Tendulkar back in ODI squad

ESPNcricinfo staff

Sachin Tendulkar has been picked in India's limited-overs squad for the first time since the World Cup. He will stay on after the Test series in Australia for the one-day tri-series that also features Sri Lanka. Praveen Kumar, the India medium-pacer who missed the Tests due to a fractured rib, is also a part of the 17-man limited-overs squad. India will play two Twenty20 internationals in Australia followed by the ODI tri-series, which will be played from February 5 to March 8.

The rest of the limited-overs squad is similar to the one that was picked for the fourth and fifth ODIs against West Indies at home in December last year. Irfan Pathan, who played his first international for India in more than two years during that series, has retained his place in the squad. Zaheer Khan, who like Tendulkar has not played an ODI since the World Cup final, will also stay on for the limited-over games. Umesh Yadav and R Vinay Kumar make up the rest of the fast-bowling department.

Rahul Sharma, the legspinner who impressed during the series against West Indies, has been selected as the second spinner alongside R Ashwin. Manoj Tiwary scored his maiden ODI hundred in the fifth ODI against West Indies and is part of the squad again, which means there is no place for Ajinkya Rahane, who was part of the Test squad. Parthiv Patel has been picked as the reserve wicketkeeper despite his poor run with the bat in recent ODIs. Ravindra Jadeja, who has occupied the allrounder's spot in the limited-overs side since the one-day leg of the tour of England, has also been selected.

Yuvraj Singh's time away from cricket continues as he has not yet fully recovered from the non-malignant lung tumour that has kept him out of the team since the home ODIs against West Indies.

Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Suresh Raina, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Manoj Tiwary, Parthiv Patel (wk), Zaheer Khan, Umesh Yadav, Irfan Pathan, R Vinay Kumar, Praveen Kumar, Rahul Sharma, R Ashwin

agree with smullerpaten. Robin is a big hitter down the order and Parthiv is a top order batsman. We already have enough players for the top 3 with Sehwag, Gambhir and Sachin who all can open the inning. Anyways, on the whole, the team looks well balanced. I'm quite happy that Bhajji wasn't picked, not because he is a bad bowler, but it's about time we picked new, fresh spinners. I don't mind if they struggle now, because Ashwin, Ohja and Rahul Sharma have has potential to perform in the long run. And PLEASE selectors... PLEASE don't pick Vinay Kumar! I don't care if he's a legend at first-class level... but India need FAST-BOWLERS to succeed in the long run! NOT a guy who bowls 125kmph-130kmph! I would rather have Shahid afridi instead of a bowler like Vinay Kumar. We already have Praveen who is bit faster, and a lot better bowler. And I hope Umesh will be picked again for the ODI's... he has a great future! Good luck India! Don't mess up like you did in tests :)

Instead of Parthiv Patel, They should have picked Robin Uthappa as he is a better hitter than Parthiv. Robin can do wicketkeeping in case Dhoni does not play, which he has done admirably for Karnataka, RCB and Pune Warriors.Robin can also be a floater in the batting position.

Yet another step backwards for the Indian's by including Tendulkar. They clearly have learnt nothing from the absolute hammerings they have received at the hands of England and Australia... The inculsion of old, old of form and past their best player is only going to cause long term pain. The inclusion of Tendulkar is completely self indulgent as well and hardly has the best interest of his nation at heart. There is no way he would have made himself available if he had managed to get his 100th century... What a joke indian cricket is at the moment! It just illustrates he views himself as bigger and more important than the team, which for the most part, has held india back throughout his career. Looking forward to continued low scores from sachin and pummelling at the hand of the Aussie team over in the final test and throughout the ODI and T20 series.

For those who thinks SRT is not worth anymore / over rated / should retire : Sachin is not only a player but a coach as well. Many occasions we saw him giving tips to bowlers. He was the one who helped team to decode Ajanta Mendis bowling. He is the one who has won may matches for India again Single Handed. ( Sharjah, World Cup 96/99/2003/2011, 2007 Australia Tri Series and many more ( Websites could be referred if you are new as cricket fan ) moreover every player have right to extend his career by choosing the series they want to play, even after this Sachin is choosing to play only against good teams for team's benifit. Sachin never talks about his contribution on or off the field you may guess by 2011 WC, every player was playing for Sachin or by Bhajji's Gesture after he completed 1st test century or by Yuvraj's gesture while he was celebrating his century against Srilanka having Mendis in playing 11.

Lets make sure he gets a 100 in his first ODI itself...else a fresh talent will be blocked till he gets to a 100 for not sure how many years from now. 2011 went without a century and 2012 started with a mess from the Master Blaster!

Do not be offended by this and accept the reality 99 is also a good number to settle down.

ha.. here it comes again.. "Sachin selfish.. his runs r Not for team" I as an Indian, wish all my top order batsmen r as selfish as Sachin.. SRT averages 40+ in this series.. If everyone of the top 6 can score "selfish & not for team cause" 40 runs every innings, guess d result.. wowww.. v wud hv won MCG test.. drawn Sydney and "atleast" took the game to 4th r 5th day in Perth.. So sad, we have only one SELFISH player in the team..

for odi selector should pick these players gambhir, parthiv, rohit sharma, tendulker, kohli, raina, dhoni, jadeja, ashwin, irfan, zaheer, now we can see our batting up to the 10th player, if all 10 player makes average 25 run , we can easily make 250 run with no problem, in bowling we have zaheer, irfan, ashwin,, jadeja, rohit, kohli, raina and tendulker. in opening gambhir, parthiv, two left handler make aussi to confuse in bowling they cannot bowl well to left hand batsman very well in opening. rest as follows rohit, tendulker, kohli, raina, dhoni, jadeja, ashwin and irfan, good

  • rkannancrown on January 17, 2012, 5:48 GMT

Parthiv Patel & Vinay Kumar must count themselves lucky. Patel's keeping is so poor that India starts with a 20-30 run disadvantage every time he keeps. His average since being recalled is less than 25. so how come he is being selected repeatedly? Dinesh Kartick is probably the best keeper in the country but his biggest advantage is that he has scored runs against quality fast bowling in SA & England. As a substitute fielder, he is streets ahead of the other reserve keepers & is the one to be persisted with. if selectors did not want him, Rayadu or Uthappa would have as good keepers as patel but would have been better batsmen & fielders. Similarly, Vinay Kumar is not India material - he is ok for Ranji level. It would have been good to pick up some 20 -22 year old quicks & give them the chance to learn rather than persist with this pedestrian over the hill bowler who is too fast to be a slow bowler.

  • on January 17, 2012, 5:42 GMT

Where is Yousuf? is he unfit. BCCI never ever Nurture all-rounder for examle irfan, JP yadav, Sanjay Bangar, Ajit Aagarkar etc,etc and even Praveen Kumar. On the other hand PCB has developed many all-rounder like Abdul Razak, Azhar Mahamood, Afridi, Shoaib Malik they alllstared their career has specialist bowler or batsmen, Unfortunately BCCI has never done that and that is the reason why India is still finding another Kapildev. To win matches in abroad we need fast bowling all-rounder someonelike Klusner or Kallis but Unfortunately we wont mould the talent we recognise the talent but we never ever nurture them. For Example Sachin Tendulkar is the best leg spinner available but we never used him in the past couple of years. If we have used Viru, Sachin optimally for bowling then there was no need for specialist spinner atleasty in ODIs if they have bowled upto their potential then we would have gone up with 3-4 fast bowlers in the playing eleven.

The best XI men on current form should play for country.. Old men get automatically phased out. But it is only foolish to talk about retiring the only batsman who has looked in some touch in the current series!! What is age?? Who decides whether 35 is right or 42?? Let the performance decide, why even talk about age?? And by the way seniors are blocking entry for which youngster?? After Ganguly retired, one slot for no.6 was freed and till now we have been unable to find one single good youngster to fill that gap and we are talking about finding more?? Raina, Yuvraj, Kohli, all have flopped!! Anyways now Laxman is out of form so he has to retire, but not Sachin and Dravid, who deserve a place on current form... Reputation is for records and so is age.. what matters is performance and only performance!!

  • Ravi2605 on January 17, 2012, 3:54 GMT

SACHIN PLAYING FOR RECORDS??? One has to be dumb to talk about Sachin like this. If he wanted records, he could have played against weaker teams, which he has been avoiding for last 2-3 years including recent series against WI

  • on January 17, 2012, 3:43 GMT

Even if sachin quits from ODI.. sachin fans will bend backwards to push him in the team.... Sachin might be enjoying his batting... but he needs to walk the way he talk... team priority over his personal ambition!

  • here2rock on January 17, 2012, 3:06 GMT

What makes Tendulkar so special? He can pick series when he wants to play and not to play. This is a joke. No cricketer should be given a choice. It should be selectors' call.

  • aa61761 on January 17, 2012, 3:00 GMT

SRT should not be dropped at any cost, he is only one century away from huge milestone. 100 international 100's will stand for a very long time. Youngsters will not fair any better in Australia or England. Any way SRT is not doing that bad in Australia. It is the bowling which is failing all the time, not batting. 250+ most of the times on bowler friendly pitches is not a bad score.

and why is this 100th 100 had been made a reason for his comeback ?? lol if he wants it dearly he could have played in the home ODI series that happened before or in the upcoming ODI series that will be coming up in Indian ""deadly "" pitches.. Y select Australia when they are having a good gel of fast bowlers now???? All you need to do is think before you say somethin.... especially if it is someone who had spent 20 years entertaining this vastly differentiated country....

  • Siddharth_zenox on January 17, 2012, 2:28 GMT

We Indians are more reflective to an incident than anyone in the world :) Why are people so worried about Tendulkar being in the team ?? he is by far the confident batsmen who will come out of the test series. you people talk like you have a crystal ball that had shown that youngsters will shine :) what was the case of the best youngster you had in the last two years ?? kohli struggled in all overseas games apart from the perth and SCG second innings. Its not that the young talents will start rite away playin best of cricket. do they?? the best way to nourish young talents is by puttin them with good players.... and who among in the above chunk of people have performed well in Australia?? they are going to look up to Dhoni?? Gambhir? or shewag? what he does is best for Indian cricket.... there is a point in not having a senior in a home ODI but away you want someone to install confident..

you guys have got to be kidding. sachin's you're only batsmen in form, and you want him to retire?? you're dreaming!! seriously, sachin will have his eyes very much focused on World Cup 2015...Same as ponting. Mark my words ponting will try and retire early 2014 from tests at the end of the 13/14 ashes in oz and play on in ODI till the world cup. sachin will be there to try and finish his career with a victory in oz

  • tylerhans on January 17, 2012, 1:57 GMT

Not sure what the big fuss is about sachin... playing alongside sachin lot of players have stepped up their game ... I think we should let the guy influence as much as he can as many as he can. As long as he scores, it is a win win situation.... whats the fuss about one guy to retire... there are 10 other slots... big sachin mania again, get him to retire get him to retire... what a fuss! Get on with it, it is in the best interests of the country's game he continues to play as long as he is fit and scoring runs... he has the ability to influence people and people want to play alongside with him ... it inspires them.... I think Sehwag should retire, he scores a century in ten matches atleast sachin scores better than him.... (wait to see how many chastise me and rightly so...)...but then again... I think gabhir should also retire.. he is out of form anyway

I dont understand how can someone even consider it unfair to play Tendulkar in place of Rehane. Tendulkar is way way way a better batsmen than Rehane could evr be. Even if you consider the recent form and check his recent performances: Rehane has scored only 2 half centuries in his 11 match career so far whereas Tendulkar has score 3 centuries and 2 half centuries in his past 12 outings(including a massive double hundred against the bowling attack of mighty soufth africa). ODI cricket and Test cricket are two completely different things and you cant drop someone from the ODI team cause he dint perform in tests (even though he looked the most comfortable indian batsmen in australia).

  • bumsonseats on January 16, 2012, 21:18 GMT

i cannot understand his inclusion. is he close to retirerment and wants his 100 x 100 before he concludes his career. this guys seems to only want whats best for himself not the team or his country he should be ashamed.

  • THINK_BEYOND on January 16, 2012, 21:01 GMT

When Sachin is selected in ODI Squad, India should open with Sachin + Sehwag and drop Gambhir from final 11. I have a reason to say that. Sachin + Sehwag can offer some handy offspin 2-3 overs each even if they fail with the bat.....tell me what Gambhir can offer if he fails with the bat....only a sad face and some miss fields.

  • on January 16, 2012, 20:54 GMT

I would be very happy if Sachin can play for another 5 years at least. It woould be great. No doubt if he would perform well in Perth nobody won't say about his retirement. However, I am very disappointed about Sachin performance in Perth. He can stay in in the team as long as he wants provided he is performing well. But reality is Sachin performance is dropped significantly. If he can't perform well, he should retire right now. I wish Sachin for the very best for the last test Adiliade and the ODI series. But if you are not flourishing your bat this time, please consider retirement.

  • cricket_guru_india on January 16, 2012, 19:52 GMT

    Hi Everyone,

I totally agree with you all, but I also want to ask everyone one question. Can you list any one current youngster who did perform well, we gave chance to Kohli after the success in India in Test, what did he done in last 3 test. Atleast Sachin was able to hang over there and score few runs; he was close to 100 couple of times. Just being a youngster you are not going to score every match. Please comment after looking on the entire stats in the series.

I agree with the case of Laxman, we need to drop him and give Rohit a chance, but i would love to stick with both Rahul and Dravid until we see a really season from them.

  • Rahulbose on January 16, 2012, 19:39 GMT

What is the point of playing this series after getting whitewashed in the test matches? Tendulkar will probably get his 100 in ODIs, I pray that he finds the wisdom to quit after this tour. Same goes for Dravid and Laxman.

I totally differ with many people who wants SRT to retire. I know he hasn't done very well in Australia, but not too many have. Generally he is still playing great cricket and is definitely one of the most popular cricketer. He should continue to play as long as he can secure a place in the team solely based on his performance. It is always a delight to see him batting and scoring big.

  • Nampally on January 16, 2012, 19:14 GMT

Unfortunately too many people are deviating from the team &attacking Tendulkar. This is most unfortunate. It is not Sachin's fault that 99 precedes 100- a magical figure. Sachin was & is still the best Indian batsmen in the first 3 tests irrespective of all the negative comments. He was the only confident batsman in the current Indian batting. He scored in each of the 4 innings prior to Perth test, which is more than can be said of others.Even in ODI, Sachin is the best batsman for India. He along with Sehwag are the only 2 guys in the world who have a double Ton in ODI. Lest we forget, that is the fact. So stop bashing Sachin. I welcome Sachin for the ODI's. India will beat the Aussies in the ODI's.You will see Sehwag, Sachin, Raina, Rohit, Kohli &Dhoni in full cry despite what happened in the Tests. If the same squad was selected for the Tests, India may have won the Test series. Srikant: Did India needed a kick in the pants to pick a much better & balanced squad? Dhoni, Don't blow it.

  • bestofluckindia on January 16, 2012, 17:53 GMT

"Vinay kumar makes up the fast bowling department." Really i think there is a typo. It should have been that Ashwin, Rahul and Vinay complete the spin department.

  • bestofluckindia on January 16, 2012, 17:50 GMT

Wish all the players get good practise before the all important IPL season ahead. Who cares about the australian tour? Well I think Raina has the best technique and should be selected for Perth ODI. Wow Vinay kumar got selected wonderful. Mindblowing team selection.

  • dosapati_anand on January 16, 2012, 17:47 GMT

CA requested BCCI to play Tendulkar and these fellows have agreed. This cricket business has nothing to do with real cricket. Hopeless.

  • on January 16, 2012, 17:26 GMT

I would thank Tendulkar, Sehwag, Laxman, Dravid, Zaheer, Ishant Sharma, Irfan Pathan for their services and ask them to move on......Let the young guns take on charge. We have Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane n many more lined up to prove........Tendulkar pls dont disgrace our country for d sake of one century.....

Everyone here commenting that Sachin should retire due to his poor form and his "over-hyped 100th Ton", Can u please tell which other player have performed exceptionally well? No one! Sachin atleast scored some runs to save our team. And why the hell Parthiv Patel is taken instead of Dinesh Karthik? Dinesh is a good batsman and a good keeper/fielder as well.

  • on January 16, 2012, 17:11 GMT

Uthappa could have got a go. Sreesanth, Munaf, RP Singh, Nehra...are gone forever? Harbajan, Yuvaraj, etc may never be back. Dinesh Karthik's career over too? And probably Venugopal Rao's too. Again there is nothing exciting about this team. No surprise element. Hope they play Rohit and Rahane in Adelaide. If possible get the ODI players to play in the test and send back VVS, Dravid, Ishant...

  • knan on January 16, 2012, 17:11 GMT

Parthiv should do well in Aus, as he has a good repertoire of horizontal bat shots. He should open with Sachin , and only one of Sehwag or Gambhir should play. Also Rohit should be in the XI instead of Raina. My XI would be 1. Sachin 2. Parthiv 3. Kohli 4. Rohit 5. Sehwag 6. Dhoni 7. Jadeja 8. Ashwin 9. Irfan 10. Praveen 11. Zaheer

It will be a great idea, to give rest to Dhoni, Sehwag, Gambir,Tendulkar,Zaheer Khan for the ODI's and give chance to younger guys now! Right now that is ! A rest will do good for the seniors and we can groom some young ones. Failure really does not matter. Especially now !

@ All who said Sachin should retire..!

Let me ask u straight question..~ "Ru Nuts" ????

Guyz he is THE one best performer of all indian cricket team... BCCI is not bothered abt his individual record but u ppl are!

even in these conditions(Australian tour 2012) his average is the best so far in the batting line up... and he paid penalty for a bad decision in the last innings... wht on hell make u ppl think that he shud get out of cricket...! luk at the big picture ppl.. HE IS THE ONE SPORTSMAN FROM INDIA WHO IS RESPECTED BY ALL NATIONS. He is a Jewel to the country... Get over it guyz.!

  • on January 16, 2012, 15:51 GMT

Drop sehwag and sachin and afcourse dhoni they dooing nothing good for INdian team in current test team .Send Sachin to some tour of bangladesh so that he will make his 100th ton and retire I just sick of seeing him play just for that same reasone .Sehwag is playing in a very irrisponsible way .Team wins or looses dosent bother him much.

  • on January 16, 2012, 15:51 GMT

why Tendulkar ? 100 century, other than that I dont see any other reason. Without him, what worst can happen. Indian batting will fail. We have not seen any much change. BCCI, stop this for heaven's sake.

Do without Sehwag, Tendulkar. Belive me, the Kohli's , Rainas, Dhonis, Ghambirs, Jadejas are good enough.

Vinay Kumar is mediocre, fit to play possibly club cricket. Why Him?

The Aussies will slaughter him and others like lambs. Its not the fact you loose, but by how much do you loose.

With both Sehwag and Tendulkar in the side, even the last pretex for failure is lost.

What is SRT? State Road Transport? Often runs well. Even on rough roads. Runs beyond it's expected life. With enough repair work done over the years. But, almost always gets retired when it almost stops running! How true? (The resemblance of SRT with the initials of a great cricketer of the modern era is purely coincidental)

  • nkoch on January 16, 2012, 15:21 GMT

Why are people gunning for Sachin to retire? All should learn from the passion he has for the game. So what if he wants to get 100th 100? Don't we all strive to get something or the other in life? If you call him selfish, so is everyone else. Jaywardhane said it right, India does not know how to respect their heroes.

  • on January 16, 2012, 15:09 GMT

Dear sachin, Dont you think you are denying one youngster the opportunity to experience bouncy conditions in australia? What else do you need to prove to the world in ODI's ? Why does the board bend to your whims and fancies to play? You should either make your intentions to play in the 2015 world cup clear like kallis else quit in grace with the world cup final as your last match . Please dont tell me its the love of the game.I want to know if you would sit in the mumbai ranji dressing room as you did for MI in the champions league? I again request you to announce your retirement from ODI's and give your successors chance to gain experience

He led from front in the 1st test, scored in the 2nd test while everybody fell like a pack of cards ... Stop criticizing him ... Its very sad to see that until and unless he scores a Century, his scores are not counted towards team's goal ... Do they delete his 70-80s from the Indian Team's Total?

Mr. DYSP, I cant understand y all of u going after sachin's head inspite all these things happening he is one of India's leading rungetter in the current test series, I also want robbie uthappa to be part of indian squad but not in place of sachin, he can also come in place of ghambir who is also struggling for form except that dogge 88 in one of the innings if u see the previous odi series returning from injury he is surely struggling for form, the selectors should ask him to return to domestic leg for finding form. On yousuf he is also a good guy but he dont play that short stuff very well thats the only point for not considering him for selection i think...

  • atuljain1969 on January 16, 2012, 12:34 GMT

It is strange that we all agree that, rotation or new blood need to be groomed and seniors need to be rested, but when it comesto actual selection for one dayers, nothing seem to be implemented.

Sachin, Zaheer havebeen selected for what purpose ?.

Why not give chance to good performers in current Ranji season after all selections for Test matches is now based on 20-20 and one day performance.

  • akshay_Yusuf on January 16, 2012, 12:33 GMT

Uttappa in place of manoj tiwary. He is one of the few back foot players from India to play in bouncy conditions. The technical reason why Uttappa was dropped at that stage was because he does not play spin well and now he has worked on it and ready still not getting a chance because of dhoni's politics.Rahane has some technical flaws which he needs to correct. He is a good back foot player but while coming forward he is vulnerable and should work on it . And also mind sachin is the only guy in form now who attacks the australian bowlers which Dravid and others in the team missed in the series.ok leave that test series, it will take a 192 page note book. And parthiv patel selection is waste.even if he is picked he will get only 20 or 30 thats it.Dinesh karthick is the right option for next future after dhoni in tests so dinesh must be given chanceas he is a good timer of fast bowlers and plays spin well, but lacks in maturity and throws his wicket cheaply which he himself must analyse

He has shown most energy on pitch when it comes to bat, He look fluent than all other youngs though out three test matches. Some one please tell me what has Rahane has done in last 5 ODI? I would ask Sehwag or Gambhir to retire before Sachin if Sachin plays the way he is still playing.

  • mishim on January 16, 2012, 12:14 GMT

Sachin won't retire cuz he know once he gets back to India he will massacre all opposition bowlers and stretch his records in Test and ODI cricket. Sachin wants to get to 20000 runs in ODIs no doubt! He also won't retire from Test cricket. Why? Because if he does then Jacques Kallis could chase down his records and become the top Test scorer of all time!

In-spite of having a very decent last series with his batting, Ajinkya Rahane misses out the next ODI series. He is one of batsmen who have scored heavily and consistently in the local 1st class cricket and still has been denied a deserving place in the ODI team. And all of this sacrifice just to accomodate SRT. The board has to be very clear on what they want to do. They can either try nad please selfish cricketers or be brave to get opportunities to people who deserve.

  • DYSP on January 16, 2012, 10:46 GMT

But I dnt think why everyone specially some pakistanis over here are trying to talk so bad abt him! He has done everything he can do for a team to win, when he is in the team. why the hell would he be the reason for team india's loss and why not the remaining 10 players??? stop blaming sachin everytime.. he is a player not a team.. go get some life people

Lets treat Great man with respect!! He could play any format on his own decision. No matter he is the great batsman of this time. Its the downfall of Indian team that is so much pain to Sachin. Specially Dhoni!! I blame Dhoni for everything. Even if your are 5 down for 100 can't he provide captains innings with the help of OLD ball to take to score to 250 instead of getting team OUT for 161 & 171!! He only cares IPL money nothing else..

  • Nutcutlet on January 16, 2012, 7:58 GMT

Seems as if SRT should get his wretched hybrid 100 x100 v SL in this cynical money-spinner. As for long-term planning - oh, forget that - India doesn't do planning, only financial exploitation of dim-witted cricket fans everywhere. God knows, the BCCI sees them as an uncomplaining, uncritical cash cow.

why they not select Rahane he is very good player..i would love to see him

  • on January 16, 2012, 7:47 GMT

Why not Ajinkya Rahane? he played some good innings at England Tour and conditions are almost similar like Australia. Selectors do give chance to the players who are peforming and attacking.

  • Sarfin on January 16, 2012, 7:43 GMT

Sachin playing for 100th 100!!! Then why didn't he play against WI or England in home soil? This is insane blaming him on this matter. He is just unlucky not to carry on after a good start. It happens to all. But his tons should not create such a buzz when his team's performance is bellow standard.

  • on January 16, 2012, 7:37 GMT

What is Vinaykumar doing in the squad. Just an average bowler & fielder. With Zaheer, Praveen, Yadav and Irfan in a fifth fast bowler does not make sense. Since batting is our weakness, someone like Manish Pandey could have been given an exposure.

  • on January 16, 2012, 7:32 GMT

We do not agree with the team, Jadeja, Rohit Raina, Dhoni, Zaheer, Praveen Yadav, Ashwin Gambhir Robin Kohli,,, 12 players Irfan

  • on January 16, 2012, 7:26 GMT

Including Irfan pathan, India can play wit 10 players...nd sure praveen wil not b shine frm ds series

  • Mohan1502 on January 16, 2012, 7:24 GMT

I think India is going to lose the ODI series once again in spite of having a strong batting line up because we dont have quickies to contain the Australian batsman in Australia....Remember we are not playing in India.....Why they selected Vinay Kumar ahead of Ishant Sharma....I believe except Ravindra jadeja and ZAK no one is going to perform from the bowling department...If India want to win a ODI match we need Dhoni's luck to be in favor as he had in 1st T20 world cup and in recent 50 over World cup.. LOL... Selectors need to consider a lot of criteria in selecting the players......

  • on January 16, 2012, 7:19 GMT

Everyone makes comments about the Senior batsmen failure.....In 2011 Rahul Dravid is the highest run scorer in the Test Cricket... This Series Sachin and Dravid were the higest scorers... In bowling department... After Zaheer and Yadav.. Vinay has the good average... For Vinay giving one chance and asking him abt his performance is really bad... what Ishanth did in australia after bowling @ 150+kmh speed.... can able to pick only 4 wickets in 4 tests.... its really bad performance... I will back Rahul, Sachin and Laxman for tests at least this year... and we need to groom the fast bowling/Swing bowler like Praveen and Vinay under Zaheer before he retires...

  • on January 16, 2012, 6:44 GMT

  • ThatzMyView on January 16, 2012, 6:38 GMT

I am from karnataka, but i dont like Vinay in India team, hez not upto international standards.. But Robin Uthappa, is a deserving candidate he had pretty good Syed Mustaq Ali, Challengers and other limited over domestic tourneys. Hez been constantly neglected and Vinay is picked.. Even Binny is the right fit he bowls around 130-135, get the ball to swing, very handy bat, has big tons and five fors(He is a perfect all rounder).. Manish Pandey is totally unlucky - topclass player consistent performer at domestics hasn't played a game for india yet.. Pity on all of them when you see Parthiv patel / Vinay Kumar / Gautam Gambhir(Consistent non-performer) in india team

Sachin & Dravid should learn a lesson from aussies like Gilchrist, Steve Waugh, McGrath, Langer, Ian Healy, Hayden, Bevan. They all could play for few more years but they left cricket at the top of their game to make way for youngsters. They played for their country not for their own records. Sachin & Dravid have surely lost their credibility. They are not great players atleast for me.

  • on January 16, 2012, 5:25 GMT

Refusing to step down; many senior Indian players were humiliated while being dropped in the past like Jimmy, Sunny, Kapil and Dada.... I am sure SRT will understand this and make a graceful exit... We don't need u to score the 100th 100 to prove you are the greatest.... Leave it and get going SRT.... On the other hand Viru and Gambir should take a break since there are no way in form so that youngsters get these opportunities.... Also Zaheer, like lasit should play only smaller version of the sport... Else there is no way this Indian squad going to improve...unless they decide to play all their matches in Indian-Flat tracks...

  • JustOUT on January 16, 2012, 5:23 GMT

This is an extremely high profile Tournament. Australia and India will be very competitive, but I feel that Sri Lanka is not in a position to really play the two. Sri Lanka needs to take a break from International cricket. They are not used to playing this much in a year.

  • on January 16, 2012, 5:21 GMT

    1) Sehwag 2) Tendulkar 3) Kohli (Good form from last test, fielder, variety as a change bowler) 4) Sharma (Sheer talent, positive past experience in Aus, good form, Fielder) 5) Raina (Barring WACA, Aussie pitches don't have much bounce. Game changer, Fielder, partnership breaker, enthusiasm infuser) 6) Dhoni 7) Ashwin (Off Spin, All-rounder) 8) Irfan (Left arm Swing, All-rounder) 9) P Kumar (Right arm Swing) 10) Zaheer (Left arm Hit the Deck) 11) Yadav (Right arm FAST, Hit the Deck)

    12) Jadeja (Just not good enough at this level, especially in Aus) 13) Gambhir (Very tentative right now, single-skill disadvantage)

Another SERIES lost away,IND down and dusted,I am sure it shall be 4-0 like ENGLAND,It shall happen to us as we need to bring in transition phase with LAX,DRAVID and Sachin going out,AUS also paid price for it after gilly,Haydos,Mcgrath went they LOST WCUP to IND and TEST STATUS,so it is good the KOHLIS,SHARMAS should stand up and to fil the gaps,MAKE GAUTAM GAMBHIR the NEW TEST SKIPPER,rather than SEHWAG he can handle the test team,MS is good ODI skipper and he should think of 2015 WCUP and 2012 T20 now, what a pity all these shall come back to form in IPL and CL T20 but not test cricket T20 is ruinig the technique and ability to play test cricket,STILL A good ODI team picked by selectors to challenge AUS and SRL remember we need to DEFEN ASIA CUP also in MARCH so hopefully in ODIS this team can deliver and pay back the AUSSIES PK,ZAK are the key players to watch and come good,RAINA is alos very good ODI player, they must be Itching to take revenge in ODI's for what happened in Tests!!

Sachin is under pressure to score his 100th century whether he agrees it or not and it is affecting his game and the team. He needs to take a call after the Australia tour on his future in the Indian team. It is better to quit the game on top than being asked to leave and the pain would be more so if he does not reach his 100th century.

Gavaskar left when he was on top.

Remember Bradman would have had a perfect 100 average had he got 4 runs in his last innings. May be Tendulkar is destined to be stuck on 99 hunderds.

He cannot be replaced (he has the best batsman ever he world has seen and the new comer should be given some time). Nevertheless we need to look ahead and accept the bitter fact that maybe it is time Tendulkar calls it a day.

It is utter failure on the part of Sachin, in all these four tests. Specially, in the last innings, he almost showed his displeasure in the decision given against him. Do we see a man who is becoming greater than cricket itself ?

We are to be blamed , if this has happened. All the hype about a Bharat Ratna, etc.

Let this sabre rattling be laid to rest, at last, with our fall from grace in downunder.

Failure of batting is not the only the concern....The bowling also needs to be looked in as well....Zaheer Khan may not play in the next few years...Its Important the selectors choose bowlers specifically for tests and ODIs. At the same time improve the pitch conditions in India rather than always playing to our strength ....which is meaning less cricket.

  • xylo on January 16, 2012, 3:52 GMT

Wow... it just does not cease to amaze me how someone would extinguish the hopes of a budding talent (Rahane, for the uninitiated) for a personal milestone. It has become so hopeless now, that probably even his family will not cheer when he reaches his 100-th 100. Now, Murali was a true man - he called out his final test and said if he gets his 800th wicket, so be it. And guess what happened?

Calling for Sachin's head has become almost fashionable these days... what a pity!

  • on January 16, 2012, 3:38 GMT

why are so people so obsessed with Sachin calling it quits. The number 100 is just a record which he would get in the ODI series. He already has 49 100 day hundreds and it was total nonsense to expect him to score a test hundred which if I am not mistaken is already 51. So please do not ask him to step down. He knows when to step down so please leave him alone especially the arm chair critics who do not know the ABCD of cricket. I think the ex players do not qualify themselves to criticise him

  • SRT_GENIUS on January 16, 2012, 3:28 GMT

Sehwag, Tiwary, Kohli, Sharma, Raina, Dhoni, Jadeja, Pathan, Ashwin, Kumar, Yadav. Time for India to go with some new faces. Sachin and Gambhir aren't going to do the job in the ODIs cos they haven't done the job in the tests, their best format. Try out some youth and prepare for next world cup which will be in this country. Sehwag is a natural short game player, he stays but other than that give the youth a chance.

  • BeatTheChamps on January 16, 2012, 2:48 GMT

I think the best thing Sachin can do is to announce his retirement from international cricket after this ODI series. That way he still has a chance to get his 100th ton during this ODI series (in which he will play at least 8 games, that too as an opener) and it will also prove that he's not playing only for the 100th ton because the retirement decision would have come before he achieves it. If he doesn't get the 100th, so be it. 99 hundreds is equally respectable. If by God's grace he gets it, then it will be a perfect goodbye to a fascinating career.

  • AVRAJAN on January 16, 2012, 1:52 GMT

India is again doing the same mistake. Raina has lost his form and should not have been picked. The Board should have the courage to drop the seniors and give chance to youngsters. Talent and current form and not the fame of the individual should be given importance. And why Tendulkar again? May be to score his 100th century. Now even those fans who does not like Tendulkar started praying for his achievement so that it will pave way for youngsters.

How does parthiv continue to be in the team - is it because of chirayu amin's or Niranjan shah's quota - baffling. He has repeatedly failed in all the ODI's vs England and WI at home though he batted "decently" in england failing to get a big score even after getting good starts. Saha should have been continued even in the ODI's as the 2nd keeper though I would be surprised if the 2nd keeper gets to play even one game. I personally would have dropped sehwag (on form) and included Rahane in his place -also it is time to look beyond Zaheer (suspect fielding and batting) in the ODI's since no way he is going to be part of the next world cup squad. Despite the drubbing the selectors are playing safe - they would put an argument that ODI's are different from tests etc - they could have showed their anger and started the "seniors" chalo movement with the dropping of sehwag and Zaheer for the ODI's. Also Vinay kumar does not look international class - he is poor man's pravin kumar.

Sachin's selection shows his desperation to score hundred if not in Tests ( which he has shown his incapability in 1 year) then atleast in 1 day at the cost of juniors learning in the Australian soil which will be useful for 2015 world cup.He should retire with respect now itself and give others chance to grow. The whole Indian seniors should retire after this series and pave way for the youngsters.

  • katsunn on January 16, 2012, 1:06 GMT

  • pravineswar on January 15, 2012, 23:55 GMT

I feel Robin Uttappa & Ashok Dinda should have been selected in place of Sachin & Zaheer in the squad.

ODI team should be able to manage without Sachin & his services are essential in tests since our young batsman are still finding their feet in test matches.Sachin is not going to play 2015 World Cup, it is time to invest in other players at least in ODIs. His 100th hundred can wait till India plays next test series. With Robin's hitting capabilities, he should be nurtured&persisted since he can keep wickets too.

We all know about Zaheer's fitness and im sure he will break down after he plays this ODI series. His presence in test matches are essential with India needing 20 wickets to win test matches and we cant afford another break down in middle of test series. Ashok has done far better than Irfan & other bowlers in Ranji trophy this year and definitely needs a look in soon.

Parthiv, i agree is committed and gritty player one can get but he needs to score big runs quickly.

  • Semoli on January 15, 2012, 23:42 GMT

The team should be run like a professional outfit. A team has back ups, succession plans and roadmaps. I wonder if Sachin and Co realise the harm they are causing to the team by being adamant about not wanting to talk about retirement.

It is only fair we (the biggest stakeholders) expect some level of professionalism here.

Nobody will dispute that Sachin Tendulkar is one of the best batsman in the world in any form of the game. I watched him play when he first came to Australia as a teenager and predicted that he will be better than Viv Richards. It is very clear that he has been selected for the 50 over tournament with Australia and Sri Lanka, to give him the chance of getting his 100th test and 50 over century, as he was not able to convert the 50+ to 100 in the tests. Isn't it a case of the selectors promoting an individuals "cause" instead of thinking nationally and concentrating on "Mother India" and selecting a promising youngster into the 50 over squad ?

  • tearsinblue on January 15, 2012, 23:15 GMT

Let's hope the ODI series is a bit more exciting. The game has suddenly become really one-sided favouring home teams. England win in England, India win in India, Australia win in Australia. Lions at home, lambs abroad.

  • ma01 on January 15, 2012, 23:13 GMT

I don't understand why Vinay kumar is selected for? - no pace, no swing. Same is with Irfan pathan. Indian fast bowling unit needs explosive fast bowlers- BCCI needs to search for bowlers who can bowl above 150kph. we don't have a single bowler who can make an impact with pace. Now- Where is harbhajan?. i think dinesh karthik would be a better choice over parthiv patel.

  • on January 15, 2012, 22:42 GMT

The people who comment on Sachin's inclusion must check their own cricketing knowledge. How much more you would expect from a man who had given it all for the country for 22 continuous years? Still, you want him to single handedly win games & if he fails in some occasions, you will call for his head. If he scores his 100th ton, all these half baked people will congratulate him, as if they scored it. Internet provides a platform for all so-called geniuses who will not clean up their own back & comment on legends like the Master Blaster. YES, for a SACHIN FAN, 100th ton is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE TEAM'S WIN. This is an immature word, but I also want to show myself half baked now, seeing the no. of comments against the master. For sure, he will make India win the ODI series & then I would like to see the comments. Real life selfish people are calling the God as selfish! Pathetic...

  • AbdullahShaikh on January 15, 2012, 22:41 GMT

@ ashwin49 .. i agree. AS for as SRT's 100th ton is concerned the selectors should arrange a series with Namibia or Nepal or UAE, because stronger asslociates like Afghanistan, Ireland, Scotland etc may not allow SRT to get the 100th ton. Sirs, Selectors Please .... end his misery and also the misery of the fans as we are now tired of this hype. And then give him a Grand Farewell Game. The Greatest little Master deserves it.

  • Aaron007 on January 15, 2012, 22:26 GMT

Wriddhiman Saha should've be given a chance as the supplementary WK instead of Parthiv. He has sound technique and after seeing the struggle of Top quality Indian batsmen in the Australian Pitches (never mind AUS's amazing bowling line-up), it would only make sense to have batsmen who knw to play straight. Parthiv performed in one inning in England but because he got away a few times after playing some ridiculous shots. I guess we have learnt that there is no more getting away and technique plays a very important part in any form of Cricket. Apart from that, wicket keeping skills matter the most and he is surely sloppy behind the wickets. Saha has been waiting enough for a chance to play, after seeing him play only in a few innings in IPL (and good ones too), i only hope to see more of him but it seems farfetched. I hope that Indian selectors become more open minded and make some decisions without being over calculative.

  • on January 15, 2012, 22:04 GMT

History says that India has not done well in Australia in the ODI's apart from 2 occasions. Benson & hedges trophy- 1985 and Tri series in 2008. The one player who did well in the 2 finals last time India played in Aus was Sachin. Anybody who watched the current Test series will understand why Sachin is selected, cos he is the only one played who has looked comfortable at the crease, apart from Virat at Perth. Sachin bashing is a trend now a days. I have watched Indian cricket closely from 1980 till date. This team is now not performing well abroad, but then, when has any Indian team performed well consistently abroad. After Kapil, there is no greater impact player our country has seen than Sachin. I will even say he has been the best sportsman this country has produced since the 1980's. Apart from being a cricketer Sachin was a source of energy to our country, which did not have many hero's to look up to. So please don't ridicule yourselves by insulting a nation's hero.

Ishnat Sharma should have been included in place of Vinay Kumar. The selectors got to think with their knowledge of touring. This is Australia. The bowling can win ODI's. Vinay could have been effective and Ishant could have been ineffective in India. But, here, Ishant's bowling would have been important. No need to have Zaheer. A bit hard to drop Sehwag. But, I am sure he will fail. So, will Gambhir. But, the selectors can only learn after the series. My preferred 11 from this squad will be: Tendulkar, Sehwag, Raina, Kohli, Rohit, Tiwary, Dhoni, Irfan, Jadeja, Yadav, Zaheer. If Jadeja's bowling fails consistently, then Ashwin can included, but needs to be told that he should act like a sportsman and give his best in the field.

  • Philip_Gnana on January 15, 2012, 21:14 GMT

Why not arrange for a One Test series with Sri Lanka as usual, as that would have enabled SRT to get his one hundredth century? That is something he will surely be able to do. Playing against minnows that is.

  • Al_Bundy1 on January 15, 2012, 21:10 GMT

Selection is good, except for Sachin. After poor performance in the test series, he should have been kicked out of the ODI team. If the selectors want to give him a chance to complete his 100th 100, let him play on the flat pitches in India.

  • Dravid_Pujara_Gravitas on January 15, 2012, 21:08 GMT

There is no point in Sachin playing ODIs in Australia. The only purpose of him playing ODIs should be for getting that artificial 100th 100. That's all. If Sachin makes a century at Adelaide, I would never pick him for any ODIs except for a farewell series as a goodwill gesture. Next WC is in Australia and how dumb to play him in this triangular series if he isn't going to play WC2015. I sincerely hope he makes a century at Adelaide and spares our ODI Team at least. Even if he doesn't score a century at Adelaide, we shouldn't pick him for this triangular series. Our youngsters deserve that spot.

  • on January 15, 2012, 21:03 GMT

Beats me how insensitive Indian fans can be! Many comments here call Sachin "selfish", "playing only for 100th hundred", "not ready to give chance to young blood" and mention "his poor form in the tests" Do you guys realize that even in his "poor form", he was the most successful Indian batman with an ave of 41.5 (2nd highest among regular Indian batsmen was Dravid at 28!) And I have no idea how people differentiate between scoring runs for country and for oneself! I don't recall once when he has slowed down team run-rate when nearing a 100! Yes, even I was expecting more from him: on this tour & some more critical occasions too! Yes, he isn't God, perhaps not even a great finisher! But he still is the best one that we have!! As for the young blood argument, He has taken rest numerous times from ODIs to give them chance. But at this point, when the team is at its lowest point in post-Ganguly era, we need him in the team: as a performer and as a morale-booster for the rest of the team

  • HawksEyeFocused on January 15, 2012, 20:47 GMT

I strongly believe that India will also be white-washed in T-20's and ODIs as well...a total winless series!!! Finally India will be at its well-deserved ranking spot i.e. TOP from BOTTOM at the end of the series!!!

(See my name: Sachin is my favorite player of all time obviously but his time is over and it would be very selfish for him to go on).

  • bingorighton on January 15, 2012, 20:07 GMT

@ bundy....who you calling selfish ? well i wish atleast 1 player could go selfish and score 100 runs for himself. virat ? msd ? gambhir ? sehwag ? go selfish and try and score a 100. those 100 and every run a selfish player scores will add to indian total too. just age cannot be a ticket into indian team. you need to earn the spot. see the stats given by sachin chaudhary....Rahul dravid and sachin are the best 2 scores in the 6 losses that hurt us all. wish the so called unselfish players had contributed more and you wouldnt have seen these 6 losses.

  • on January 15, 2012, 19:29 GMT

Milestones are meant for armchair critics & keyboard bashers. Not for champions. Sachin Tendulkar continues to play cricket purely for his love of the game. Whether he gets his 100th or not will have no impact on his retirement. He will continue playing as long as he scores runs & contributes to the team. It is a crying shame that he's being projected as a schemer by a few shallow sighted people. Guess that's the price SRT pays for his ever dignified silence.

  • haq33 on January 15, 2012, 19:20 GMT

I am beginning to think that there is seriously something wrong with the Indian cricketing mentality, a blame to be shared by both the BCCI and the fans who keep egging SRT on pointlessly. Truly bizarre to see that a below-par Sachin is going to be picked for the one-dayers simply to try and get his 100th against a top team. Clearly there are younger players waiting in the ranks who deserve a chance after the test debacle. Let Sachin play at home against BD so he can revel in his own self-glorification. Until then, give the next generation a chance.

  • on January 15, 2012, 19:20 GMT

@AI_Bundy1: You cannot decide to quit players . Players Knows when to quit moreover In this series Sachin is the only player scored more runs in the series .Already we had given enogh chances to the youngsters but they are not comparable with sachin .

  • Harry0009 on January 15, 2012, 19:19 GMT

Again am not sure about the rationale behind this. If this is to help Sachin score the 100th ton, makes sense. But let's face the fact, injecting fresh blood would have helped. Sehwag is surely out of form, and hope he gets better for ODIs. Not sure about the persistent selection of Vinay Kumar who seems to be like a Medium pacer can be thrashed at will. What happened to Varun Aaron. Has he lost pace after injury only time will tell?

Better exit gracefully than to end up in a bad farewell years later.

  • wolf777 on January 15, 2012, 19:12 GMT

@ Sachin Chaudhry...Irfan should be picked in the team as an allrounder not as a pure bowler. Those of us who want him back in the eleven, want him in place of the sixth batsman's place. By picking only three bolwers, India is often found out of fresh bowlers to wipe out the tail. Irfan could be very handy in giving bowlers rest and at the same time a threat to the opposition in any condition. Also, when a bowler gets injured, Irfan is there to pick up the load. If you remember, India was very much in the game before Zaheer got injured on the first day of Lord's test. With only three bowlers left, India was out of the game right away.

He is back to full form but selectors chose to neglect for aussie series STRANGELY. Whereas Sachin Tendulkar is the most selfish player in the world he plays only for himself. Dhoni should be dropped immediately from test team. Selectors probably pick Parthiv Patel to keep Dhoni's Place safe in ODI's. I Strongly feel Ibrahim Khaleel should have been Selected Ahead of Saha and Parthiv. Becoz these two are the worst wicketkeeper batsman we have but still they are selected Strange.

Parthiv patel is another waste.. Wridhhiman was already in the test squad & parthiv patel has failed repeatedly.. Moreover W Saha has been net practicing in aus pitches & also played in the practice matches before the tour.. So instead of parthiv they should have retained W Saha .. Dinda who is the 2nd highest wicket taker in Ranji this season that too Bengal didn't qualify for QF otherwise he would have bagged more wickets... Dinda should have been selected over Irfan & Vinay Kumar .. Sachin who didn't play an ODI from WC onwards suddenly decides to play just to reach his personal milestone.. This is really selfishness from a man of his stature...being Sachin in starting 11 one young player has to sit out which means more sloppy indian team in the field

Don't understand why everbody want the blood of God of cricket? Did he score 99 centuries? What else you need? Politics and cinema don't have age of retiring, more the age more the stronger you get in politics. Likewise, Sachin should be given a life time membership in team India which in turn will fetch 200 or 300 centuries for him, so what else we need? Lifetime membership is the best thing that we confer to great Sachin than the Barat ranta. Also, when he passes the age of 50, BCCI should amend the law of cricket to allow Sachin to have a runner (his son), not to allow rival bolwlers bowling at a speed of 80 KPM, no LBW against Sachin and so on.

I don't know y Vinaya kumar has been picked. He never been match winnig player. On what basis he is picked again and again. Dhoni should be kicked out of tests immediately after this series. All Indian players are not playing well becaz of IPL. They are earning log of money. BCCI should stop playing IPL. Otherwise our Indian team will become worst than bangladesh. Better remove all old players and give chances to yougsters.

He wants to open in ODIs where the 20 over fielding restrictions apply but cannot do the same in Tests, at a time when the regular opener, especially Sehwag, given his lack of footwork, is susceptible.

Very self centered. Only motive appears a desire to hit the 100th 100 in Aus.

  • soumik on January 15, 2012, 17:49 GMT

Now he should be playing ODI given the 100s of hundreds didn't come along despite his repeated tries in tests. He is giving it another shot by choosing to play in ODIs.He himself knows that the end is nearing.Otherwise what's the rationale of playing this series where he hasn't played a single ODI after WC?Maybe you are the greatest after Sir Don (I don't know),but it's the time to go,Mr.SRT.Hope you are aware of someone named Sunil Gavaskar who left it on a high and it's still applicable for you.But don't be late Sir,otherwise such a great statistical career will have no meaning to your die-hard fans even.

All those asking for Varun, he is not fit. So you have to stay with Vinay Kumar. Not that I like him, but no more choices unless you want to try out with Ishant.

For Sachin, it has become more of a routine for many to crib about him. But check the numbers guys. He is the only Indian featuring in top 5 run getters in the ongoing series. And he made his run fluently, din't struggle like others.

As per stats for the 6 tests (Eng + Aus) excluding Perth test, the stats of our batsmen are as follows. So if VVS is poorer than MSD(read no technique), he definitely deserves to be out. The stats clearly indicate that even when RD and SRT ...have not done well they are better than the current crop (MSD, GG, VS, VK). Indian batting is terrible due to too much T20(IPL) and there aren't many young players with solid technique to do well abroad (SA, Eng and Aus).

while rahane did not play well in india and was not given a chance in australia one feels that ashwin probably should have been dropped for does seem that the BCCI has not noticed teh failures in australia...and many think they should have thought of how their openers played...however sehwag is still a good one day opener and spinner...obviously the addition of raina, tiwary, jadeja, rahul sharma, irfan and praveen kumar will give dhoni some maneovring room...but is dhoni capable of utilizing all his resources..probably so in one dayers...maybe india should go in for a different test captain..!

This ODI squad is much better than the Test squad because of the 2 all rounders in place -Jadeja & Pathan & a wrist leg spinner like Rahul Sharma is included. Now it is Dhoni's turn to avoid his blunders in selecting his final XI. What happened to Aaron? Is he still not recovered to be selected? Aaron is the other guy apart from Yadev to hit 140 KPH mark, would have been ideal guy in Australian conditions. Aaron or Dinda should have replaced Vinay Kumar to add some pace. Yadev, ZAK, Aaron & Irfan/Praveen would have been a good combo of variety - swing, pace Lefty/Rightie. Sachin will open with Sehwag followed by Gambhir, Kohli, Rohit, Dhoni, Raina/Pathan, Rahul/Ashwin, ZAK,Yadev, Praveen Kumar. Since batting is the focus, Gambhir because of his OZ playing exoerience may win #3 spot. The newcomers Raina, Tiwary, Pathan & kumar have to get used to the Aussie pitches. These guys are all < 26 years & provide agility in the field to & add intensity, Guts & will to WIN as well. Go India!

Sachin, you are the greatest ever to have played cricket. But you should exit gracefully and not wait until you get your 100th century. Even the great Don quit cricket when his test average was 99.9. He never wanted to raise his average to 100.

A 20 or 30 from you in the ODI's is not going to help India's cause. Kindly pave way for youngsters and let them get the valuable match experience abroad.

Dear Sachin, it's time you call it quits. You have served us well for 22 years. BUT the time has come for you to move on. Play in the IPL and make some more money if that's your incentive. Let the go off the Indian team in all forms. Give life and opportunity to a youngster just like how Kapil Dev gave you the opportunity to play for India. You would be serving Indian cricket even well if you retire after this series. Thank you for everything. But it's time to say good bye.

  • on January 15, 2012, 17:03 GMT

Do what ever you want but he will never make that long waited 100th 100.... he knows that the day he reaches that milestone H'll be out of the team......... if you just keep giving him chances h'll just keep u waiting.......... HOPE ur able understand that....

  • Hosoor on January 15, 2012, 16:59 GMT

This is really an unfortunate decision. Its right time to retire Mr. Master Blaster. We have seen enough of you, you have proved (as you did in this test series) how good you are. Please get your dreamed century and please please please retire immediately. There are young players waiting in the sidelines for years. If you old people do not retire, how will they get the chance to prove themselves? Dont be so selfish. You can even bring your own son into the team. With all the connections you have at the right levels it is not at all impossible for you to do. That would be the ultimate parody in a country of 1.2 billion population.

  • KricketWicket on January 15, 2012, 16:59 GMT

As an Indian fan, I have some big question for Sachin, VVS and Rahul. 1) What do they hope to achieve now by continuing to play? 2) What benefit are these massive failures for them? They clearly cannot learn from it. 3) Have they asked themselves the following questions - Why am I playing? Does a defeat for the team pain as much as personal failures do? Do I still have the fire in my belly to win for the team or am I playing for my legacy?

As far as this decision to play Sachin in the ODIs is concerned, it is one big step back for the team. A youngster could have been bread in instead. Even if that youngster failed, it would be better for the team in the long run because - a) either he gets valuable experience or b) we have tried one more person and we can move to the next. Whilst Sachin playing gets us nowhere. I as a fan don't care about these ODIs as much as the longterm future of my team. SRT please pull-off and let a youngster in.

OMG when he will complete his 100th india is paying heavily for much awaited and over hyped ton.....

  • on January 15, 2012, 16:48 GMT

To all those who crib about SRT playing for himself, scoring runs is what is expected from a batsman, & that is what he's been relentlessly doing for the last 20 years! So where's the problem?? All of those 33,000 international runs have been scored by Sachin while representing Team India. But we still end up losing matches because many others in the team play like pussies! Sachin gives you runs on the scoreboard, but if others fail to capitalize on it then what is he supposed to do? The legend almost always plays his part to perfection! I'm sure Tendulkar knows when to take a call on his retirement better than anybody else. He must carry on playing as long as he scores well & stays physically fit & more importantly, as long as he enjoys playing. Remember runs wise, he is still your best bet! Respect!

Good news: Praveen Kumar is fit again. Selection of Pathan, Rahul Sharma and Raina. I think most people wanted Pathan to be selected when PK was injured but Vinay Kumar got selected instead (which as subsequent events have proved wasn't the ideal selection). I think spinners who can do well in Australia are those whose main weapons are accuracy, PATIENCE and variations (however subtle), people like Kumble. Since Rahul Sharma is compared to Kumble in style I am hopeful he MAY be successful there. Too early to say but worth trying. Good challenge for Raina to prove that he has learnt from his England trip and can handle "juicy" pitches.

Questionable: Vinay Kumar seems to be flavour of the season. Not sure he deserves a slot. Tiwary has talent but this is a big challenge for him. I'm on the fence about his selection.

Wrong: Why is Parthiv Patel being persisted with? His batting maybe OK but his keeping is fairly substandard. Surely we have another better keeper who can bat a bit.

  • TendulkarDgr8 on January 15, 2012, 16:28 GMT

Not sure why this ODI series suddenly seems "important" to Sachin Tendulkar. Whatever happened to his "resting" (rusting??) policy. Oh yeah, with every Test ending in 2 days, he would have had enough family time. If ever there is a bad time for Sachin to "make himself available", it is this. It smacks of selfishness and putting self before country.

What's the point in getting a century in a rain marred no contest against a weak Lanka side and getting clobbered by Aussie bowlers who were not even conceived when he started out in international cricket?

On the Australian pitches, "hit or out" type of stroke players do not work. There should be at least 2 players who can spend time on the pitch and prevent the fall of wickets from one side (similar to the role played by Dravid). Now, Gambhir, Rohit (if selected in playing XI) must try to settle and play. At least one of the opener and 1-down batsman should settle and play till the end of 30 overs at least). Otherwise, the team selection is OK. What are the lessons we have learnt, from the test series experience?

  • Capt.Hilts on January 15, 2012, 15:00 GMT

Tendulkar returning to Indian ODI team seems pointless. He is not going to be there defending WC in 2015. If he has any plans of doing that, he should atleast make them public, like Kallis did to put an end to speculations. So what purpose is served with him in ODI team, that too when "He makes himself available/unavailable for ODIs at will". It can be understandable for Tests, he can be around for 1 year, help in transition phase etc. Indian ODI side as of now is good without Tendulkar, and with him not playing would give 10+ matches of valuable experience to some youngster. This seems pretty illogical. Unless Tendulkar is planning to retire from ODIs or may be even Tests after this ODI series.

This is nothing but a veiled attempt by BCCI to give Sachin an opportunity to get his 100th 100 and get out of the way after the series. Given the little master's contributions over the years, he deserves at least this much. I would have liked for him to retire from ODIs after the WC win, but he didn't. I'd rather see him play Test cricket for another year or two.

  • LoftedShot on January 15, 2012, 14:51 GMT

Irfan Pathan and Pravin Kumar would be cannon-fodder for Aussies in Australia! Ashish Nehra with his genuine abilities and nippiness would always have been a better bet. But then, logic and commonsense have never been the forte of BCCI selectors. ALl the best team BCCI!

I guess the team selected has the potential to beat sri lanka in one or two of the matches. Competing against Australia is completely out of question. Sehwag, Gambhir, Sachin will fail big time. I have just lost all the hopes of playing well on australian soil. We haven't done anything special in T20's after that inaugural world cup triumph in 2007 and i guess India will be hammered in both the T20 matches with the Indian batsmen unable to play even 20 overs in each of the matches. Sachin will play one or two "good" innings, especially against the Sri Lankan side but again he won't be getting that 100th 100. Sehwag will throw his bat at every ball and his presence at the crease will be very less. The future of Indian cricket seems very bleak at the moment. Now, I realise that the world cup triumph was just a fluke..... Somebody save our "Men In Blue".

It's not that, there are no better players around. It's just that, the selectors from their respective zones turn a blind eye towards them and their performance. But, BCCI will only look in to aspects that would fill their coffers. The battle between teams in each zone must be on level playing field. For example, performance in east zone can not be given same weightage as that of west zone. Deserving players must be given exposure at inter zonal competitions and practice matches against visiting teams. There should be 3 different teams under 3 different captains for each format (Tests, ODIs & T20s) of the game. This will give fair chances to all good players and players will not complain of overwork and exhaustion; hence, less injury risks too. Any player however great he may be should be replaced if fails in consecutive 4 or 6 innings not withstanding the idiotic saying, "form is temporary ans class is permanent". But, all this won't sure fall in the deaf ears of men concerned. But i

Well if Sachin Tendulkar can't get his 100th 100 in test then the indian selectors have to put him in the odi squad to try and get it so he can retire....good

  • Rollercoaster_27 on January 15, 2012, 14:44 GMT

VINAY KUMAR, PARTHIV PATEL ???? Sachin again :( I guess I will start following some other sport, enough !

  • Mann123 on January 15, 2012, 14:42 GMT

This tells that selectors don't have it in them to make the tough calls. They could have included Rahane in place of Sachin as next world cup is in Australia and Rahane might be in that team whereas Sachin is unlikely. Rahane would have gained so much from this experience. All it needs is few wins in ODIs in Australia and maybe a victory of PAK in upcoming Asia cup and all the thrashing in tests will be forgotten.

  • siddhant328 on January 15, 2012, 14:42 GMT

My support for Wriddhiman on Parthiv and Varun Aaron on Vinay Kumar (especially in Oz conditions). Rest of the team is fine. I heartily appreciate the decision of dropping Ishant and going for Irfan. Good Shot ...

quest for the 100th 100 continues.....or is it an ordeal

  • theswami on January 15, 2012, 14:38 GMT

PLAYING XI should be Sehwag, Tendulkar, Rohit, Kohli, Raina, Dhoni, Ashwin,Pathan, Praveen, Zaheer, Umesh ....... India should play 5 - 1 - 5. Otherwise we will be exposed without a good 5th/6th bowling option, an essentiality in one day cricket.

  • SSGupta on January 15, 2012, 14:37 GMT

Sachin has not been playing in the ODIs since WC 2011. Rahane has performed decently good against ODIs against England. Sachin hasn't been at his best in Tests and this can affect his ODIs performance as well. Also if selectors are looking for the future tean, then Rahane should have been given chance. Zaheer's selection is another issue as he is also in the senior age group. It will be interesting to see if his fitness allows him to play this long ODI tri - series after 4 match tests series. Good to see Praveen and Irfan back in the squad. But Praveen, Irfan and Vinay - all are same pace bowlers. It would have been better if selectors have given chance to a fast bowler like Varun Aaron and Umesh Yadav, in place of Vinay Kumar, who can just deceive the batsman with his slower deliveries.

  • poddardev on January 15, 2012, 14:37 GMT

Following Replacements must be taken in India's ODI Squad ,

Rahul Sharma --> Harbhajan Singh Umesh Yadav --> Munaf Musa Patel Irfan Khan Pathan --> Ashish Nehra Manoj Kumar Tiwary --> Yusuf Khan Pathan Ranganath Vinay Kumar --> Ishant Sharma

  • skumar8494 on January 15, 2012, 14:34 GMT

This is the best available squad for India at present. If ODI also Indis fail same like test, Selection pannel must blood brand new squard for Asia cup.

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:34 GMT

Why there are only 2 quicks(zak & umesh) in this side? remaining all Spinners.

  • adyy0902 on January 15, 2012, 14:34 GMT

My playing 11 wuld b virupa, gambhir, srt, kohli, rohit/raina, msd, jadeja, ashwin/rahul s./ vinay, irfan/praveen, zak, umesh. Manoj tiwary wil b bogey only cnsiderd when mst of above bat r injurd. Whle parthv wl get only a game or two if msd takes break, or injured.

  • vyseerx2 on January 15, 2012, 14:34 GMT

India's performance in the on going Test series against Australia , while disappointing, is not completely unexpected. Everyone hoped that India will do well, not because that India is so strong, but because Australia is considered as relatively weak, not certainly the force once they were.Unfortunately for India, batting which is considered as their forte, is proved to be the weakest in Australian conditions. So much has been expected from Sehwag ,Dravid and Tendulkar. Only Tendulkar has shown a decent form, disregarding the public expectation of his 100th International hundred. That is not much of a record except for those who are using that either as a reason to celebrate or to pull down Maestro a little bit and then feel good. Sehwag and Dravid must have been disappointed with their show so far. So must be Ashwin and Ishant in bowling. The truth is that India as a Test team is NOT as strong as Team India as a one day unit. Hope that they perform, and bring some cheer to the fans !

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:30 GMT

Im happy with this squad for the most part,i still think that Harbhajan can play a vital role in especially the ODI squad. If the test series has shown us one thing its that Ashwin is overrated .dont understand why Vinay Kumar keeps getting selected .He brings absolutely nothing to the table. An allrounder like Stuart Binny would have been ideal to watch and kearn .Vinay cannot bowl, bat or field .Well at least Irfan is back in !,now whether he will ever get a chance to play is a different issue .Dhoni will more likely pick Vinay then him to play if theres a choice between the two because Dhoni never changes the team either in tests or ODI even if India is up 4-0 or down 4-0 .

  • arvindram on January 15, 2012, 14:29 GMT

Patel as a reserve keeper is disappointing, especially since he is out of form. Is Varun Aaron injured? If not, I would have liked to see him in Vinay Kumar's spot. Ajinkya should be a stand-by in case any of the openers are injured.

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:24 GMT

Why these people selecting Vinay Kumar, Except this the selection is gud, please man dont select Vinay Kumar. even in test series he is use less selection. they could hav selected Irfan Pathan in place of him. I listened dat in test cricket Dravid should be retired, it is not gud because in England he was the only player who made runs.

  • sriram177 on January 15, 2012, 14:24 GMT

why is parthiv in the team .they could have choose karthick or saha (atleast he knows the aussie condition )..or may be naman ohja he is in top ten run getter in ranji 2011-2012...parthiv not fit for opening or middle order slot.he just avg below 20.when will player get chance based on present performance not on past reputation .

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:23 GMT

Why Parthiv Patel is selected in this team? Selectors seem to be in love with him without any reason. Since MSD is captain so I don't see Parthiv playing any match as pure batsman. And if you rest MSD for 1 or 2 matches, Uthappa is a better choice than him. I feel for Rahane, he is unlucky and lost his place without any good reason but you can't pick a 20 men squad. Hopefully, he will get more chances in future.

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:22 GMT

Why was W.Saha taken to Australia ? Was it for a joy ride ?? Difficult to understand thinking of our selectors .....

  • D.S.A on January 15, 2012, 14:21 GMT

He's only been selected so he can get a ton against a strong nation. If India's next series is against a weak team, then he won't play them, in case he gets his next ton against a weak team. He'll only play against strong teams, so his 100th will look more prestigious.

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:17 GMT

Rahane should have included and MuraliVijay could have been given a chance,

  • ThatzMyView on January 15, 2012, 14:17 GMT

Gauti and viru are not the right fit now they needed to be axed, which would keep them on their toes and make them come back stronger..

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:16 GMT

The rest of the squad is fine.. But R Vinay Kumar retains his place..?? Even after such a poor show in the recent test match....! Odd.. Isn't it.. Someone whose quicker should have taken his place .. Like a Nehra or Ashok Dhinda or Varun Aaron(in case he's fit again).. It's important to have a backup sitting on the bench in case a main player gets injured..

  • safiyan on January 15, 2012, 14:16 GMT

  • SachinRao on January 15, 2012, 14:10 GMT

Naman Ojha for Parthiv and Ashok Dinda (ideally Abu Nechim) for Vinay Kumar would have been an ideal choice. Maybe Rahane over Tiwary.

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:09 GMT

dinda should have been in the team in place of vinay kumar................

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:09 GMT

why not yuvi in the squad?

  • on January 15, 2012, 14:08 GMT

    A good ODI squad!!

Not impressed on seeing Umesh being given no rest! Hopefully he'll get some for some matches!

Ideally, it should have been Rayudu/Pujara instead of SRT, to give our youngsters a feel of a testing ODI tour!

Also, it may sound too harsh but maybe maybe MSD has something to re-prove about his captaincy!

Good to see Zak, Irfan and PK back, and hope to see Aaron soon!

Jadeja will consider himself to be very unlucky, esp after his recent performances!!

And Parthiv is getting his last chance!

    P.S.- God save Vinay!! :-D

  • raghavthakur on January 15, 2012, 14:05 GMT

This time it will be the 100th 100 surely. Glad to watch him back at the ODI side.

A good team selected in current situation.

    All the best !

  • on January 15, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Why is an ambler like Vinay Kumar picked consistently while a genuine quick like Varun Aaron is ignored in conditions which will suit him considerably?? The selection of Irfan Pathan is a good one.

  • on January 15, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Vinay Kumar...Short of pace, short in length...Tell me one good reason why he deserves a place in the side ahead of Munaf, Nehra or Sreesanth for that matter...I can't envision him bowling one genuine wicket-taking delivery in the entire tri-series..What a shame, what a shame!

  • on January 15, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Well-Balanced team.Nice to see irfan comin back. But y is vinay stil there?

  • adyy0902 on January 15, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Gud team selection. I must say irfan shuld hve been in test squad too. Varun arun culd hve been pickd instead of vinay, but its ok as vinay has been there for almost a mnth nw nd has playd test too. So it is ok, nd in al probability he wil b a bogey in the team until unles india play 4 seamers like in perth they can do. Zak, umesh, praveen/irfan wl b 3 frst choice fast bowlers. Irfan wl b in consideration at no. 8, only when therel b bating colapse in odi's too like tests. Rahul sharma is a bogey there, instead jadeja shuld hve been taken for a variety of left arm spin/ bat when yuvi is not taken. But what hapend to yuvi, reports where he was fit nd raring to go ? Is he along with bhaji a past for indian team ? Is the big Q. Rahane out is ok, as in top sachin returns.

  • on January 15, 2012, 13:57 GMT

  • Dev9212 on January 15, 2012, 13:56 GMT

What are Parthiv and Vinay Kumar doing in the squad. Guys like Balaji and Pankaj are having a great Ranji season but they wont be picked because of the age factor but then what are Tendulkar and Sehwag doing in the squad sorry I forgot that cricket is a batsmen's game.

  • ABTheSeclector on January 15, 2012, 13:56 GMT
