Bresnan, Moeen hold off Queensland 2nds

Queensland 2nd XI narrowly failed to chase down a target of 422 as their game against the England Performance Programme ended in a draw. Tim Bresnan produced a tight spell in the closing overs but Moeen Ali was the main obstacle for the hosts, claiming five wickets and also being involved in the run out of Joe Burns, who made a century to go with his unbeaten 97 in the first innings.

Bresnan, the England seamer looking to press his case for a recall in the second Test, bowled economically but couldn't add to his 4 for 31 on the second day. Tymal Mills was the only other bowler to take a wicket but he and Chris Jordan conceded 120 from their combined 20 overs.

Captain Varun Chopra declared the EPP innings on 201 for 7, with 45 runs added to their overnight score. Having taken their lead beyond 400 and with more than 80s overs left in the day, the Performance Programme bowlers would have had an eye on victory. But despite Queensland mustering only 156 first time in, they came the closer to winning.

Queensland's openers got the innings off to a solid start before Mills broke the stand at 59. Burns and Alex Kemp then added 137 before being dismissed within five overs of each other, as Moeen's offspin began to gain purchase. Further half-century partnerships for the fourth and fifth wickets followed, Moeen ending both, and when Chris Sabburg - the substitute fielder who contributed to England's downfall in the Brisbane Test - became the seventh man out, 56 runs were still required.

Simon Milenko, with 26 off 24 balls, and Mark Steketee, 36 off 18, thrashed a rapid 48-run partnership to bring Queensland 2nd XI close but Bresnan - who got through 26 overs in the match after recovering from a back stress fracture - and the EPP managed to hold them off.
