong to beat Ind and win the cup, if Pak loses the tournament, i'll not surprise, coz my team's batting is below par than even a Bangladesh, if we win, it'll be only coz of our Bowling, if Bowling fails, Pak will lose for sure, unless some miracle happens. I just hope i am wrong, but given the recent Batting display by Pak, it's fact, our Bowling must click in the finals, otherwise it'll be India who is currently looking favorites.

  • on March 15, 2012, 16:47 GMT

188 was never going to be a threatening target for a team like Pakistan and Sri Lanka did well in their approach to the second inning. I don't think Sri Lanka should be disappointed in their performance in the Asia Cup, be cause what they lack right now is focus on the game most probably due to the amount of matches that they have played during this month. But they should be disappointed with young middle order couple who did well in CB series ....

It's been long time both countries played each other. I am feeling very down and sad, that i can't see any series between India and Pakistan except for some tournaments where many times are Involved like this Asia cup or in ICC events like World cup. I would love to see Pakistan and India play at least on Neutral venues. Please PCB and BCCI , think on it. People will travel countries to watch this, so don't worry about your pockets, please act fast :(.- From an Indian fan

Guyz, I have great respect for PAK & SL teams. SL is a classy team no doubt, what with some all time greats like Sanga (huge respect for this guy, should be KNIGHTED!! IMO) , Mahela & Dilshan. PAK had a good run with some great players, but look at them they are most entertaining, unexpected & spring surprises like no other in the world everytime they take field. They have huge & continuous repetoire of fast bowling talent, which is only matched by down-unders or Saffas. Every team has their strengths and weaknesses. Indians may be FTB's but they are best in these tracks and they just only have to improve their record abroad, which will happen some time. Anywayz point, enjoy each other's game, enjoy/imbibe the good things, support your team, support your friends/family. Above all just enjoy cricket. It's a great game. PROUD of RD & LAX & life long indebted to SACHIN for THE 2003 WC match, just that one match. I am PROUD to be an INDIAN. Cheers to all SL & PAK fans!!

Pakistan needs to bring Razzak back as a opener with Hafeez and keep Hammad Azam and Afridi at low order, also Azhar Ali should be tried for Younis Khan but i don't know if i wanna see Younis go. If he does it will the end of him which is very sad considering he is fitter than some teenagers in the team.

Dissapointed and gutted today. Pakistan are playing some good cricket and deserved the win today. SL's plans backfired today. Fatigue and injuries is obviously the biggest cause for another dissapointing loss. Their batting collapsed again. I still feel that Mahela and Dilshan are in form, but got out while trying to attack. Nice to see Tharanga and Sanga batting well in the past few matches, including this one.Chandimal and Thirrimane were dissapointing, but again I feel that they need some rest, they've played too mush cricket. Chandimal and thirumane, both are good batsmen and am sure they'll pick up and come back to their best. The major problem is their batting line up, they may have to re-shuffle it. Tharanga should come up and Dilshan should takke tharanga's present position.Tharanga is a bit more solid Sangakarra could also exchange with Chandimal for more solidarity in the middle order. Well India and Pakistan seem set for the finals. Will be interesting.Looks like a Pak win!!

  • cool2cool on March 15, 2012, 16:07 GMT

  • on March 15, 2012, 16:05 GMT

To the Sri Lankan fans: Tough luck. Accept your defeat. Fact is India ousted Sri Lanka in both Aus as well as Bangladesh. Other than bouts of brilliance, SL was never a champion team. We may be fast track bullies, but between the two of us, we are definitely the better side.

To Pak fans: As an Indian supporter, I'm so happy to see matches between India and Pak. Now we can have a friendly match before the finals. If India were not in the finals, I would've supported you guys. Anyway, good luck for the upcoming matches. :)

I expect more sportsmanship and maturity from Indian commentors generally on this thread. The Sri Lankan and Pakistani fans are so suave and upbeat, praising good cricket, and here come the Indian fans bashing everyone else and showing off like children. Sigh, guys, I love the Indian cricket team, but the small set of your fans who populate these threads leave a really bad taste for fans from many other countries who are having mature discussions about cricket.

One mor pathetic performance by Younis Khan. Younis is a great Test batsman, maybe one of the best pakistan has produced. But just not meant for limited overs cricket. Some how Misbah has justified his selection today. But if this had been a bigger run chase like 250+ , then even he would have faultered. Umar Akmal showed a rare maturity today. He should maintain it. THE REVELATION WAS CHEEMA, his man of the match will give him confidence.

INDIA CAN PLAY ON FLAT TRACKS ONLY. PAKISTAN HAS WON IN ENGLAND IN A SITUATION THAT EVERY ONE KNOWS AND ON THE OTHER HAND INDIA WAS WHITEWASHED IN BOTH TEST AND ONE DAYERS EVEN AFTER WINNING THE WORLD CUP.PAKISTAN IS BETTER AND HAVE MORE THAN 55% WINS AGAINST INDIA.

  • rahulcricket007 on March 15, 2012, 15:29 GMT

@KEVINSL . CAN YOU PLEASE REMIND ME THAT EXCPET FROM WINNING ASIA CUP 4 TIMES & WC IN SUBCONTINENT IN 1996 WHAT SPECIAL SL HAS DONE ? HAVE THEY EVER WON TEST SERIES IN NZ , WI , ENG WHERE BOTH INDIA & PAK HAVE WON IN PAST . HAVE YOU EVER WON A TEST IN AUS WHERE PAK & INDIA BOTH HAVE WON SEVERAL TESTS .HAVE YOU EVER WON T20 WC WHICH BOTH PAK &INDIA WON IN 2007 & 2009 . YOU PLAYED WELL IN CB SERIES YET YOU WERE ENDING ON LOSING SIDE IN FINALS .SOME CRICKET EXPERTS SAYS SL ARE GREAT TEAM BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS SHOWS FIGHT BACK . MY POINT IS WHAT IS THE RESULT OF SO CALLED FIGHTBACK WHEN YOU ALWAYS FINISH SECOND BEST . INDIAN TEAM SHOWED FIGHTBACK IN 2008 CB SERIES & COMFORTABLY WON IT BY 2-0 . THIS IS CALLED REAL FIGHTBACK WHICH WILL LEAD YOU TO VICTORY NOT THE FIGHTBACK WHICH ONLY SHORTEN THE LOSING MARGIN LIKE THE FIRST FINAL OF CB SERIES .

  • on March 15, 2012, 15:29 GMT

Just a scenario. What if Indian is beaten by Pakistan as SL did today, i.e. with margin. And Bangladesh beats SL or India. BD would be in the final. I hope BD wins the next match to keep the tournament alive fro rest of the matches.

  • ILaughAtThee on March 15, 2012, 15:26 GMT

Wow! Sri Lanka fans are already out with excuses - "Good SL lost early. We get time to prepare for England series". When other teams blame fatigue for poor performance, where are you guys hiding? Anyways, good luck with the England series. Well played Pakistan! You look like you are going to be the Champs this time.

  • BowledYa on March 15, 2012, 15:25 GMT

Pakistan wins! Where are those Misbah critics now? Another fine example of how Misbah's calm approach is critical to what is otherwise a fickle (although talented) team. He has helped Pakistan tremendously. Without his help Umar would not have scored half century today. Go Misbah! We are with you, buddy. On to India now.

  • sweetspot on March 15, 2012, 15:23 GMT

Well played Pakistan! SL, tough luck. This was some below par cricket by both sides.

Flat track or not, India has not been bullied by SL in a long, long time. So, better for SL fans to wonder where they can bully anybody. Maybe Bangladesh a little bit? We'll wait for that and hope SL can take some inspiration for the England series.

  • on March 15, 2012, 15:18 GMT

Good to see the arrogant SL captain lose. He has no choice now, but to hope for favors being handed down by India.

He had arrogantly said before their last league match with Australia (CB Series) that they dont have to depend on favors from others. That coming from a captain that had lost badly (8.75 RR against them) was a bit too audacious, even by Sri Lankan standards.

They have been shown their place now.

Give a walkover to Bangladesh and get the team back. Atleast they can rest and try to be competitive with England. At this rate Bangladesh will also beat SL and they will be too exhausted to play England who will eventually steam roll them.

  • endianuwagona on March 15, 2012, 15:09 GMT

The curse of dropping a hardworking bowler like Rangana Herath from the Asia Cup had hit Sri Lanka squarely in the face. Not using bowlers like Dhammika Prasad and Welagedara and always depending on people like Malinga is also not doing any good for SL. They are an average side. Not dependable and play HOT and COLD. Sri Lanka will never ever become a professional cricketing nation. The biggest thing that the SL board will now do is probably terminate the contract of Graham Ford. There is also a doubt if Malinga is deliberately underperforming to get dropped and play continuously in the IPL. After all the Board spent millions on recovering him from a serious back injury only for him to retire from Tests to play IPL. Now with England and other sides due to play SL, maybe he is worried about the IPL. Good Luck SL Cricket.

  • wnwn on March 15, 2012, 14:50 GMT

I think that Dav Whatmore needs to realise that Younis Khan is a poor limited overs player and replace him. He has an ODI average of 32 batting at 3 or 4 most of the time which cannot be considered good. Azhar Ali should be given a chance to cement his place at number 3 in ODI's.

  • on March 15, 2012, 14:49 GMT

Why this needless chatter on which team is better... everyone goes through a phase and every team has their strengths. No team has dominated world cricket like the WI or Australia and that is also a thing of past! So relax all fans here.. chill and enjoy the game!

  • on March 15, 2012, 14:35 GMT

@Sam Unagolla--- Your argument doesn't make any sense to me. If performance is based on population then Chinese with 1.3 billion people would have been No.1 football team in the world and not Spain with mere 46 million people. Please don't bring in illogical arguments to cover up dismal performances of your team. And for your information 1.2 billion Indians are not only playing Cricket or not only in sports, look at our developments in other areas and for your information we are the 3rd largest economy in the world. For us cricket is not life but it is part of our life.

@mayan...If Pakistan are the most boring team...than Mr.Mayan should stop watching cricket..Really!!! i mean Pakistan in my opinion is the most entertaining team out there, with some quality players, and the element of unpredictability. As far as the outfit goes it is not bad, obviously it not of the standards of the 99 WC but finish second to it. Moral of the story..new players are better off than your star players who play for their records..excluding DRAVID!!

  • Harmony111 on March 15, 2012, 13:01 GMT

@ham1990:- India IS a far superior team than any here and many other teams. And if scoring runs in these flat wickets is that easy then why is SL 188 AO and Pakistan struggling to chase even that paltry total? The blind Lankan and Pakistani fans will have no answer to this. They will mumble something like FTB and run for cover. And if India's WC win doesn't mean much since it came at home then how come Oz winning the CB series means much? Again they will have no answer to this. And whether India are able to dominate all over like Oz/WI is no reflection of their current superiority, it will only mean they are not as consistent and supreme as the WI/Oz teams.

  • ham1990 on March 15, 2012, 12:57 GMT

@KEVINSL I am actually a SL supporter. However, I'm astonished as to why so many SL fans are paying out India when our own team constantly throws away dominant positions only to lose the game comfortably. (Don't get me wrong, I was over the moon when we elbowed them out of finals contention in Australia) Additionally, I have no idea why you criticised my comment, which if you read it again, agrees with the 'flat track bullies' tag for India. Let's be fair though...after so many SL fans 'bashed' Indian fans during the CB series, they have every right to criticise the way Sri Lanka have played in this tournament. In my view, the reason why we don't win more series/tournaments is complacency/overconfidence. Here's hoping for a Pakistan victory!

  • on March 15, 2012, 12:52 GMT

@KEVINSL WHY YOU GUYS RATE SO LOW ON PLAYING WELL IN SUBCONTINENT TRACKS, YES IF INDIA IS A FTB IT MAY BE WE ARE ALL PROUD OF WHAT THEY HAVE DONE,SINCE 1987 WHEN IMRAN PAK BEAT INDIA 1-0 IN INDIA TILL 2012 THAT IS 25 YEARS THEY HAVE CONCEEDED 2 TEST SERIES 1 AGST SA IN 2000 AND OTHER AGST AUS IN 2004,IF WE COMPARE TO PAK AND SL THEY ALWAYS LOST HOME SERIES EVERY YEAR EVEN THOUGH PAK IS NOT PLAYING AT HOME SINCE LAST 4 YEAR BUT BEFORE THAT THEY LOST EVERY TEAM AT HOME EVEN ZIMBABWE HAVE BEATEN THEM 1-0 IN 1998 AT THEIR OWN DEN,WEREAS BANGLADESH NEARLY PULLED OF VICTORY IN MULTAN IN 2004 BEFORE INZY CENTURY AND UNBEATEN 6O RUNS LAST WICKET STAND SAVE THEM CERTAIN DEFEAT AGST MINNOWS OF WORLD CRICKET ,ABOUT GREG CHAPPEL COMMENTS HE IS THE WORST COACH INDIA HAD IN THEIR HISTORY I DONT KNOW WHAT HE ACHIEVED DURING HIS TENURE HE LITERRALY SPOILS INDIAN CRICKET DURING HIS REIGN,WHATEVER MAY BE INDIA HAD ACHIEVED MUCH MORE THAN WHAT PAK AND SL HAVE GOT.WI AND AUS R ONLY DONE BETTER THAN IND

  • Harmony111 on March 15, 2012, 12:52 GMT

    @KEVINSL:-

If you think this Asia Cup is getting any major interest in India then you are completely wrong. Proof is the drastic drop in the comments in the articles on Cricinfo. India is the most tired team of all 4 here btw and the Indian fan too is the most fatigued here. That is not the point btw. Btw, was the last Asia Cup boring too? We defeated you there and that was played IN Sri Lanka so SL had all the home advantage. Was the WC final boring too? Were the league matches of the CB series boring too? We were 2-1 there. How many more places where Sri Lanka find it boring to play? You would give this excuse each timeyour team gets thrashed and each time you win somehow then you would say SL were playing to win, they have the hunger and what not......yours is a very see through argument.

  • sanjivcena1 on March 15, 2012, 12:41 GMT

  • on March 15, 2012, 12:35 GMT

The way this match is going at the moment with Pakistan 20-0 chasing 188 its all seem to be India vs Pakistan final f unless and untill something miracles do happened .Srilanka after their impressive CB seires in Australia are playing like a minnows Their Bowlers were blasted by Indian Batsmans and their batters sneak against quality Pakistani bowling line up and in India s game they drop some crucial catches too.Sri lanka at the moment are most inconsistent side

  • Harmony111 on March 15, 2012, 12:34 GMT

I chuckle at the reasoning of the Lankans. India were 2-1 against them in the CB Series and it should have been 3-1. Till the last league match India and SL both could make to the finals and yet the Lankas keep using the word "Kicked India Out" or "Dominated against India in Oz" as if they had beaten us 4-0. Weird thinking. And for the record, I want to remind the Lankans that India have beaten SL in India to win the WC, in SL to win the last Asia Cup, have a dominating record in the last 2 CB Series in Oz. I am not even adding the 2 massive WC thrashings we gave to you in '03 and 99. In short, we have beaten and thrashed the Lankans on all surfaces, not just on the so called flat tracks. And the Lankan fans still like a parrot keep using the same line again and again. They know they have no other defense. Alright answer me this simple thing, why was your team not able to chase 304 few days back? And why is your team 188 AO today? Seems SL can't even bat on flat tracks. Shame Shame.

  • CandidIndian on March 15, 2012, 12:33 GMT

Indians flat track bullies?in last 10 years India has drawn test series in Aus 2004, Won in Eng 2007 and 1-1 against SA last year , apart from that they have won series in WI and NZ,while SL has not won test series outside subcontinent EVER!,They have not won single test in Australia and India EVER! They have lost every series after World cup, if we are flat track bullies based on two bad series, then what is SL with such a poor record.First win a series outside subcontinent, win a test in India ,win a series against Aus which you guys have not done even at home, then talk about India.Pakistanis are our arch rivals but they have better test and ODI record than us, so if they comment on Indian cricket it makes sense not SL fans.SL are real flat track bullies who have not won single test series outside subcontinent, they cannot win tests on bouncy tracks(Aus),or flat tracks(India) ,such a poor team overall.

  • on March 15, 2012, 12:26 GMT

Cant see them collapsing like this. moreover ; it scares me to the depth that waht after the terrific trio n malinga retire? dont wanna think about it. I cant see any batsman of mahela -sanga -dilshans calibre in SLs line up ; mathews and chandimal may be but nt sure. Plus who will lead SL once these three retire? Mathews doesnt appear like a leader material one

@Sam Unagolla- Buddy!! Stop making Population an excuse for poor performance of Srilanka. Here's a fact In 2005 Srilankans Outnumbered the Australians. Currently difference b/w the 2 is approx 2 Mil. Countries like Portugal, Czech, NZ, Sweden, Switzerland etc are much more competitive than the Lankans in numerous Aspects. Now just think what is Common among the mentioned. Anyhow if We Indians are ridiculous in sports that don't mean one should stop criticizing urs performance.

  • endianuwagona on March 15, 2012, 11:58 GMT

To the guys who want Mahroof out of the team, please remember this. Until Mahela is captain, the following will always play. 1. Mahroof 2. Tharanga 3. Malinga 4. Mendis (when he is fit) 5. Kapugedara. Remember these jokers were playing when Mahela stepped down from the captaincy. Then they were not to be seen. The reason Mahela had to step down was because he dropped important up and coming players to play these clowns. Finally they did not perform beyond 0, 1 runs and 0-60, 0-74 bowling. So shut up and watch the television as you will see these ugly faces until Mahela is captain. Remember how world class leggies like Malinga Bandara and also Suraj Randiv and Rangana Herath were dropped. Can you remember how Marvan was not given a single match in the 2007 World cup. Who was in charge? Asantha (Hedging) De Mel and Mahela.

@Harmony111 That's a fair enough comment. India are far superior than any of these other teams on these wickets, and SL have not formulated a plan to bat through the powerplay overs...it's pathetic. Sri Lanka are just an up and down team, and the recent CB series was an up for them. However, it still remains to be seen if India can dominate around the world...hence the 'flat track bullies' phrase so often thrown around. I hope I'm proven wrong soon enough, and people like Raina step up overseas.

  • on March 15, 2012, 10:01 GMT

HARMONY111, you need to stop hating Sri Lanka. Just because our cricket team got your team kicked out of the CB series, does not give you the right to hate us (the CB series is just a silly Australian Series, and it wasn't even that important). Besides every team has bad patches and bad days. India should have a much better cricket team than Sri Lanka, because there are 1.2 billion Indians, and only 20 million Sri Lankans (there are 20 million Indians in Mumbai alone...). But it isn't so. The Indian batting side is marginally better than the Sri Lankan batting side, but then again, the Indian batting should be much, much better, because there are 1.2 billion Indians. The Indian bowling side, on the other hand, is one of the weakest test playing bowling sides. Even in the IPL, Sri Lankan players are in demand, because they are good. That works against Sri Lanka when they play against India, because the Indians are too familiar with our players.

If Younus fails to perform again he should be replaced by Asad Shafiq. Is Younus playing just a good innings after failing twice on average deliberately to show his displeasure at the captaincy of Misbah?
