A right-hand batsman, James Smith made his one-day and Twenty20 debuts for South Australia in 2006-07 at the age of 18. Smith earned his first state rookie contract for 2007-08 and during the off-season he was also a standby for the Australia Under-19 tour of Malaysia. He didn't feature for South Australia in 2007-08 but went on to make his initial first-class appearances in the 2008-09 Sheffield Shield season. Last summer he played the full campaign, peaking with 116 against Tasmania, and finishing with a healthy 641 runs at 35.61.
